Moving abroad is both exciting and confusing. As more and more people seek to move abroad, companies have popped up to help you achieve your dreams without the hassle – but it can still be expensive.

One thing you need to consider when moving abroad is how you will ship your furniture without spending a fortune. While it won’t be cheap, there are several ways to save money on shipping furniture to England when you’re ready to make the big move.

Keep reading to learn how you can save money and start living in your new country surrounded by the furniture that makes you feel at home!

How to Save Money Shipping Furniture to England

We’ve compiled the best tips to help you save money on your big move. Let’s take a look at the top five money-saving ideas for international shipping!

1. Choose The Right Company

The reason for this is that shipping companies can get good deals on shipping costs because they ship things so frequently. It’s similar to ordering in bulk.

Additionally, they also have better ways of shipping such as offering containers on boats that you can fill rather than trying to cram your furniture into a box. This prevents damage to your items and saves you money due to the nature of the shipping industry. If you haven’t yet decided where to live in England, check out this list of the best places to live!

2. Pack Everything Yourself

Sometimes you can save money by packing your furniture yourself. You might use fewer materials and less labor. It’s a good idea to look up examples for how to pack furniture so you can properly protect your valuables.

However, if you have very expensive furniture or family heirlooms it may save you money in potential small repairs to have the company pack it themselves. They have more expertise in the type of movement your furniture will experience and can prevent scratches or wearing from furniture rubbing against each other. If you’re interested in having a company pack for you, check out UPakWeShip Plus.

3. Choose Container or Pallet Shipping

While there are companies that will help you ship several individual boxes overseas for cheaper, it’s often difficult to do with bulky items like furniture. You can save even more money by using a pallet or container.

The reason these are often cheaper is that it doesn’t go by weight (as furniture is often quite heavy and traditional shipping normally calculates the cost by weight) but rather size. If it fits, it ships. All you have to do is decide how large your pallet needs to be or how many cubic feet a container needs to be.

4. Choose Boat Shipping Over Air

You’re probably thinking to yourself that something being shipped by boat is going to take forever. And you’re not wrong. Depending on where you are shipping from it could take several weeks.

Despite this, it is often easier and far cheaper than shipping via air. Space on cargo planes is at a premium due to the fact that planes are simply much smaller than boats. If you only have a few pieces of small furniture or boxes then air shipping may get some of your essentials to you faster.

Overall, however, you can expect prices to be anywhere from 5 times the cost and up. Regulations of what can be shipped are also much more strict. If you have something that might be considered hazardous to fly, such as equipment with batteries in it, you may not be able to ship via air.

5. Do a Cost-Benefit Analysis on Your Furniture

If you have decided to go with pallet or container shipping it is a good idea to do an estimate of how much of your furniture will fit before you get bumped to the next size. If just a few pieces are pushing you over it may be time to think about the relative value of your different pieces of furniture.

For instance, there are IKEAs in the UK. You won’t have any problem replacing some of your cheaper furniture once you move. Even furniture that is easily replaceable might be a good idea to donate locally as long as you don’t have an emotional attachment to those items.

Especially when it comes to larger electronic furniture like massage chairs, it can be far better to sell your items and buy new ones once you get to England. Different voltages and plugs can make setting up your old electronics somewhat messy.

Sometimes it can be hard to realize that most likely England will have everything you have at home. But you should absolutely prioritize your family heirlooms and pieces that hold sentimental value for you. There’s no point in buying something new if it won’t hold the same memories.

What Else Should You Know?

Now that you know all about saving money while shipping furniture to England, you’re probably wondering what company to choose from point number 1. Luckily, there is a shipping company that is there to help you with all of your international shipping needs.

UPakWeShip is a company that specializes in pallet and container shipping. They can do it all, from helping you pack to helping you share a larger container with someone else to save money. Get your international shipping rate today to start your international moving journey!

This is a good question and hopefully a decent answer by the International Moving Doctor so I thought I would post it for everyone else to see.

Hello,

I’m moving from Los Angeles to London in mid-July and the U-Crate 100 seems like the perfect option for me.

I do not yet have a permanent residence overseas and am wondering if it’s possible to book the pick-up date without a delivery address? I would be able to provide one after arriving and securing a flat in London.

Surely I can’t be the first person with this dilemma, does UPakWeShip have any standard procedure for such instances or is it up to me to figure out? Any info is appreciated, thank you!

The simple answer is yes you can ship without an address, just let us know when you have found a place so we can update your information. Don’t fret if you haven’t found a place by the time its ready for delivery as we can easily store your U Crate or pallet for about 25 Pounds or Euros per week until you need delivery.

Some other points though that should be mentioned are as follows: Wherever you are moving to in the world, there is normally a rule that stipulates that you need to be in the Country in order for local customs to clear your shipment into that country tax and duty free.

In order to obtain tax free entry of your household goods into the UK, you will need to complete a Transfer of Residence form online. ( More details on our web site) For this form you need an address but you can complete it with your work, hotel, family member or friend that you might be staying with temporarily before you find your own home.

Hope this helps and let me know if you have other questions.

At UPakWeShip, we pride ourselves in being experts in the forms and documents needed to safely and securely ship your belongings overseas. We know it can be confusing and overwhelming, with so much information online – which is why when you’re moving to the UK, we’ll be letting you know about the ToR form.

The ToR, or Transfer of Residence form, was introduced to the UK to allow you to ship your items into the country duty-free and tax-free. It should be one of the number one things on your to-do list, as we need your ToR number in order to ship your belongings.

However, to obtain duty and tax-free entry of your used household items there is a criteria:

You must be shipping your own belongings within 12 months of your personal arrival to the UK.

You must have lived outside of the UK for the past 12 months.

You must declare all of your items that you are going to ship have been used for more than 6 months and that you are not going to sell them within the next 12 months.

You can find the full terms and conditions of the ToR on the UK Government’s website, however, before you start the process it’s important to have prepared:

Your packing list

A photocopy of your passport page

Proof of your UK address

Proof of your current address

Details of any vehicle you’re bringing with you (yes, we ship vehicles too!)

We know it sounds daunting, and nobody likes paperwork, but don’t worry, when you ship with us, your shipping coordinator will know all of the ins and outs and will talk you through the process…

…Which has just become significantly shorter, thanks to the UK finally getting with the times!

From the 1st of January, the once email-in ToR system has become digitised – you simply submit your ToR via this online application, smoothing about the whole process tenfold!

If you know you’re ineligible for the ToR tax and duty-free relief, for example, all your items are less than 6 months old or you’re sending items to somebody else, then you will need to provide a packing list with used values and a letter explaining the circumstances why you are shipping these items as well as completing the ToR form. UK Customs may then charge duties and taxes if you do not qualify for duty-free entry.

Are you looking at moving to the UK? UPakWeShip has instant, all-inclusive prices for your move available on our website.

For Americans and Brits alike, life over the pond is an intriguing, same-but-different adventure many are drawn to. Much like looking into one of those morphing mirrors at a fairground, you recognize aspects of yourself, but also it’s completely different.

If you’re American, you may think you know the UK. Whether it’s from trips you’ve taken or from watching Harry Potter.

But the truth is, there’s a lot of British-isms you’ll need to get to grips with before stepping foot on the Queen’s country.

Please prepare yourself.

1. The BBC

There are approximately 32390123910 BBC channels. And all British people know roughly what they all do, but we don’t know how we know.

BBC 1? That’s where the good stuff happens. I’m convinced nobody really knows what BBC 2 is for, it’s basically BBC 1s overlap. BBC 3? Arguably the best BBC channel, but it was moved online. BBC 4? It’s a weird place, but we usually venture onto it at, exclusively, 2am.

Don’t get us started on CBBC and CBeebies. OR the countless news channels.

2. Brown Sauce

Ah! Brown Sauce. Yes, you may think, I am familiar with sauce that is brown! It is called BBQ Sauce!

But no. You are wrong.

Brown Sauce is the same color as BBQ Sauce but it is not actually BBQ Sauce, it is just Brown Sauce. Brown in color, brown in name. The branded version is HP Sauce but if you look anywhere else, Brown Sauce is what you will find. Nobody knows what is in Brown Sauce, it is used exclusively at breakfast. But it is delicious.

3. Our hash browns are different

What I should really say, is that your hash browns are different. Ours come in the worldwide (minus America) hash brown style. A rounded-triangle-thing which is essentially a dense, compact parcel for what Americans serve wild and free.

The only downside is, hash brown bowls à la Waffle House simply can’t exist.

4. Going ‘to the toilet’

In an unusually confronting way for British people, we openly say we’re going to the toilet, rather than calling it the bathroom. The bathroom is not the toilet. Because the toilet usually contains no bath or shower. It is simply a toilet stall and a sink. If a British person is using the bathroom, they are washing their body.

5. Drinking habits

The UK’s ability to drink is no secret. With a drinking age of 18 and most teenagers drinking from around 15, we’ve had years to build up 1) tolerance and 2) a fantastic repertoire of drinking songs to be enjoyed by anyone in the pub.

This includes chanting ‘Down it’ when anyone is in a rush and needs to finish their drink, and starting a count down for those who are going too slowly.

6. The greatest three words in Britain are not ‘I love you’…

…they are ‘Colin the Caterpillar’.

Any and every British citizen will know exactly who – or rather, what – Colin the Caterpillar is.

He isn’t, as you may suspect, a beloved children’s character. He is a cake.

Colin’s are the cake of choice for every Brit from 1 to 100. They are technically only sold at Marks and Spencer, but every British supermarket has its own knock off (Cecil the Caterpillar etc). We love them all. And they will all be called Colin.

If you think this isn’t deadly serious, The Huffington Post actually tried the various versions and ranked them.

7. The three stages of British consumption for a night out

Step 1. Consume alcohol
Step 2. Consume kebab (only after 2am, only whilst drunk)
Step 3. Consume full English (the next morning, kebab forgotten).

8. Nothing is direct, passive-aggression is the only language we understand

Example: In a bar, buying rounds of drinks “Alright guys, whose round is it next?”
Real meaning: I know whose round it is but I’m reminding you because I refuse to ask outright.

10. Marmite really is a passion.

It’s fair to say the UK is currently quaking under its landmark general election last night. But whatever you think of the new Prime Minister, it’s clear that Brexit will be happening.

The topic of Brexit has been a bit of a taboo over the last three years – but it’s real, it’s happening, and for any American moving to the UK, it needs to be considered.

So, let’s get down to the facts. How will Brexit impact you?

The exchange rate

It was previously unclear how the exchange rate would be affected by the newly elected government, however, with the pound soaring at midnight, it’s good news for anyone heading home for Christmas and looking to cash in their pounds for dollars.

However, for those already working in the UK and being paid in USD (supposing the exchange rate sticks around), you may find your earnings won’t go as far over the holiday season.

For those moving to the UK, this will be something to consider, especially if you’re being paid in USD. However, the pound has a long history of instability, and with Brexit on the horizon, there is a chance it will fall again swiftly.

British/American dual citizenship

The impact on Americans with dual citizenship living in the UK will be determined by the type of dual citizenship you have. Those with US Italian or US Spain citizenship (etc) will have to apply to live in the UK the same way EU citizens will be required to apply post-Brexit, under a ‘Settlement Status’.

If you are planning to move to the UK under an EU passport which is non-UK, this will be one of the biggest aggravating factors in your move. In order to ensure your visa is legal, utilize all of the Government resources available to you.

Whilst it’s still uncertain, there are talks of Brexit resulting in stronger links between the UK and US – a citizenship path which until now, has been incredibly hard – if this is the case, the result of Brexit may be an easier visa process, which will work in favour of those looking to move across the pond in the future.

For businesses/employment opportunities

Many European and international businesses which once based themselves solely from the UK are making the move into Europe. Where the UK was once the middle-man for US-EU relations, the break in the market between the UK and EU as a result of Brexit is likely to mean more and more US companies trade directly with the larger EU market, rather than the UK.

If you are an American citizen determined to move to the UK, this may hinder your plans whilst companies try to find their footing in a time of uncertainty. However, there will be plenty more opportunities for Americans looking to make their way to other EU countries, as the movement of businesses will create both domestic and international jobs.

The US/UK Tax Treaty

There have been no talks – and as far as we know, no reason – as to why the US/UK tax treaty would change. It currently affects a very minimal number of expats, however, if that is you, then Brexit is extremely unlikely to change it.

The two main categories of Americans who will be impacted by Brexit, are expats who are in the UK on an EU passport which is not UK, and those who work under companies who may relocate outside of the UK for economic stability. However, if you have secured your visa and are ready to go, the reality is Brexit will not impact you much more than it will the average UK citizen.

If you’re looking at moving to the UK/EU, UPakWeShip has over 30 years of moving experience – and we have offices in both the UK and Europe!
I compared this company with many other companies in the US and chose this one because of the fair price and professional service. It’s not going to be cheap to move internationally but they’re very transparent with the price (shipping + insurance + storage) in the beginning. The customer service via email is very responsive and knowledgeable.

We have had a few inquiries from people asking us if there will be any problems with their shipment transiting from the USA to the UK /EU or visa versa? The simple answer is No. We send all shipments bound for the UK into the UK and all shipments bound for Europe into Europe direct. We have done this now for the last 12 months in preparation so we see no problems or delays caused by Brexit or Customs. We have our own offices in Europe as well as the UK so we have no need to transship from the UK to Europe.

Similarly if you are moving to the USA from either Europe or the UK our offices there will take care of all your moving needs again independently with no transshipping across any border.

If you are moving to Europe and are worried about shipping your pet, there is a third option that I had not considered before.

Option one is obviously, contract an international pet mover to take care of the service but this can easily cost $5,000 which is a little excessive compared with for example shipping a 50lb suitcase with UPakWeShip for $125. The advantages are that everything is taken care of for you, total peace of mind knowing all the paperwork has been done properly and its a door to door service.

Option two is arrange it all yourself by getting all the documents and shots in order and booking him or her on a flight, may be the same flight as you are on when departing the USA for your new European destination. The risk is, did you do everything correct? What if there is a mistake in the paperwork? where do I collect him or her at the airport the other end? What about customs at the destination?

The third interesting option is book a cruise trip on the Queen Mary 2 from New York to Southampton England. The 7 day crossing including meals is about the same price as a flight. Queen Mary 2’s kennel program is available on all Transatlantic Crossings between New York and Southampton, and is managed by a full-time Kennel Master who takes care of responsibilities such as feeding, walking and cleaning the ship’s 24 spacious kennels. The cost depending a little on time of year and size of Duke or Duchess is about $1,000. While the UK is still part of Europe, once cleared through customs in Southampton, your pet is free to travel on to anywhere in the UK or Europe. If you are moving from Europe to the USA you can also travel in reverse with your pet into New York.

All options will require your pet to have up to date shots, a chip and a pet passport.
