Probably most other International Movers get asked this as well. Some will say yes and some will say no. Some probably will not even answer!

Here is the truth from The International Moving Doctor.

If you use good quality rubber tubs like the ones in this picture above, then you will be fine. They have the strength to be stacked up on each other so they will travel great with no issues or damage. Always stack the heaviest tubs at the bottom though.

The trouble happens when you use the cheaper plastic ones, often semi see through which are fine for your Christmas decorations to be stored in your attic or garage but not so good when you are using them to move overseas. The trouble happens when you stack four , five or six on top of each other. The one at the bottom can not support that much weight on top of it and starts to crack and split open. It might even crush and cause the ones above it to start leaning or falling which can make the whole pallet or U Crate to be unstable. On top of this (pardon the pun) the split open tub contents will get damaged and if there is anything liquid in there, it might leak which can then cause damage to other things in your shipment, such as clothes or bedding.

If you are using a U Crate, the crate sides should support the load, even if the bottom is crushing but on a pallet you could end up with some serious damage as the load is only covered with shrink wrap and sharp pieces of plastic tub could tear the cover and loose items spill out from the pallet.

So, if using plastic tubs or crates, use good quality ones that are not cheap but they will ship just fine and be good for storage in your garage, shed or attic for years to come at your overseas destination. Cardboard moving boxes are great, and cheaper if you pack them full so they can not crush and you plan on unpacking everything soon after you arrive at the destination but if items might be staying stored then definitely invest in the tubs.

I hope that helps and don’t forget to ask the International Moving Doctor at UPakWeShip if you have any questions.

It feels as if the spotlight has turned on New Zealand in recent years, and for good reason. The country is notoriously safe, has one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world, and is home to the infamous All Blacks rugby team.

But marveling their sportsmanship is a far cry from actually moving across the world to pursue a Kiwi-lifestyle. So what else should you consider before taking the plunge?

How expensive is the cost of living in New Zealand?

Frankly, it’s expensive.

New Zealand is an island nation, which means a lot of produce needs to be imported. From clothes, to alcohol, you’ll be in for a shock when you’re used to American prices. If you’re earning a New Zealand living wage, it’s a little more proportionate to the cost of living. However, be aware of the exchange rate if you’re earning USD.

To give you a helping hand the New Zealand Immigration website has a cost of living calculator, so you can figure out your finances in advance.

Is the work/life balance better in New Zealand?

The chances are, you’ll be looking into moving to New Zealand because of their relaxed work/life balance. When sheep outnumber people, you know you’re in for a very green lifestyle.

One of the best aspects of New Zealand, is that even big cities are surrounded in natural beauty. You can catch a bus, train, or drive to surrounding mountains, waterfalls, beaches and lakes within minutes. The size of New Zealand also means the average commute time is nowhere near that of America – but if you’re looking at snow-topped mountains and reflective lakes… does it really matter anyway?

How is the healthcare system in New Zealand?

If you’re a temporary resident, or citizen of New Zealand, the healthcare system is comparable to that of much of Western Europe, being either subsidized or free.

If you’re moving long-term to New Zealand, you should be on a valid visa which entitles you to healthcare. However, if you’re unsure, it’s always best to check the Ministry of Health website, and those with real doubt should always invest in private healthcare.

Unique to New Zealand, is the Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC). Regardless of whether you were at fault or not, any injury caused by an accident is covered by the ACC.

What visa do you need for New Zealand?

A move to the other side of the world, means hopefully you’ll have a job offer lined up over there. As with most countries, you’re unable to work on a tourist visa in New Zealand, so it’s imperative your visa allows you to work.

Working Holiday Visas are available to commonwealth citizens for up to 23 months, and anyone who is looking for long-term residency must complete a medical health test. Without the health test, you will not be granted a long-term visa, so we recommend organizing an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible.

How is housing in New Zealand?

As with the cost of living, New Zealand house prices are extremely high, which is why it’s recommended to rent before committing to buying.

Unlike much of the Western world, many New Zealand rent payments are weekly or every two weeks. Which is something to bear in mind when deciding to rent. Tenancy lengths vary, however, this is the most common payment timeline. Meanwhile, bills will be paid at a monthly rate.

One of the questions you will need to ask yourself, is what are you bringing with you to New Zealand? If you’d like a slice of home to come with you without breaking the bank, look into self-packing movers.

With the expense of moving to the other side of the world, shipping rather than flying your belongings is another way to save you a lot of money. If you’re organized, you can arrange for your shipment to be collected before your own scheduled flight, and you can board safe in the knowledge you’ll have a piece of home waiting for you on arrival.

Make sure your mover offers a no-hidden-cost policy. With over 30 years of experience, UPakWeShip is an expert in the industry and has upfront rates from across the US and Europe to Australia/NZ.

We have an app for that! Have this completed before loading.
Use the UPakWeShip labels app and stick on every piece as an accurate piece count is needed for Customs
Have everything packed and ready to go in a garage or downstairs room.
Pack boxes full & tight, keeping boxes the same size makes easy stacking.
Load in tiers, obviously starting at the nose and working forward.
Load it tight side to side and end to end so nothing can move.
Keep the height consistent throughout. It does not need to be all the way to the ceiling
Have enough help for loading. You need two people in the container and at least 3 people bringing items out to the edge of the container.
If there is space at the end of the container, build a Bulkhead using a mattress or plywood sheets and 4×2 wood 8 foot long in a X to hold it in place
At the destination, unload everything first and let the container go and then worry about where it all goes. You normally only get 2 hours free then it can be about $100 an hour wait time)

Bonus point. Shipping containers have a wood floor and tie hooks every 1 or 2 feet on the floor and ceiling along to edges.

We will soon be traveling to New Orleans for the I.A.M (International Association of Movers) convention meeting and exhibition.

This is where overseas movers from around the world meet up to discuss any issues in the industry as well as learn about new products and services that are available. Its also a time where we meet other owners of international moving companies and maintain partnership agreements and relationships.

We will have representation from our USA, UK and European offices in New Orleans and will be meeting many of our worldwide partners including Australia, New Zealand, Asian and South American agents.

During these meetings we learn about customs procedures and other local cultural procedures around the world so we are fully aware and up to date when you are ready to make your move overseas. It also means if you have a question that we cannot answer about a destination, we will know someone locally who can answer on our behalf.

Having been in business and members of the International Association of Movers since 1988 we have numerous long standing relationships with partners and vendors around the world that we know personally. These are companies that represent us that we can rely on for your International Relocation. Many of them are now friends. We know their families, keep in touch on a regular basis through Facebook etc. and welcome each other to stay in their houses when they are visiting in the area. These relationships behind the scenes of International Movers are what make everything in the logistics chain of an overseas move work in harmony to produce a trouble free move and most importantly a happy customer.

Mark Nash aka The Moving Doctor also sits on the board of the International Shippers Association and the Commercial Affairs group at the IAM.
