I wanted to let you know that everything arrived yesterday. All of my household goods were delivered to my apartment here in Bolzano, and I am now surrounded by totes and packing materials, which is the best kind of mess to have after sleeping on the floor for over two months. I slept in my own bed last night for the first time since leaving the United States, and I cannot tell you how good that felt.

I also wanted to take a moment to properly thank you. Since our very first call to your last email, you were always kind always patient and always willing to go above and beyond to help me. You answered my questions, you followed up when things were unclear and you never made me feel like I was being a burden, even when I know that you probably had a lot going on.

But beyond the professional help, what stayed with me the most was your genuine warmth regarding my health situation. That is not something you had to do and it meant more to me than you probably realize. Moving across the world while dealing with health challenges can feel very isolating. Your kindness made a real difference during some of my hardest days.

With sincere gratitude to UPakWeShip

Bruno

International Moving Doctor says “ thank you Bruno for the kind words about UPakWeShip and our General Manager Natalie. I totally agree that she is the best”

As of now, March 30th 2026, our online prices are still good but there is pressure on the horizon for rates to increase. This is partly due to the shipping lines adding “FSC” fuel surcharges and also the truckers hauling our shipping containers to and from the ports in the USA as well as our operations at UPakWeShip UK and UPakWeShip Europe are all paying more to fill their tanks and are passing on the extra costs to us.

While our weekly services across the Atlantic have not been effected with the Middle East situation, our Dubai service as been temporarily suspended and all the shipments that were heading to Dubai are safe in our UPakWeShip warehouse near Rotterdam waiting to see what happens.

We always honor quotes for 30 days from quote to pick up so if you are moving soon, I suggest locking into your rate and booking as soon as possible. If you are thinking of shipping in the next 60 days it is probably worth booking and shipping earlier if you can.

If not, please be prepared for increases, as gas and oil prices go up. and everything else has to follow unfortunately.

I am hoping everything goes back to normal again soon, if you have any questions, you can always contact me on email move@upakweship.com

I do not wish to alarm or pressure anyone, just giving honest advice as always….

Stay safe everyone.

Cheers,

A Family company that specializes in moving Families!

There are big corporate moving companies that specialize in moving big corporate employees with big relocation budgets. There are also big corporate companies that specialize in moving Military families and Government employees. Most do a great job and offer what’s called a white glove service for their customers. But do they have the time, patience, staff and competitiveness to look after the family who is paying for themselves that need some handholding and friendly helpful advice through the process?

That’s where UPakWeShip comes into its own! UPakWeShip is a family run business with 7 family members spread between its offices in the USA, Europe and the UK. With operations on both sides of the Atlantic, most of our moves are controlled and managed by UPakWeShip with no third-party agents contacting you.

Why is having one company door to door so important? It allows us to maintain a high standard of quality control, operational and communications, and most importantly stops extra fees being billed to you by third parties. How often do you see reviews online that say the move was ok, but we were charged an extra fee before delivery for various made-up reasons. It’s common practice for the delivery agent that probably only won the job by being the cheapest to make more profit by charging extras on the delivery. Not with UPakWeShip though!

Many years ago, we were so fed up with this practice and complaints from our customers when we used a third-party mover, that we decided to set up our own company in the UK and Europe so that we could make sure this did not happen anymore.

When moving with UPakWeShip, you will feel the difference between us and the big guys, we answer the phone, you can always speak to the same person you did last time and we are knowledgeable, friendly, patient and most importantly give you a lump sum all inclusive price without the worry of extra sneaky fees being made up to line some large corporations pockets! See UPakWeShip’s price guarantee here.

We are the UPakWeShip family that wants to help your family relocate with no stress or worries.

One company door to door. Get all inclusive moving and shipping rates online with our international moving cost calculator.

The quick simple answer is no, providing you have all your boxes in a row!

Here is the more detailed answer.

U Crates, Pallets and Shared Container Services

If you are shipping U Crates, Pallets or our shared container service we have a simplified customs clearance process at our the UPakWeShip office in Rotterdam which allows us to not charge you any customs duties or taxes on your shipment providing you provide us with your passport and a signed declaration that all the goods are yours and used and not for re sale. We also need a packing list with a non-detailed description of what is in each box. By that I mean box 1 Kitchenware, not 14 forks and 12 knives etc. It’s all very easy and simple.

We can also store your things in our warehouse if you are still looking for a place to stay. The storage rate is 25 Euros per pallet per week, so if you had three U Crates or pallets the rate would be 75 Euros per week.

20ft and 40ft Self Lod Shipping Containers

If, however, you are loading a 20ft or 40ft shipping container yourself, then the container will have to be shipped direct to the nearest port in the country you are moving to. As this is a large shipment and arriving in the country of final delivery you will have to abide by the customs regulations of that country. We obviously do provide you with the documentation requirements and it varies with each European Country, but you will need a visa to show you are approved to be moving there and complete numerous forms and often provide proof you have lived outside of Europe for the past 12 months. Many countries require an interview at the embassy or consulate in the USA before you get your visa to move. Providing you get all the documentation requirements to us before your container arrives at the destination, we should be able to clear it through customs with no duties or taxes, but if anything is wrong or missing, the local customs office in the European country might charge you duties and taxes so do your homework and prepare well in advance. Also worth noting here is most of the shipping lines that provide the containers to go on their ships, typically only allow 3-5 days free at the destination before they start charging you for keeping their container, even if it hasn’t cleared customs yet. The port also jumps on the band wagon and will charge for the space your container is using, sitting in the port after 3-5 days while waiting. This is called rent and demurrage and will be invoiced to you for payment before delivery if the container takes too long to clear through customs or if further documentation is required by customs or any hold-ups. This is typical in countries like Spain and Portugal where the process can be slow.

As the shipping lines own the containers and want them back asap so they can re load them, we can not offer storage for your container so after if clears customs if you need it stored, the best thing to do is find a local self-storage place where we can deliver the container to, for you to unload.

Before embarking on your journey to relocate from the US to Europe, thorough research and meticulous preparation are crucial to ensure a smooth transition. This phase is pivotal in making informed decisions about visa options that align with your personal preferences and needs.

Choosing the Right European Country

Selecting the ideal European country for your move is a major factor in ensuring a successful transition. Each European country offers its own advantages, from affordable living costs to unique cultural attractions and employment opportunities.

For example, Portugal and Spain are renowned for their warm climates and relaxed lifestyles, making them popular among retirees and digital nomads. On the other hand, countries like Germany and the Netherlands boast strong economies and a wealth of job opportunities, attracting working professionals from around the world.

When considering your options, it’s important to research the living costs, visa requirements, and local amenities in many European countries. Understanding these key factors will help you choose a destination that aligns with your lifestyle, career goals, and personal preferences.

Affordable Countries to Live in

If you’re looking to move to Europe without breaking the bank, there are several affordable countries that offer a high quality of life at a lower cost. Portugal, Spain, and Eastern European countries such as Poland and Bulgaria are known for their affordable living costs, making them attractive options for American expats. These European countries not only provide a comfortable lifestyle but also offer access to excellent healthcare, education, and public services.

Many of these affordable countries have introduced golden visa programs, which allow you to obtain a residence permit, and eventually permanent residency, through a minimum investment. This makes it easier for expats to settle down and enjoy all the benefits of living in Europe, from beautiful scenery to a welcoming local community.

European Countries and Cities

Selecting the right European destination is paramount when planning your move to several European countries. Begin by researching all aspects of different European countries and cities to find the best fit for your lifestyle and aspirations. Consider factors such as cost of living, visa and residency requirements, language, job market, cultural activities, and social norms.

Living in a major city can help ease language barriers and provide more resources for expats, making integration smoother. EU countries each have different policies and opportunities for expats, so it’s important to compare what each offers.

When evaluating your options, look at how visa and residency programs in other European countries may differ, such as Golden Visas or digital nomad schemes. The diversity among European nations means you can choose from a wide range of cultures and lifestyles to suit your preferences.

Moving to Europe means navigating visas and residency permits, which differ depending on your destination and reason for moving. Luckily, many countries now offer straightforward residency schemes to help expats, including Americans, settle legally.

Types of Visas and Residency Permits

Golden visa programs have become a popular route for Americans seeking residency in a European country. In exchange, applicants receive a residence permit, which can pave the way to permanent residency and even citizenship in the future.

Portugal’s Golden Visa program, for example, is highly sought after and requires a minimum investment of €500,000 in real estate. Other countries, including Spain and Greece, offer their own golden visa schemes with varying requirements. For those looking to move to Europe and enjoy the benefits of living in the European Union, golden visas provide a straightforward and flexible pathway to establishing a new life abroad.

Digital Nomad Visa Programs

The rise of remote work has made it easier than ever for Americans to live abroad as digital nomads. Many European countries now offer digital nomad visas, designed specifically for remote workers who want to experience life in a new country while continuing their careers online. Countries like Estonia, Georgia, and Portugal have introduced digital nomad visas that allow you to live and work legally for an extended period.

These visas usually require proof of income, health insurance, and a clean criminal record, making the application process accessible for many remote workers. Before making the move, it’s important to research the local culture, living costs, and visa requirements in your target country to ensure a smooth transition. Embracing life abroad as a digital nomad offers the chance to explore new European cities, connect with diverse communities, and enjoy a flexible, enriching lifestyle.

Preparing for the Move: Costs and Logistics

Planning and budgeting carefully is essential when preparing for a move to Europe. Costs can vary significantly depending on your destination country, the size of your household, the services you require, and your chosen shipping method. Transportation and settling-in costs once you arrive also contribute to the overall expense.

To keep costs manageable, consider downsizing your belongings and focusing on essentials. Reducing what you ship not only lowers expenses but also simplifies the logistics of your move, making the transition smoother from start to finish.

Shipping Belongings

UPakWeShip offers affordable international moving solutions, including self-pack services and U-Crate shipping, which help streamline the customs process and make the transition as smooth as possible. Their U-Crate options come in three sizes to suit different move sizes:

Finding Accommodation

Securing temporary accommodation before your arrival in Europe is an important first step. Popular options include Airbnb, short-term rentals, hotels, and serviced apartments. These provide flexibility and comfort as you get to know your new city and explore different neighbourhoods before committing to a longer-term lease.

Airbnb is especially useful for finding fully furnished apartments with flexible rental periods, giving you the freedom to settle in gradually. Additionally, many European cities have active Facebook groups dedicated to expats and local housing. These groups often post rental opportunities, sublets, and roommate searches, along with practical advice on navigating the rental market. Joining these communities can provide insider information and direct connections to landlords or current tenants.

When searching for longer-term accommodation, websites like Idealista, Spotahome, and HousingAnywhere are popular across Europe for verified listings. It’s advisable to visit potential properties in person when possible or arrange virtual tours if you’re moving from abroad.

Keep in mind that rental agreements in Europe may require a deposit, proof of income, and references, so preparing these documents in advance can speed up the process. Understanding local rental laws and tenant rights is also important to ensure a smooth and fair leasing experience.

Banking and Taxes in Europe

Managing your finances efficiently is crucial when moving to Europe, and opening a local bank account should be a top priority to facilitate everyday transactions and salary deposits. It’s essential to understand both U.S. and foreign tax obligations, as expats must often comply with tax requirements in both countries.

Additionally, working for a foreign company can offer significant benefits, such as visa sponsorship and expanded employment opportunities. Consider understanding the tax system and making financial adjustments such as currency exchange rates, worldwide income, retirement planning, and investment options.

Healthcare Options in Europe

Understanding the healthcare system in your chosen European country is vital for your well-being. Be aware of the differences between the US and European healthcare systems, including your healthcare insurance, costs and benefits, and access to affordable healthcare elsewhere.

Adjusting to Life in Europe

European cultures are rich and diverse, shaped by centuries of history, language, and regional traditions. While customs vary across countries, many European societies value social connection, cultural heritage, and a balanced lifestyle. Compared to American culture, day-to-day life in Europe often feels more relaxed, with a strong emphasis on enjoying leisure time, community life, and meaningful work-life balance.

Researching Local Culture and Customs

Researching local culture and customs is essential for adjusting smoothly to life in a new European city. Taking the time to understand social norms and etiquette will help you feel more at home and foster positive relationships with locals. Every city has its own unique way of greeting people, whether that’s a handshake, a kiss on the cheek, or another gesture, so it’s helpful to learn what is customary. Understanding traditions around gift-giving, dress codes, and appropriate behaviour in public spaces can prevent misunderstandings and show respect. For instance, some cultures place great importance on punctuality, while others take a more relaxed approach.

If the local language is different from your native tongue, investing time in learning it can greatly improve your experience. Enrolling in language classes, joining conversation groups, or using apps like Duolingo, Babbel, or Mondly can boost your confidence and help you communicate effectively. Even mastering a few basic phrases and polite expressions can open doors and demonstrate your willingness to engage with the community.

Immersing yourself in local cultural activities is another excellent way to connect with your new environment. Look into museums, galleries, theatre performances, music festivals, and traditional celebrations in your city. Attending these events not only offers insight into local customs but also provides opportunities to meet new people. Many cities also host expat meetups or community gatherings that can help you build friendships and support networks.

Exploring local cuisine is a wonderful way to deepen your cultural understanding. Sampling traditional dishes and familiarising yourself with local dining etiquette can make meals more enjoyable and social. Trying new foods at markets, cafés, and restaurants often leads to shared experiences with locals. Taking part in cooking classes or food tours can add an interactive and fun dimension to your cultural journey.

By approaching your new home with openness and curiosity, you’ll enrich your experience abroad and create meaningful connections within the community.

Setting Up Banking and Mobile Phone Services

Opening a local bank account is an important first step when settling in Europe. Research different banks to compare account options, then visit a branch with the required identification documents to open your account. For staying connected, explore mobile phone providers and plans to find one that fits your needs. If you have an unlocked phone, purchasing a local SIM card can be a quick and cost-effective way to get mobile service.

Exploring the Local Area and Building a Support System

Getting involved in your new community makes settling in much easier. Attend local events, join clubs, or volunteer to meet people and build connections. Language exchange programs and conversation partners can help you improve your language skills while making local friends. Online expat groups on social media offer advice, support, and opportunities to socialise. Attending industry-related events or conferences is useful for building professional networks. Take advantage of local services such as gyms, libraries, and community centres, which provide great opportunities to meet like-minded individuals.

Moving to Europe is a transformative experience with its share of challenges and opportunities. By managing practical arrangements, embracing the culture, completing necessary registrations, and building a supportive network, you’ll set the foundation for a balanced and fulfilling life in your new home.

So here is my take!

If you have some boxes of stuff that you want to get overseas the cheapest way possible, look at our pallet service.

If you can pay a dew hundred more I really recommend our U Crate 100’s to protect all your stuff. You load it up at your house and we deliver the same crate to your driveway overseas.

If you really need to take your bed, then I suggest the U Crate 200 but you do have to hire a truck and load the crate on the truck and drive it to the local terminal. A bit of a pain and personally I would rather ditch the bed and use the U 100 ‘s You can ship 1,2,3,4, even 5 U Crate 100’s and they are still cost effective.

If you have a bunch of boxes, sofa, bed, desk and say an arm chair then I suggest packing it all well and put it in a Pack rat or Unites container at your house. It then gets trucked to our terminal near Charleston where we unload and transship it into our own shipping container loaded with all the other pallets and U Crates off to the same area.

If you are thinking you want to take the whole house load of stuff with you then use a self load 20 or 40ft container. These containers though for Europe have to go into the destination country direct and some of the customs paperwork for France, Portugal, Italy, Spain for example can be a bit tricky whereas all the other services above for Europe would go via our terminal near Rotterdam NL and have a very simple customs clearance (in English) into Europe.

Entering Vienna, Austria is akin to stepping into a fairy tale. This vibrant and historic city, the capital of Austria, is a captivating blend of baroque architecture, lush green parks, and vibrant street life. With its affordable cost high standard of living, and rich cultural scene, Vienna is not only one of the best European cities to live in but has also consistently ranked high in global quality of life surveys.

Vienna, a central hub for arts and culture, houses numerous museums, galleries, and concert halls, making it a paradise for art and music lovers. The city’s efficient public transportation system, known as the “Öffis”, ensures that all these cultural treasures are just a short ride away.

Furthermore, Vienna’s family-friendly neighborhoods and low crime rate make it a perfect place for families and young professionals.

Cost of living in Vienna

Although Vienna is a major European capital, it offers a surprisingly affordable cost of living. For a single person, the monthly expenditure without rent can be around $1,084.3 (994.3€), making it a top choice for expats. Housing options vary in size and location, but on average, a one-bedroom apartment in the city center costs around €800 per month.

The cost of living in the city is relatively affordable. Here are some examples:

Utilities average around €313 per month for a two-person household in an 85m2 flat.

The cost of groceries and dining out is relatively low compared to other European cities.

This makes it possible to enjoy the city’s culinary delights without breaking the bank.

Language & Cultural Integration

Language and cultural integration often pose significant concerns for many expats relocating to a new country. Fortunately, Vienna offers plenty of resources to help newcomers learn the local language and adapt to the local culture. German courses are offered at renowned institutions such as Berlitz, and for more informal practice, there are language exchange platforms like Tandem.

Cultural integration is equally important, and Vienna offers a wealth of opportunities for expats to immerse themselves in the local culture. Some ways to do this include:

Attending local festivals and cultural events

Joining local clubs and organisations

Participating in language exchange programs

Exploring the city’s museums and art galleries

Trying traditional Austrian cuisine
