What is Self-Pack Moving?

Self-pack moving is a DIY approach where individuals handle packing their belongings using portable storage containers or rental trucks. This method empowers you to take charge of the packing process, ensuring that your items are packed with the utmost care and attention. Unlike traditional moving services, where professional movers take over the packing, loading, and unloading, self-pack moving places these responsibilities squarely in your hands.

When you choose self-pack moving, you have several options at your disposal. You can utilize moving containers, which provide support by allowing you to fill them at your own pace, or you can rent trucks to facilitate the move. The flexibility of moving containers means you can pack and load your items according to your schedule without the pressure of meeting a moving company’s timeline. Additionally, these containers can serve as temporary storage, offering a convenient solution if your new home isn’t ready for immediate move-in. When choosing self-pack moving, it’s important to compare other moving container companies to find the best option for your needs.

This DIY approach not only gives you control over the packing process but also offers significant benefits in terms of cost savings, organization, and flexibility. Understanding what self-pack moving involves allows you to decide if this method suits your international move.

Benefits of Self-Pack Moving

The benefits of self-pack moving are numerous and compelling. Here are some key advantages:

Cost Savings: Taking charge of the packing process lets you save money.

Careful Handling: You can handle your belongings with care, ensuring they are packed securely.

Organization: Staying organized throughout your move becomes easier when you control the packing process.

Flexibility: The flexibility to pack at your own pace allows you to tailor the process to your specific needs.

Self-pack moving is an attractive option for many individuals due to these benefits.

The following subsections delve deeper into these benefits, showing how self-pack moving can make your move more efficient and enjoyable. You’ll discover why this approach, from cost savings to environmental benefits, is becoming popular among international movers.

Save Money

One of the most significant advantages of packing yourself is the potential to save money. Hiring professional movers can be expensive, with costs quickly adding up for services you may not necessarily need. Opting for self-pack moving helps you avoid extra costs, allowing you to focus on safely getting your belongings to your new home.

With UPakWeShip, you have access to cost-efficient moving containers and cheap moving pods, providing a budget-friendly way to transport your items without the hefty price tag of full-service movers. This allows you to allocate your budget more effectively, ensuring you can cover other essential aspects of your move with the cheapest moving container companies.

Moreover, taking charge of the packing process means you can significantly reduce expenses while still enjoying professional-grade transport options. Cutting out the middleman leads to substantial savings, making your international move more affordable and less stressful.

Complete Control Over How Your Belongings Are Handled

When you pack yourself, you have complete control over how each item is handled. This is particularly important for delicate or valuable possessions, as you can ensure they are packed with the attention they deserve. Unlike relying on a moving company, where your items may pass through many hands, self-pack moving guarantees that your belongings are treated with the care only you can provide.

This personalized approach to packing provides peace of mind throughout the entire moving process. Knowing that you have taken the necessary precautions to protect your items can significantly reduce the stress associated with moving, allowing you to focus on the excitement of your new adventure.

Stay Organized

Packing yourself allows you to stay organized and keep track of your belongings. You can label boxes to suit your needs, categorize your items by room, or pack in a way that makes unpacking easier once you arrive at your new destination. This level of organization is something you might not achieve with professional packing services, and it ensures you stay on top of your belongings from start to finish.

With UPakWeShip’s flexible options for portable storage units, your packed items can be stored in a secure storage facility and transported conveniently, giving you one less thing to worry about during your move. Our storage services are designed to accommodate your specific needs, whether you require short-term or long-term storage solutions. This added layer of organization helps streamline the moving process, making it more efficient and less chaotic. Additionally, UPakWeShip ensures that all storage facilities are highly secure, providing peace of mind that your belongings are safe and protected at all times.

Staying organized also means you can easily access your items when needed, reducing the time spent searching for specific belongings. This efficiency can be particularly beneficial during the stressful period of moving, helping you maintain a sense of control and order.

Flexibility with Packing Timeline

Packing your own items provides the freedom to work at your own pace. Whether you prefer to spread out the packing process over several weeks or complete it in a few days, the choice is yours. This flexibility allows you to manage your time effectively, ensuring that you can balance other responsibilities and commitments during the move.

UPakWeShip’s portable storage container offers the flexibility to accommodate your timeline, allowing you to pack and load your items without feeling like a pack rat. This stress-free approach to packing ensures that you can take the time needed to pack your belongings carefully and thoughtfully.

Tailored to Your Specific Needs

When you pack yourself, you can tailor the packing process to your exact needs. Whether you need to use specialized packaging for fragile items or want to use extra cushioning for personal belongings, you are in control of every detail. This level of customization ensures that your items are packed securely and safely for the journey ahead.

UPakWeShip provides durable moving containers, pallets, and U-crates to securely transport your goods overseas, ensuring your tailored packing efforts are protected during transit. This combination of personalized packing and secure transport makes self-pack moving an excellent choice for those with specific packing requirements.

Efficient Use of Space with Portable Storage Containers

Because you know your belongings best, packing yourself allows you to use space efficiently. You can arrange items in moving containers and cheap moving pods in a way that maximizes space and reduces the likelihood of damage. This not only makes the move smoother but also helps avoid any unnecessary costs that may arise from inefficient packing.

Efficiently using space ensures that your belongings are packed securely, minimizing transit damage risk. This careful packing approach can lead to a more successful and stress-free move.

Environmentally Friendly and Secure Storage Facility

Packing your own items also gives you the chance to choose eco-friendly packing materials and reduce waste. Reusing boxes or choosing biodegradable materials helps minimize the environmental impact of your international move. This conscious approach to packing aligns with the growing trend towards sustainability and environmental responsibility.

UPakWeShip supports eco-conscious moving with our range of storage container rentals and mobile storage units, making sustainability easier for movers. By choosing environmentally friendly options, you can contribute to a greener planet while ensuring your belongings are packed securely.

Choosing the Right Moving Container Company

Choosing the right moving container company can be a daunting task, especially with so many options available. It’s essential to research and compare different companies to find the one that best suits your needs.

Research and Compare Companies

When researching moving container companies, consider factors such as pricing, container sizes, and customer reviews. Look for companies that offer flexible pricing options, a range of container sizes, and excellent customer service. It’s also crucial to check if the company is licensed and insured to ensure your belongings are protected during transit.

Some popular moving container companies to consider include PODS, 1-800-PACK-RAT, and U-Pack. These companies offer a range of services, including local and long-distance moves, storage, and packing supplies. By comparing these options, you can find a container company that aligns with your budget and moving requirements.

Portable Storage Containers

Portable storage containers are a convenient and flexible option for moving and storage. These containers are typically made of steel and are designed to be weatherproof and secure. They can be delivered to your doorstep and picked up on your schedule, making it easy to pack and move at your own pace.

Portable storage containers come in a range of sizes, from small 8-foot containers to large 16-foot containers. This makes it easy to choose a container that fits your specific needs, whether you’re moving to a small studio apartment or a large family home. The flexibility of portable storage containers allows you to manage your move without the pressure of a strict timeline, ensuring a smoother and more relaxed moving experience.

Understanding Moving Container Options

When it comes to moving container options, there are several factors to consider. Container size and type are two of the most important factors, as they will affect the cost and logistics of your move.

Container Sizes and Types

Moving containers come in a range of sizes, from small 8-foot containers to large 16-foot containers. The size of the container you need will depend on the amount of belongings you need to move and the space you have available. Smaller containers are ideal for local moves or smaller households, while larger containers are better suited for long-distance moves or larger homes.

There are also different types of moving containers available, including steel containers and wooden containers. Steel containers are the most common type and are known for their durability and security. They provide robust protection for your belongings during transit. Wooden containers, on the other hand, are a more eco-friendly option and can be a good choice for smaller moves. They offer a sustainable alternative without compromising the safety of your items.

It’s also important to consider the type of move you’re making. Local moves typically require smaller containers, while long-distance moves may require larger containers. Some moving container companies also offer specialized containers for specific types of moves, such as military moves or international moves. By understanding the different container options available, you can make an informed decision that best suits your moving needs.

Ultimately, the right moving container company and container size will depend on your specific needs and budget. By doing your research and comparing different options, you can find the best solution for your move, ensuring a smooth and efficient transition to your new home.

Are you gearing up for a move across borders? You’re likely tackling a flurry of tasks like choosing movers, sorting out visas, and wondering about life in a new land. Skip the guesswork with our essential tips for moving overseas, guiding you through the process with straightforward advice to make your transition as seamless as possible. Start your journey here, poised for a successful leap into your international adventure.

Key Takeaways

Organise and label your belongings with precision for a smoother move and customs process, ensuring items are easily identified.

Understand and adhere to international shipping restrictions to avoid fines or seizure of goods, and make informed choices about shipping methods for cost-effectiveness.

Prepare for a successful overseas transition by setting up international banking, embracing the new culture through language learning, and meticulously planning packing, housing, and legal documentation.

1. Organize Your Belongings

Precision is your best ally when preparing for an overseas move. A detailed and accurate packing list not only keeps you organised but also eases the customs process, ensuring your belongings reach your new home without a hitch.

Label your items clearly to ease the customs process and make unpacking easier at your new home. This is a crucial step in your moving process. A well-labeled box or item can save you a significant amount of time and effort when you arrive at your new destination and having something like a change of address checklist can be a bonus. Imagine trying to find your essential items in a sea of boxes, all looking the same. It could be a nightmare!

By labelling your items clearly and accurately, you not only make the unpacking process easier but also help the customs officials do their job more efficiently. Remember, it’s not just about writing the general contents of the box but also about mentioning any fragile items inside. This way, anyone handling your belongings will know to take extra care with that particular box.

2. Navigating International Shipping Restrictions

Moving overseas is a lot like setting sail on a voyage. You wouldn’t want to get refused entry at the port because of prohibited items in your cargo, would you? Understanding international shipping restrictions is crucial to ensure your belongings make it to your new home without any hiccups. From avoiding pet food to declaring alcohol, we’ll steer through these restrictions together.

But it’s not just about what you can’t ship. It’s also about how you ship it. Ensuring your items are labelled correctly and that your packing list is comprehensive can help you avoid fines, delays, or even seizures by authorities. Now, equipped with essential knowledge, we commence our journey for a smooth transition.

3. Choose the Right Shipping Method

When it comes to moving overseas, choosing the right shipping method can make all the difference. Whether it’s sea freight or air freight, understanding your options can help you make a more informed decision about moving costs. But remember, the most cost-effective option isn’t always the cheapest upfront. It’s about getting the best value for your money.

Sea freight, favoured for its cost savings on large shipments, suits those with flexible timelines. Air freight, though costlier, is the go-to for urgent or smaller shipments.

Understanding container options like FCL or LCL is key for sea freight, as is timing—peak seasons can impact costs and availability.

Air freight, while pricier, offers the advantage of speed and can be a good option for time-sensitive moves. It is also considered more secure and offers more frequent departures to a wider range of destinations. When evaluating air freight, consider the weight and volume of your shipments, as air carriers charge based on weight or dimensional weight.

Ultimately, the right shipping method for your overseas move depends on a balance of factors including cost, timing, volume, and your circumstances. By carefully weighing these elements, you can choose the method that best aligns with your needs and ensures a smooth transition to your new home abroad.

4. Set Up An International Bank Account

A new country means a new currency and new banking rules. Setting up an international bank account and informing your current local bank beforehand about your move can help you avoid unexpected fees and keep your finances in order. But remember, financial preparation doesn’t end at the bank. It extends to creating a budget, understanding living costs, and planning for unexpected expenses.

When moving to a new country, currency exchange rates might affect your budget. Familiarize yourself with the country’s banking rules to avoid complications. Inform your local bank about your move to prevent account issues and understand potential overseas fees. Prepare a comprehensive budget, including usual expenses, additional costs like international phone plans, and a reserve for unexpected expenses.

5. Learn the Local Language

Moving to a new country means immersing yourself in a new culture, and language plays a significant role in that. Learning the local language can help you feel more at home in your new city or country, especially if you have moved abroad alone. It can also open doors to new friendships and make everyday life a lot easier.

Not only does it allow you to communicate with locals, but it also gives you a deeper understanding of the culture and customs of your new home. You’ll be able to read local newspapers, follow local news broadcasts, and participate more fully in community events. You’ll also be able to navigate public transportation, read restaurant menus, and ask for directions with ease.

Moreover, learning the local language can also give you a competitive edge in the job market. It shows potential employers that you’re committed to integrating into the local culture and that you have the drive and determination to take on new challenges.

6. Securing International Insurance

Health is wealth, and when moving overseas, securing international health insurance is a crucial step. Whether it’s for a routine check-up or an unforeseen medical emergency, having a health insurance policy, especially an international one, can provide you with peace of mind in your new home country.

This is because healthcare systems vary greatly from country to country. Some countries have public healthcare systems, while others rely heavily on private healthcare. The cost of medical procedures, prescription medicine, and even routine doctor visits can be significantly different from what you’re used to in your home country.

Remember to thoroughly research and compare different insurance plans before making a decision. Factors to consider include the coverage provided, the cost of premiums, the deductible amount, and whether the plan includes evacuation coverage, which would cover the cost of returning to your home country for medical treatment if necessary.

7. Finding Suitable Housing and Making Connections

Finding a new home in a foreign country can be a daunting task, but with local expertise, you can navigate the housing market like a pro. Whether you’re consulting with international relocation experts or realtors, local knowledge can be invaluable in finding the perfect home.

It’s essential to remember that housing norms and standards can vary greatly from country to country. What’s considered a standard amenity in one country may be a luxury in another, and vice versa. Therefore, understanding the local housing market and what to expect can save you from unpleasant surprises down the line.

When looking for a new home abroad, consider its proximity to amenities like public transportation, schools, and healthcare facilities. Explore the neighbourhood to see if it fits your lifestyle. Before settling, consider staying temporarily in different areas of the city to make an informed decision. Remember, finding the perfect home is about ensuring it fits within your new life in your new country.

8. Build a Support Network: Connecting with Other Expats

You’re not alone in this journey. Building a network of fellow expats can provide you with support, friendship, and valuable insights into your new life abroad. Here are some ways to connect with like-minded individuals:

Attend local events

Join expat forums

Participate in expat groups on social media

Take part in language exchange programs

Volunteer in your community

These activities will help you meet new people, including family members, and create a support system in your new home.

9. Legalities and Documentation: Keeping Records in Order

Moving overseas involves navigating a maze of paperwork and legalities. From passports and visas to local laws and customs regulations to international accounts, keeping your important documents in order is vital. Don’t fret – armed with the right knowledge, you can master these legalities and make your international move a breeze.

For a smooth overseas move, ensure your passport is valid for six months post-departure and research visa requirements in advance. Understand local laws to avoid legal troubles. Inform your bank of your move to prevent fees and consider an international bank account for easier finance management. Although the paperwork may seem overwhelming, a methodical and prepared approach will simplify your transition and keep your move on track.

10. Budgeting for Your Move: Understanding Living Costs and Other Expenses

A successful move overseas is all about careful planning and budgeting. Understanding the cost of living in your new country, shipping expenses, and other financial factors is crucial. By setting a realistic budget for your first move abroad, you can avoid unwanted surprises and ensure a smooth transition to your new home.

To begin with, research the cost of living in your new country. This should include the cost of housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, healthcare, and other daily expenses. Consider using online cost-of-living calculators or consulting expat forums for more accurate information.

Next, account for move-related expenses like shipping costs, visa fees, insurance, and flights. Don’t forget the temporary accommodation and storage costs. Include initial setup costs in your new home such as furniture, appliance purchases, and utility deposits.

Lastly, maintain a contingency fund for unexpected expenses or income gaps during job hunting.

Remember, the key to a successful overseas move is being financially prepared. By understanding and planning for these expenses, you can focus on the exciting adventure ahead without financial stress clouding your journey.

Final Preparations: The Month Before Departure

The final month before your move overseas can be a whirlwind of emotions and tasks. From turning off utilities to selling or renting your house, there are many boxes to tick off your moving abroad checklist. But don’t worry, with careful planning and a systematic approach, you can tackle this busy time with ease. You’ll be finalizing travel arrangements, confirming international shipping dates, and perhaps squeezing in last-minute language lessons or get-togethers with friends and family.

It’s also the perfect time to double-check that you have all the necessary documents organized—passports, visas, medical records, and international driving permits. While it might feel overwhelming, remember that each checked box brings you closer to the new adventures that await in your future home.

While shipping your goods might seem a fairly straightforward task, there’s much more to it than meets the eye. With various shipping types, there’s a whole range of international shipping terms to go with them – all to ensure your goods are in the right place at the right time throughout their journey. International shipping is a complicated industry with its terminology and language. But the more shipping terms and abbreviations you understand, the better prepared you’ll be. This guide will give you a comprehensive international shipping glossary to explain the terms and abbreviations that are most commonly used in the industry so you can transport your freight efficiently and affordably.

What are international shipping terms?

Depending on your shipment size, what it contains, where it’s going, how it’s travelling, and who’s paying for it, you can expect to see a wide range of terms and abbreviations covering it. The volume of terms used in the industry can be overwhelming, especially to the customer. But the purpose of international shipping terms means that everyone involved in the shipping process – not just shipping containers – in different countries can recognise what’s what.

These international shipping terms have been collated by the International Chamber of Commerce into a set of internationally recognised guidelines called Incoterms Rules. First published in 2010 and revised and updated in 2020, the guidelines give clarity over meanings, expectations, and responsibilities between buyers and sellers in the shipping and other transport industry around the world.

The 11 Incoterms Rules

The Incoterms Rules are a set of 11 terms and their abbreviations that are relevant for sea shipping and other modes of shipping transport that are split into two categories, as follows:

Rules for sea and inland waterway shipping

FAS – Free Alongside Ship

Free Alongside Ship (FAS) means the seller has delivered the freight goods when they’re cleared for export, placed next to the ship, and ready for loading in the named port of shipment. This is when the risk of loss or damage to the goods passes from seller to buyer. The buyer is now also responsible for any costs after that.

FOB – Free On Board

Like FAS (above), Free on Board (FOB), also known as ‘Freight on Board,’ means the seller has delivered the freight goods when they’re cleared for export and loaded onto the ship in the named port of shipment. Again, this is when the risk of loss or damage to the goods passes from the seller to the buyer. The buyer is now also responsible for any costs after that.

CFR – Cost And Freight

Cost and Freight (CFR) means the seller has arranged and paid the freight goods to be delivered, cleared for export, and loaded in the named port of shipment. The risk of loss or damage to the goods passes from the seller to the buyer only when the goods are on board the vessel. The seller isn’t responsible for insurance of the goods on board.

CIF – Cost, Insurance, And Freight

One step further than CFR (above), Cost, Insurance, and Freight (CIF) means the seller takes responsibility for the shipping costs, insurance, and transportation of the goods to the named port of shipment. CIF includes the seller being in charge of all insurance to ensure complete protection for the goods rather than the buyer.

Rules applying to all modes of transport

EXW – Ex Works

Shipping ex-works (EXW) puts the lowest level of responsibility on the seller and is a frequent rule between sellers and buyers. EXW means the buyer is responsible for insurance, export fees, shipping, and import fees, and arranging for the transport of the goods. Alternatively, the buyer can arrange for a third party to collect, transfer, and ship the goods to the buyer’s address.

FCA – Free Carrier (named place)

A Free Carrier agreement (FCA) means the seller will arrange to pay and deliver the goods to an assigned shipping company at the point of dispatch chosen by the buyer. The seller’s part of the contract is then complete. The buyer is responsible for all subsequent import and export shipping fees, goods protection, and transportation.

DAP – Delivered At Place

Delivered At Place (DAP) means the seller is responsible for and accepts all charges and costs for delivering goods to a ‘place’ specified by the buyer. This is typically a terminal port (DAT) or other final destination address. With DAP, the buyer is solely responsible for paying any unloading fees, customs clearance, or duty on the goods.

DPU – Delivered At Place Unloaded

With Delivered At Place Unloaded (DPU), it’s the seller’s responsibility to deliver the goods to a named destination point already agreed on (quay, yard, warehouse etc.), plus all transportation costs. The buyer then takes over responsibility once the goods are received and unloaded at the agreed point and is responsible for all customs charges and subsequent transportation costs to the final destination. In previous Incoterms rules, this was known as DAT – Delivered At Terminal.

DDP – Delivered Duty Paid

Delivery Duty Paid (DDP) terms mean it’s the seller’s responsibility to deliver the goods to the buyer at a pre-agreed, named place of delivery, usually a port terminal or another destination. The critical difference between DDP and DAT (above) is that the seller – not the buyer – is responsible for all import and export customs charges and subsequent transportation costs to the final destination.

CPT – Carriage Paid To

For Carriage Paid To (CPT) terms, it’s the seller who arranges delivery and is responsible for any export documents and paying for transportation of the goods to a pre-agreed, named destination. Once the goods arrive, the risk transfers to the buyer, who is responsible for import documents and insurance.

CIP – Carriage And Insurance Paid To

While similar to CPT (above), in that the seller arranges delivery and is responsible for any export documents and paying for transportation of the goods to a pre-agreed, named destination, the main difference with CIP is the seller – not the buyer – is also responsible for all insurance costs to the final destination during transportation.

What Incoterms rules don’t cover

The Incoterms Rules, updated every 10 years, are used in contracts worldwide and should be considered before any delivery starts its journey between buyer and seller. They’re accepted and understood by global governments and authorities and save time and reduce misunderstandings and errors at all points along the chain. However, they don’t cover everything. Here are a few things Incoterms rules don’t cover. They don’t cover the following:

• the conditions of the sale of goods
• what goods are being sold or the price of sale
• the timeframe or method of payment between buyer and seller
• any breach of contract, force majeure events, or property rights
• any documentation needed for customs clearance
• delays or disputes
Shipping container terms
While the above terms are crucial ones to remember according to the Incoterms rules, they’re not the only ones that are worth remembering. Here are some other key terms used for a 20 or 40-ft shipping container that may be useful.

LCL – Less Than Container Load

Less Than Container Loads (LCL) are full shipping containers that contain goods of multiple customers rather than just one customer. Also known as a ‘part container load’ or a ‘groupage load’. Despite the name, LCL does not refer to a half-empty or less than a full container.

FCL – Full Container Load

A Full Container Load (FCL) is a single shipping container that’s loaded with goods for the same customer. FCL will generally be delivered more quickly than LCL, and the customs process will also be quicker as the goods are from a single supplier rather than many.

Other shipping terms

International Carnet

An international Carnet is a customs document that allows you to import goods duty-free and tax-free if you re-export them within 12 months. This document is also known as an ATA Carnet, a merchandise passport, or a goods passport. For example, a carnet could be in use to import showcases for a trade show or to transfer hardware and equipment for an international tour by a band or theatre company.

In Bond Shipment

A shipment in bond is stored, handled, or transferred before it encounters customs. The importer buys an indemnity bond, which guarantees the government gets its duties and taxes. If you’re shipping a container from Europe to a US port, you may send it by rail, in bond, to another port without payment of duty.

Another example could be that you’re shipping a container from Portugal to Ukraine (which is not part of the EU’s borderless Schengen Zone). With many borders to pass through, the shipment would be transported by truck, in bond, to the Ukraine border through the EU countries and cleared by Ukrainian Customs.

Transhipment

Transhipment is off-loading a shipping container from one cargo ship and loading it onto another to complete a journey. Typically, this entails transferring from a big transoceanic vessel to a similar or smaller vessel or vice versa. Sometimes, a container may pass through more than one transhipment port before arriving at its final destination.

Bonded Warehouse

A customs-bonded warehouse is a restricted or secured storage area where you can store products without any duty payments for up to 5 years. A bonded warehouse might be used to store a container load of high-value goods, but you might only need a quarter of it now, the rest in three months. Instead of paying duty on the entire cargo, you pay duty only on the items you remove. Your products will need to be transported from the port to the bonded warehouse.

Demurrage and Storage Charges

Demurrage and storage charges are similar but do have specific differences. A shipping line or terminal company will charge demurrage when you keep your loaded container on their property for too long. You have 5-7 business days (or two days for cold storage) to retrieve your container before demurrage applies. If your container is stationary at the port or terminal, you’ll incur demurrage fees if any documentation is incorrect or errors prevent your container from sailing. You’ll also have to pay to store the container at the port or terminal while the issue is resolved.

Storage charges refer to the payment charged by the port or terminal to store your container beyond any free demurrage days. With many ports having limited storage space, the charges are intended to incentivise customers to move their shipments out of any storage facility as soon as possible to avoid excess fees.

I like the idea of packing myself, but can I get help carrying the boxes and loading?

Absolutely! There is a company in the USA called Movinghelp.com that is a great resource to find local help. If not call a local independent mover to quote you on providing a loading crew.

What the cheapest way to move overseas?

Obviously the less you send the less you spend. If you have nothing fragile then the UPakWeShip Pallet service is a very economic way to ship but its not as safe and secure as UPakWeShip’s U Crate service. Always go for a door-to-door option, thinking you are going to save money by collecting your things at the port is often a false economy. You will have to pay a bunch of extra fees before you are allowed to collect it and its probably going to be in a yard in a shady part of town you wish you were not in, let alone your belongings!

Do I need insurance?

Would you not insure your car or house contents? The chances are slim right, but you still insure them just in case. It’s the same with shipping insurance. 99% of the time everything is perfect but just in case something happens you will be pleased you got your money back on the shipping cost as well as being able to buy some new things to compensate for your losses.

Shall I ship everything including all my furniture or just the personal stuff?

If you company is going to pay for everything you might as well ship everything but if you are on a lump sum relocation meaning you have a budget then may be consider just shipping your essential items like clothes, pictures, hobby stuff like your guitar, golf clubs, fishing poles, books, gaming chair etc and leave the rest behind. With the money saved, buy a new bed and sofa at your destination, and treat yourself to an upgraded flight!

Which companies should I get quotes from?

Using google, search for international moving companies that specialize in the are you are shipping to. For example, there is no point asking a company that specializes in South America if you are moving to London. Also, if you are paying your self and only have a few hundred cubic feet or 2500lbs for example there probably isn’t the need to use an expensive corporate mover however great their red carpet VIP service is!

Check out Facebook recommendation groups like Americans moving to Portugal or Brits in LA, or NY or moving to Costa Rica group for example. Many people will share their experiences and recommendations as well as other helpful advice.

Google reviews are also important but don’t be put off if a company has just a few bad ones. Sometimes they are written by competitors and sometimes you just can’t please everybody however hard you might try.

Ask other expats who you meet at your destination who they used for shipping their personal effects and household goods. May be others at the same company you will be working for or same school or may be a local expat group or realtor.

What should I be looking for in a quote?

Check to see everything that can be is included. Some companies might miss out port charges or terminal or handling fees that you would have to pay at the destination. Your best bet is to prepay everything door to door in your quote. If its too good to be true, don’t book it! There are still some unscrupulous companies out there who will take your money and run! Bottom line you are looking for a decent door to door all-inclusive lump sum price.

Questions to ask the mover.

Once you have narrowed it down to a few movers, ask them some questions. How long have you been in business? Do you have a license and what’s the number? Do you have references? What’s the transit time? Who do you use overseas at the destination you are moving to? Do you have your own warehouse? How many employees do you have? I’m all for small business support but you don’t want to have all your treasured belongings being taken care of by a one-man band working from their basement, do you? Ask the company about the destination you are going to. If you are moving to Edinburgh but they have no idea where that it and can’t pronounce it, it’s probably not the right fit for you. Do they know about local customs regulations or at least can find out for you?

This is written by UPakWeShip’s International Moving Doctor.

For any household move from anywhere in Europe to any other EU destination, or even further afield, there’s no simpler way to transport your possessions to your new life than by shipping container. While a safe, secure, and trusted method of transportation for all your belongings and personal effects, it’s also a much more economical way to move your items versus faster but costlier air freight.

But, shipping containers can also have a second life and we often see them being reused and repurposed as something completely different. So what would a shipping container cost to buy for a new use? This article will give you all the information you need, from what a shipping container is, what you can use them for, how much they cost, and what factors can affect the cost.

What is a shipping container?

The standard purpose of a shipping container is to ship possessions and other goods overseas and there are around 5 million of them in active use around the world. Each container is largely the same in design with the frame, walls, doors, and structural components all made from steel for strength and durability. The wall and door panels are made from 14 gauge steel sheets with a corrugated style giving the container even greater strength, even though they’re just 0.075in thick.

And, like most other things, shipping containers come in different sizes depending on what you need. The most common sizes range from 10ft to 40ft – UPakWeShip EU specialises in 20ft and 40ft self-load containers for international shipping – alongside smaller U-Crates that can be used for smaller shipments.

But apart from being a spacious method of shipping items across oceans, the uses of a container can be numerous. While many are used as static storage space that never leaves the ground, they can be adapted and repurposed into almost anything, giving them a whole new lease of life, including offices, housing, sheds, and even above-ground swimming pools.

How much does a shipping container cost for moving?

When it comes to costs for a UPakWeShip EU shipping container to relocate to your new EU, US, or AUS destination, our self-pack containers are the most cost-effective way to get your belongings there. But costs can differ depending on what you need. So to help you save money on your international shipping, tell us how much you’re looking to ship and where to and we’ll send your free, no-obligation, personalised quote to get started.

How much does a shipping container cost for another use?

When you’re looking at using a shipping container for any other use, the costs will be different. You should know what you want to use the container for, how big you need it to be, and whether you want a new or used one. But whatever your budget, there’s definitely a size to suit you.

Prices for a whole range of sizes can start at around £2,000 for a used 8’x10’ container up to around £5,500 for a brand new 40ft container depending on where you look. So let’s check some of the factors which can affect the cost.

Size and weight

The size of the container you need will depend on what you plan to use it for and prices will vary accordingly. All containers have a standard width of 8ft and height of 8.5ft, so it’s only the length you need to look at. Two common sizes of shipping containers are 20ft and 40ft models. But you’ll be able to find smaller 10ft-16ft versions as well as larger ones up to the 40ft versions. And think about your container weight and its final location – depending on size, containers can weigh up to 5 tonnes.

Age and condition

One of the biggest impacts on cost will be your container’s age and condition. Bear in mind that all shipping containers were once heavily used as exactly that, so you should expect some dents and dings. Older containers will obviously have more damage, but newer ones can too, so look into their age as well as their damage history and whether any repairs have been made.

Buying, leasing, or renting

You have a choice of buying your shipping container outright, leasing it, or renting it for the long or short term. Prices will differ from supplier to supplier as well as your choice of size, age, and whether it’s new, used, or refurbished – you’ll also need to work out which payment works best for you. Rental is common for shipping containers and prices can start from around £15 per week. But look out for any added extras such as delivery costs to your location and any additional items on offer.

Additional items

Depending on your business and what you’ll be using your container for, there are plenty of additional items you can choose from. While they might add to your overall purchase, lease or rental costs, many of them can be necessary extras. Some additional items can include locking systems, safety features, damp/moisture removers, air vents, and stack shelving.

How much can a container hold?

If you’re using your shipping container for ‘other’ uses, you’ll need to choose the right size to match your needs. And the same goes for containers that will be used for shipping all your belongings to your new location. It can be difficult to calculate how much container space you’ll need to move the belongings from a typical family home. Everybody’s needs are different, but the following should give you a good indication.

20ft container

A standard 20ft container (20’ x 8’ x 8.5’) will give you a total cubic volume of 33 m3 (1,172 f3) which is 146 sq ft (13.86m2) of floor space. This will generally be able to contain the household items from a one or two-bedroom flat or small house.

40ft container

A standard 40ft container (40’ x 8’ x 8.5’) will give you a total cubic volume of 60 m3 (2,120 f3) which is 285 sq ft (26.47m2) of floor space. This will generally be able to contain the household items from a three-bedroom house and garage.

As we said, everybody’s home and needs are different, but it’s good to know exactly which size container you’ll need upfront. Check our volume calculator to see what size is best for you.

The trucker has collected an empty container from the port of Charleston and has just backed up onto our loading dock number 3.

Now I have to load it with U Crates and Pallets that are wanting to go to Europe.

So the office runs a load list report and gives to the warehouse to prep the right shipments near the loading dock ready to load when the container arrives.

The load list is based on the destination obviously, meaning either Europe, The UK, New Zealand or Australia. The shipments that have sat patiently the longest will go first as long as their owners have paid for them to travel.

I am loading a container (one of 6 actually) going to the Dutch port of Rotterdam. Once it arrives there, out local UPakWeShip team will arrange clearing customs and delivering to all the European homes the U Crates and pallets are eager to go to.

I am driving the forklift so your view is what I see from the forklift seat. The first picture here is of the first two U Crate 100’s loaded in the 40 foot long shipping container. You can see how the two fit snugly together side by side for the ride.

The next few pictures show me gradually loading up the 40 foot shipping container with UPakWeShip’s U Crate 100’s They are very popular and make up the majority of the load today. This is because they are the safest way to move and ship your things to Europe from the USA and Canada.

At last as we are nearly near the end of the shipping container we have something different to load. Here is a U Crate 200 known in the trade as a liftvan. Its made of wood and many international movers use these for packing in to. In this case a customer has used a professional international mover to pack and load their items into a “liftvan” and deliver to us for shipping overseas.

The last two to catch this container ride to Europe are a couple of pallets going to Switzerland. Because Switzerland is not part of the European Union it has different customs regulations than most. For this destination we have to clear the shipment through Swiss customs at the border as we enter Switzerland rather than in our bonded warehouse in the Netherlands. Norway has the same procedures as Switzerland when we go there as well. Anyhow here are the last two pallets getting loaded and the container is now full.

A 40 foot shipping container holds 20 U Crate 100,s but in this case we have loaded 16 U Crate 100’s, a U Crate 200 which takes up two pallet positions and two pallets making the 20.

You can see, nothing can move side to side in a rough sea on the ship as they are all loaded nice and tight. They cant move front to back either as its loaded all the way from the front to the back doors. All we have left to do is shut the container doors, fix a security seal lock through the door handle so no one can open it except for customs and do the paperwork for the driver to take it back to Charleston Port for it to be loaded on the ship to Rotterdam.

The transit time across the Atlantic is about 10 days but first the ship carries on up the coast after departing Charleston to unload and load other containers before heading out across the Atlantic so that might take another 7 days or so.

When our system automatically sends you the sailing details of the ship your shipment will be traveling on, its a great idea to get an app for your phone like Marine Traffic so you can track the progress of the ship and see where it is each day.

The three pictures here show me and the forklift, the container with the doors shut ready to ship and a container vessel leaving Charleston Port.

The chances are you don’t move overseas that often so maybe you are not sure how it all works and know the right questions to ask. We on the other hand move people every day so hopefully this helps.

We know we are by no means the only good company in the international moving world, but we also know there are quite a few less than desirable moving and shipping companies that will get your things and then hold it hostage for more money. Hopefully the notes below will help you choose a great company.

1/ In the USA, all companies performing international moves must be licensed by the Federal Maritime Commission and have a FMC license number. To check to see if a company is licensed click here. https://www2.fmc.gov/oti/ We are licensed as EuroUSA Shipping Inc and UPakWeShip. It is important to use a licensed professional in case anything went wrong you can contact the FMC dispute and resolution committee to help and advise you.

2/ Google reviews. No one in a service industry has perfect reviews but check that the company has more than 4 out of 5 stars.

3/ Do they sound like they know where you are going? Do they seem knowledgeable, are they aware of customs procedures and can answer questions?

4/ Can they email you a picture of your shipment when it arrives at the terminal? OK rubbing it in a little here as I am not sure anyone else apart from UPakWeShip sends you a picture, but we think it’s important to show you that we care and put your mind at ease.

5/ Do they have their own office at the destination to take care of you when you and your shipment arrives? Having your own office is a great plus as it maintains service levels and shipping costs and stops other companies or agents charging you more money at the destination for made up extra charges before delivery. If they use an agent and don’t have their own office overseas, Google the name of the agent and check the reviews. Sometimes there can be financial disputes between companies and your shipment is placed on hold until they get it sorted out. This will not happen if you are using the same company both ends!

6/ Do they specialize in the area you are moving to? We specialize in UK, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Others might specialize in Mexico, Canada, Asia, Africa etc. but there is no point in going with a great company that specializes in Asia if you are moving to London!

7/ Do they answer the phone? Is there more than one person working at this company? We are OK with supporting small businesses, but you don’t want your precious belongings sitting in the middle of the Atlantic when the owner operator has an argument with a bus!

8/ How many years have they been in business? It takes time to get established, build credit, become stable. Don’t book with a new company, why take the risk when there are plenty of established businesses. I know we are showing our age, but we started up in 1988!

9/ We know price plays an important part of the decision but if you are not getting a warm and fuzzy feeling about the people with the best price, don’t do it! Your personal things deserve better! Make sure you ask for all inclusive pricing. You don’t want any extra surprises. Customs exams and x rays would always be extra as no one knows what these costs would be if any, but pretty much everything else should be included. Insurance is always an extra and anyone that says insurance is included in your quote means the insurance is worthless.

10/ If you want to pack your things yourself you can, don’t let some moving and packing company talk you into believing that you won’t get through customs at destination if you pack it yourself. If that was the truth we wouldn’t be in business. There is no more risk if you pack it yourself, but the mover makes a lot of money charging you to pack your things.

Did you know that 2022 is the year of global shipping? After pandemic delays, the industry is back on its feet and expected to carry more cargo than ever. This means there has never been a better time to ship overseas.

So how do you start the process? Read on to find our essential guide on shipping a container.

International Shipping Process

The process for shipping a container has seven stages. Five of these are physical movements, while two are sections for checking documentation.

Export Haulage

This is the section where goods move from the origin point to a packing center. All of the items get packed and padded ready for the container, or in a designated crate if you are using our service. They then go by road to a warehouse.

Arranging transport at this point is the responsibility of the shipping companies or the sender. If the shipping company has organized it, you may find it outsourced to a third party. With our company, we will pick the crate up at your door.

Export Customs

Customs declarations must take place before the cargo can leave the country. The process involves declaring all goods included and the purpose of the shipping, be it for business or private use. Only designated officials that hold customs licenses can perform this task.

Several people can appoint an official such as the freight forwarder or an agent under their request. In some instances, it may even be the person doing the shipping itself that hires them.

Handling

This section covers all handling of the goods. It starts when the consignment travels from its mode of transport at the hub and gets loaded onto a shipping container. Internal handling ends when the goods leave the port.

Once received, the cargo has an inspection. From here, a plan is made regarding how to load it onto the container. If it is being shared with other cargo, they will join together.

After this, the crate gets loaded onto the container and sent to a port. All this is the responsibility of the freight forwarder. The shipper or the consignee may pay for this, and this should be discussed in advance.

Ocean Freight

At this point, overseas shipping begins its journey between countries. The freight forwarder will have chosen a shipping line, and the container goes onboard.

This section is covered financially by the shipper or the consignee. However, there will be costs present other than the transport across the ocean. Bunker adjustment fees and currency adjustment will all apply.

Import Customs

When the cargo arrives at the destination, it must be checked for import customs before it can leave. Technically, this process can begin before it even arrives at the destination country. At this point, import taxes may be added.

Handling at the Destination

This involves removing the cargo from the ship and transporting it to a forwarder’s warehouse. Removing the contents from the container ready for collection also falls under this section.

Import Haulage

The goods are then sent by road or rail to the property of the consignee. All fees must be paid before the goods can be handed over. This may include tax, destination charges, or handling.

What Volumes Can You Ship?

There is no limit on the amount you can ship, either by dimensions or weight. UPakWeShip has an easy method that makes it easier to visualize and pack how much you will need.

Our smallest of the creates is the U-Crate 50. This is a 50 cubic foot crate that gives 40 cubic feet of packing space. This can be increased to a U-Crate 100 and 200 model.

We even offer a pallet service. You can pack your pallet up to a height of 72″, which is ideal for a few boxes and items of furniture. There are discounts available for multiple crates and pallets.

What Can’t You Ship?

Several items are prohibited from shipping. These include, but are not limited to, firearms, certain chemicals, taxidermy items, and flammables. You can read the whole list here.

What Documents Do I Need?

One very important document in the process is the Bill of Lading. This has the owner of the shipment recorded on it and must be present to receive goods at the port. When you use our service, we will take care of this for you.

If you’re joining the millions of Americans abroad, congratulations! Moving overseas is an exciting way to explore a new culture and make new memories.

But there’s no doubt about it; moving overseas is stressful. One of the first things you have to decide is how you’re shipping your household goods.

Have you considered pallet shipping?

Discover everything you need to know about international pallet shipping here.

How to Ship a Pallet Overseas

Moving household goods abroad can be a daunting prospect, especially if it’s your first time using a pallet shipping service. That’s why it’s essential to make your international shipping efforts a first-time success.

First, you will need to select the right pallet. It must have enough strength and durability to support your household goods and meet international standards and sizes.

Your pallet design options include:

Wooden pallets

Plastic pallets

Aluminum pallets

Steel pallets

Cardboard and pressboard pallets

When choosing a pallet design, there are some factors you need to consider, including:

Strength

Stiffness

Durability

Functionality

Price

When choosing a pallet, you have to find the right balance between cost and quality. Consider your budget and the value of your household goods. It might be worth investing more to have a higher quality pallet, especially if you’re receiving it back.

Pallet Dimensions

While there are no universal standard pallet dimensions, it’s still important to stay within specific guidelines. For example, in the U.S., the most common dimension is the 48″ x 40″ pallet.

Another way to determine the correct sized pallet is by measuring your boxed household goods against the size of the pallet. Your goods should not exceed the pallet size, nor should they take up less than 70% space.

Once you have chosen your pallet size, it’s time to load it.

Pallet Shipping Restrictions

Before you do, it’s essential to know the pallet restrictions to keep your goods protected and safe from being seized.

Any goods that are shipping overseas are subject to strict guidelines. You must comply with the ISPM 15 regulations. An ISPM 15 compliant pallet means that the material has been sufficiently treated to ensure the material poses no threat to its destination’s ecosystem.

Wooden pallets must be debarked and then heat-treated or fumigated with methyl bromide, an inflammable gas. Your pallet will not require further treatment upon arriving at its destination.

Preparing a Pallet for Shipment

Certain guidelines must be followed when it comes to preparing pallets for shipping. Here are 10 to keep in mind:

Pack your goods with care

Use bubble wrap

Use enough high-quality tape

Stack heavier boxes on the bottom

Distribute the weight evenly

Make sure the pallet is not too high

Use a flat empty cardboard

Use corner bean around the edges of the pallet

Use quality shrinkwrap

Wrap shrinkwrap around the pallet at least three times

Once you have prepared your pallet for shipping, use an international shipping service like UPackWeShip to collect and ship your package overseas on your behalf.

Benefits of Pallet Shipping

The choice to ship with pallets is one you shouldn’t take lightly. However, there are many benefits to pallet shipping.

Here are the top five reasons why pallet shipping is an effective method of transporting your goods:

Easier loading and unloading

Protect goods when double-stacking

Environmentally friendly

No delays

Clear and accurate billing

Pallet shipping is one of the safest, tried-and-true methods for shipping goods securely. By utilizing international pallet shipping services, you will ensure a safe door to door shipment of your household goods.

Pallet Shipping Tips

Moving abroad is stressful enough without the added stress of shipping your household goods. Pallet shipping can be a challenging experience if it’s your first time.

Here are some tips to help you ship your pallet abroad:

Use the Right Packaging Materials

Packaging a pallet isn’t the same as your average parcel. It requires specific packaging materials to ensure the safety of your pallet during transit. Pallet wrap was designed to protect your content from water damage and other dangers.

Bubble wrap can help keep your contents safe, but it typically isn’t enough protection. You might like to use overlapping layers of shrink wrap around your goods to provide extra protection and stability, particularly if your pallet is tall or top-heavy.

Label Effectively

When sending a pallet, make sure you label every handling unit. Label every pallet with your name and address, as well as any other handling requirements such as “do not stack” or “fragile goods”.

Apply a few labels on the sides of each pallet. For example, apply one label to the front and one on the left or right-hand side. That way, no matter how the pallet is stacked, it won’t rub the label off.

Inspect the Pallets Carefully

Before loading your pallet, inspect it closely for broken boards and sharp nails. They can damage your goods and might be refused shipping.

Add a sheet of cardboard between your goods and the pallet for added protection. That way, you give your goods a higher level of security during transit.

Load the Pallet With Care

Once you have wrapped your goods with bubble wrap, you need to take care when loading them onto the pallet. Stack heavier boxes onto the pallet first, and then add the lighter ones.

Avoid stacking your pallet too high. This will make it unstable and become a danger during the transit. It is far easier to buy more pallets than to risk balancing all your goods on a single pallet.
