If you are not sure what our U Crate 100 service is…… here goes!

We send the U Crate out to you flat packed. You can practice loading things in it in your garage or in your house or apartment so on collection day you know where everything is going to fit.

You need to have everything packed in boxes or wrapped in bubble wrap to keep everything safe.

On your scheduled loading day, load everything up on your driveway or garage. The U Crate comes with a pallet bottom, two sides and a top plus loading straps, tape and a plastic cover.

The driver will collect it with a pallet jack and with the truck tail lift it gets loaded into the truck and transported to our shipping terminal which in this case will be our UPakWeShip facility in Walterboro SC. From there it gets loaded into a shipping container and put on a container ship headed to Rotterdam.

Once the ship arrives roughly 10-14 days later, the container gets unloaded of the ship and we unload the shipping container with all the pallets and U Crates into out customs bonded warehouse where we arrange to have it cleared through customs. After that our UPakWeShip EU office will contact you to arrange delivery in this case from Netherlands to your door in Portugal.

The U Crate 100 will be unloaded the same way with a pallet jack and tail lift truck and placed outside your new residence for you to unload. Everything inside the U Crate is exactly as you loaded it. Its a simple system but it works. You get an all inclusive lump sum price that includes the cost of the U Crate and the door to door shipping.

No hassle, no strangers in your house, no worries, no huge expense. Just UPakWeShip door to door, doing what it knows best!

Ship one or multiple U Crates safely from the USA to Europe via our weekly shipping service from Charleston port to Rotterdam.

Take a look at our all inclusive lump sum international moving rates on our web site for you view without even having to log in and give any personal information away. Its just there for everyone to see!

You wont regret it!

If you are moving or thinking about moving to Portugal you should subscribe to Portugal Living Magazine by clicking here.

As an expat living in Portugal, Bruce is full of information about the trials and tribulations of moving to and living in Portugal and is willing to share some valuable information with those thinking about doing the same.

Lets start off by asking where are you from Bruce and how long have you lived in Portugal?

I’m North American, from the USA. This is my fourth year living in Portugal.

Why Portugal?

We’ve had a vacation bolt for 15 years in Spain — still do — but we prefer Portugal for our permanent residence. Why? It’s got charm, soul, spirit, great people, a favorable cost of living, peace, and lots of lovely little villages.

What does Portugal have that say Spain or France doesn’t have?
Saudade … that sense of longing and yearning. While Spain and France may be more spirited, Portugal’s got more soul (I believe).

What are your top 3 things you love about Portugal?
The people. The places. The peacefulness.

Is there anything you do not love about Portugal?
The bureaucracy. And that it’s so difficult for the Portuguese to earn a decent living here that they tend to leave their homes in favor of the big cities–here and abroad. What are your top 3 things you miss about the USA ?
Family. Friends. Foods.

The Yes or No part

What all Americans need to know….
Amazon available? Yes.
Netflix? Yes.
Electrical Appliances work? Yes.
Apple TV? No.
Voltage? Had to up our potencia in each of our homes here.
Vinmo? Vinmo? If you’re talking about vinho, absolutely! Tinto, por favor. I like this guy, I’m trying to talk about a money transfer service and he changes it to wine lol
Good WI-Fi & Internet? Sim.
Most popular cell phone service? None of them are considered “popular,” but we’ve gone with MEO.
Most Popular Bank? Montepio. For 2€ per month, we get lower bank costs and medical/health insurance superior to what we’re paying for privately.
Most popular Grocery Store? Continente.
Most popular Beer? LOL! There are only two: Sagres and Super Bok.
Starbucks? Dominos? McDonalds? Subway? Não, não, não!!!

What do you know now that you didn’t know before you arrived in Portugal?
Portuguese. The language is quite challenging–maybe even more so for me because I’m fluent in Spanish. Quite the stumbling block!

How did you select your international moving / shipping company?
Internet search, then, process of elimination.

Why did you select them?

I didn’t know about the options available on this side of the pond … so, the company we went with was the most honorable among thieves. Obviously he didn’t find all the recommendations from facebook groups suggesting he goes to UPakWeShip or find the all-inclusive lump sum prices online here.

Any personal advice having now completed the international move?
Be prepared–the Boy Scout motto. And be patient, very patient.

What are the definite things to pack and ship to Portugal in your opinion?
Little things: aspirin, over-the-counter eye drops, red pepper flakes, real vanilla extract, hot and spicy sauce–anything but Piri Piri!

I think many expats might worry about health care abroad, how are you getting on with this?
I was on Medicare back in the USA, so I didn’t have any real problems.
My partner, however, had to rely on the Affordable Care Act Marketplace.
Imagine paying US $1,250 per month for the mediocre “bronze” coverage, when we pay €2,000 per year for comprehensive health care coverage in the private sector that covers us both! Plus, of course, as residents we are part of Portugal’s National Health Care Service (which costs us nothing).

How is your Portuguese, obviously we know everyone must try and make an effort with some basic words but do you fine most people understand English?
At this point, I can carry on conversations, ask and answer questions, deal with doctors and tradespeople, and complain in Portuguese. But, as mentioned above, Spanish will always be a stumbling block for me; I may know the language and understand its grammar, but my pronunciation always gives me away. Portuguese people initially think I’m Spanish … then English (i.e., from the UK). So many people here speak English better than I do Portuguese — English is part of their core curriculum in school, not considered a “foreign” language — and they’re eager to be “helpful” by speaking English with us. But it’s difficult to learn Portuguese without the practice, which I explain to them.

Top Tips for moving to Portugal?
Don’t regret making the move … and don’t look back. While some people believe that everything that doesn’t fit into a suitcase (or two) should be left behind, we don’t agree. Over the course of our 30-year history together, we collected a lot of “stuff” that means a lot to us. Sentimental value, I guess. But I would never want to regret leaving behind those ingredients which made our life together so home-y and comfortable. I totally agree with this Steve, having your personal history with you helps you settle in and makes your home personal

Just for fun….

Do you get home very often? And when you do, what is the first food you want that you can’t get in Portugal?
No. That’s actually a major issue for us. We have no desire whatsoever to return to the USA unless and until the political warfare, the divisions, the massacres, and the hate turn around for the better. This is one of the most difficult aspects of living abroad for me: I have yet to hold my 18-month-old granddaughter. We videochat (my son,
daughter(in-law) and granddaughter every Sunday. Yet, for the reasons I’ve mentioned — and Covid restrictions — we’ve not been together in “real” time (or place). I’ve offered to pay their expenses to come and visit us in Portugal for however long they can manage, but it’s difficult and complicated for them, too, at this point in their
(professional) lives.

As difficult as it is to answer this first part of your question, Mark, the second part is far easier: The first food I’d eat, which we can’t get here in Portugal, is a hot pastrami sandwich with a pickle and coleslaw in New York City!

Pickles…… really? Being English the only pickles I like come in a jar with Branston written on it lol

Moving abroad is an exciting time of life as you await new experiences, adventures, and possibly a new career, too.

However, it also comes with several responsibilities, as well. One of those responsibilities is figuring out the logistics of shipping furniture overseas to your new home.

If you’re getting ready to work with a furniture shipping company to get your personal items sent to a home abroad, this guide is for you. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about shipping furniture to Europe.

Find A Shipping Company

The first step to shipping your furniture to Europe is to find a reliable shipping company. Here are a few tips to help you choose the right team for the job.

Compare Shipping Furniture Costs

Cost is always one of the first things to look at when selecting a shipping company. You want to find a company that’s affordable, but that isn’t reducing its prices by leaving out important safeguards for your belongings.

To make sure you’re getting the best price, call up a few different shipping companies. Ask for quotes for services so that you have a better idea of how much to expect to pay.

Ask About Arrival Times

Another important factor in choosing a shipping company is to see how long it will take for your furniture to arrive. If you’re on a tight timeframe for moving to Europe, you might need a company that can promise faster delivery times than another.

Read Reviews

Customer reviews are one of the easiest ways to get a good read on how a shipping company will perform. Read through reviews to get details on how affordable a company is as well as what quality services they provide.

You can also ask friends and family members for recommendations. Talking with people who have already worked with an international shipping company can give you a better idea of what to expect from your chosen company.

Sort Your Belongings

With your shipping company chosen, it’s time to think about what items you’ll be taking with you and what items you won’t. After all, you probably have duplicates of items or pieces of furniture that you rarely need.

To start sorting your belongings, you’ll need to think about how long you’ll be spending abroad. If you’re planning a permanent move, you’ll need a lot more furniture than you will if you’re just going for a few months.

You’ll also want to think about where you’re moving to. If you’re moving to a remote location, you might need more items than you would in a city where you have convenient access to shops and entertainment.

Take Inventory

Before you dive into packing up your newly sorted furniture, you need to think about what furniture you have and how you’re going to pack it. Doing so will make it far easier for you to ship your items when the big day arrives.

The first step in taking inventory of your belongings is to sort through them. Create a checklist of all the items you have and what part of the home they pertain to.

By organizing your items based on the room they belong in, you’ll have an easier time unloading them at the other end of your journey. Make sure to label each box or group of items, too. That way you have a detailed list of what is going into each box.

You’ll also need to make sure that you note down which items are breakable. Be sure to take note of any boxes that contain fragile items before you load them up into a box.

Choose A Packing Solution

The next step in preparing to ship furniture to Europe is to think about what packing solution you’re going to use. You can either pack your items yourself or you can hire a team of professionals to get the job done.

Working With Professional Packers

Professional packers are great at using the most possible space. That means they could provide you with big cost savings on your transportation without having to leave any furniture behind.

Professional packers will typically use empty drawers or oddly shaped spaces to pack additional items for you. This helps you get the most out of your service and to limit how much shipping volume your furniture takes up.

When you hire professional packers, they will load your belongings onto a pallet. From there, they’ll shrink-wrap the entire pallet to keep everything secured during the move.

Packing Furniture Yourself

Not everyone chooses to use professional packers for a move to Europe. If you want, you can also pack your items up yourself. However, if you choose to do this, your items have a different insurance coverage.

If you’re going to package your items on your own, you’ll need to purchase Styrofoam, bubble wrap, boxes, and packing tape. You’ll also want to enlist friends and family to help you get all your belongings packed up in time for your move.

Get Insurance

One of the most important steps you should take when shipping furniture abroad is to get shipping insurance. Shipping insurance helps you protect your belongings from damages while in transit.

Many shipping companies offer insurance as an optional add-on. By getting your furniture insured with your chosen shipper, you can save some money on the overall cost.

If you prefer to get a private shipping insurance plan, there are plenty of options out there. Make sure to compare the costs and benefits before signing up for one.

Shipping Furniture To Europe Made Easy

With this helpful guide to shipping furniture to Europe, making the move across the pond will become a lot easier. And, you’ll be prepared for all the ins and outs of international shipping!

If you’re ready to get started with furniture shipping services, we’re here for you. Get in touch with us and we’ll get your items delivered to their final destination.

At UPakWeShip, we pride ourselves in being experts in the forms and documents needed to safely and securely ship your belongings overseas. We know it can be confusing and overwhelming, with so much information online – which is why when you’re moving to the UK, we’ll be letting you know about the ToR form.

The ToR, or Transfer of Residence form, was introduced to the UK to allow you to ship your items into the country duty-free and tax-free. It should be one of the number one things on your to-do list, as we need your ToR number in order to ship your belongings.

However, to obtain duty and tax-free entry of your used household items there is a criteria:

You must be shipping your own belongings within 12 months of your personal arrival to the UK.

You must have lived outside of the UK for the past 12 months.

You must declare all of your items that you are going to ship have been used for more than 6 months and that you are not going to sell them within the next 12 months.

You can find the full terms and conditions of the ToR on the UK Government’s website, however, before you start the process it’s important to have prepared:

Your packing list

A photocopy of your passport page

Proof of your UK address

Proof of your current address

Details of any vehicle you’re bringing with you (yes, we ship vehicles too!)

We know it sounds daunting, and nobody likes paperwork, but don’t worry, when you ship with us, your shipping coordinator will know all of the ins and outs and will talk you through the process…

…Which has just become significantly shorter, thanks to the UK finally getting with the times!

From the 1st of January, the once email-in ToR system has become digitised – you simply submit your ToR via this online application, smoothing about the whole process tenfold!

If you know you’re ineligible for the ToR tax and duty-free relief, for example, all your items are less than 6 months old or you’re sending items to somebody else, then you will need to provide a packing list with used values and a letter explaining the circumstances why you are shipping these items as well as completing the ToR form. UK Customs may then charge duties and taxes if you do not qualify for duty-free entry.

Are you looking at moving to the UK? UPakWeShip has instant, all-inclusive prices for your move available on our website.

For most, moving abroad is something which will take a lot of time and consideration. Whilst we may wish we could up and leave, there may be mortgages, children and jobs to consider. Plus, if it were that easy, wouldn’t everyone be hopping on planes to move country?

If you’ve been presented with the opportunity to move, you’ll likely be wondering whether it’s worth it, or if it will be the right decision for you.

With over 30 years of moving experience (and a lot of personal experience from our team too!), we’ve pieced together the pros and cons you should consider before moving abroad:

Pros

There is a unique opportunity to travel when you’ve moved to a new country – whether it’s to explore the country itself, or its neighbors (particularly when moving to Europe). Travel anywhere is an invaluable experience, and getting to discover more about the world is hugely exciting!

The idea of ‘travel’ doesn’t even need to be in the air, you could get a train ride to the next city, or maybe there’s an incredible restaurant you would never have experienced otherwise. The likelihood is, however, once you’ve moved abroad, you’ll be more open and willing to explore other places and make the most of the opportunity.

Moving abroad will likely see personal growth in both yourself and your loved ones. It’s a daunting experience, even more so if you’re moving solo, and it requires a lot of networking and putting yourself out there. Any position in which you’re out of your comfort zone will lead to personal growth, and for a lot of people, there’s nothing more rewarding than the experience of moving abroad.

You’ll meet new people, even if you’re wary initially, it will become natural to say hello to your local coffee shop owner, or see familiar faces in your neighbors. You could meet your new best friend or even the love of your life! If you’re moving abroad to join a loved one, you’ll also become a part of their lives and network, which will include meeting more people and experiencing their culture first-hand.

Moving abroad looks great on a resume, because it shows you have a lot of transferable skills, including initiative and independence. Whether it’s for the country you’re moving to, or for when you eventually come home, having a long-term experience abroad will really make you stand out against other candidates, and can lead to a natural flow in conversation during interviews.

Cons

Naturally, the biggest con is that you’ll miss your friends and family. Even the most seasoned expats get homesick. Whether it’s for their loved ones or a type of food you can’t buy in your new home country *cough* Marmite *cough*. Homesickness is real, but it does get a lot easier, and the chances are you’ll be so caught up in the moving process, that it won’t impact you too much.

Missing home is also related to culture shock, which happens when you aren’t familiar with your surroundings. This plus a lack of support network can be the downfall of many expats, however, it’s important to stay positive and know that everyone feels like this once. For more information on overcoming culture shock, why not check out our guide to dealing with it?

The bureaucracy of moving abroad can be daunting, for instance, it’s notoriously hard to rent in a lot of Europe without a native to be on your side and prove to agencies you won’t be running away. If you’re going somewhere and don’t speak the language, simple tasks like setting up bank accounts and sorting out your driver’s license or tax numbers can become mountains to climb. Always make sure to do your research on your new home. Making friends with locals will also help you to overcome these boundaries, as most people are more than willing to lend a hand to someone struggling to get to grips with it all.

Deciding what to take with you can be a huge challenge, but nobody knows your belongings better than yourself. If you’re looking to move abroad, why not pack your own belongings and have peace of mind that you know exactly what is what and where is where. That way, you won’t be landing with furniture you’re unable to store, and you can de-clutter in the process! UPakWeShip is a self-packing service for international movers. Save money by packing yourself, and we’ll pick up from your doorstep and deliver it to your new front door! Even better, the tax and customs forms are all part of the service – and most importantly, the price!

For Americans and Brits alike, life over the pond is an intriguing, same-but-different adventure many are drawn to. Much like looking into one of those morphing mirrors at a fairground, you recognize aspects of yourself, but also it’s completely different.

If you’re American, you may think you know the UK. Whether it’s from trips you’ve taken or from watching Harry Potter.

But the truth is, there’s a lot of British-isms you’ll need to get to grips with before stepping foot on the Queen’s country.

Please prepare yourself.

1. The BBC

There are approximately 32390123910 BBC channels. And all British people know roughly what they all do, but we don’t know how we know.

BBC 1? That’s where the good stuff happens. I’m convinced nobody really knows what BBC 2 is for, it’s basically BBC 1s overlap. BBC 3? Arguably the best BBC channel, but it was moved online. BBC 4? It’s a weird place, but we usually venture onto it at, exclusively, 2am.

Don’t get us started on CBBC and CBeebies. OR the countless news channels.

2. Brown Sauce

Ah! Brown Sauce. Yes, you may think, I am familiar with sauce that is brown! It is called BBQ Sauce!

But no. You are wrong.

Brown Sauce is the same color as BBQ Sauce but it is not actually BBQ Sauce, it is just Brown Sauce. Brown in color, brown in name. The branded version is HP Sauce but if you look anywhere else, Brown Sauce is what you will find. Nobody knows what is in Brown Sauce, it is used exclusively at breakfast. But it is delicious.

3. Our hash browns are different

What I should really say, is that your hash browns are different. Ours come in the worldwide (minus America) hash brown style. A rounded-triangle-thing which is essentially a dense, compact parcel for what Americans serve wild and free.

The only downside is, hash brown bowls à la Waffle House simply can’t exist.

4. Going ‘to the toilet’

In an unusually confronting way for British people, we openly say we’re going to the toilet, rather than calling it the bathroom. The bathroom is not the toilet. Because the toilet usually contains no bath or shower. It is simply a toilet stall and a sink. If a British person is using the bathroom, they are washing their body.

5. Drinking habits

The UK’s ability to drink is no secret. With a drinking age of 18 and most teenagers drinking from around 15, we’ve had years to build up 1) tolerance and 2) a fantastic repertoire of drinking songs to be enjoyed by anyone in the pub.

This includes chanting ‘Down it’ when anyone is in a rush and needs to finish their drink, and starting a count down for those who are going too slowly.

6. The greatest three words in Britain are not ‘I love you’…

…they are ‘Colin the Caterpillar’.

Any and every British citizen will know exactly who – or rather, what – Colin the Caterpillar is.

He isn’t, as you may suspect, a beloved children’s character. He is a cake.

Colin’s are the cake of choice for every Brit from 1 to 100. They are technically only sold at Marks and Spencer, but every British supermarket has its own knock off (Cecil the Caterpillar etc). We love them all. And they will all be called Colin.

If you think this isn’t deadly serious, The Huffington Post actually tried the various versions and ranked them.

7. The three stages of British consumption for a night out

Step 1. Consume alcohol
Step 2. Consume kebab (only after 2am, only whilst drunk)
Step 3. Consume full English (the next morning, kebab forgotten).

8. Nothing is direct, passive-aggression is the only language we understand

Example: In a bar, buying rounds of drinks “Alright guys, whose round is it next?”
Real meaning: I know whose round it is but I’m reminding you because I refuse to ask outright.

9. Tea is to be drank in all weather, on all occasions

Heatwave? Time for tea.

Funeral? Tea will be served.

Temperature below zero? Tea is a necessity.

We don’t discriminate.

10. Marmite really is a passion.

Don’t fight it.
