Portugal is a gem in Western Europe, offering a variety of advantages that make it an attractive destination for expats. With its affordable cost of living, amazing weather, and rich cultural heritage, Portugal stands out among other European countries and is a prime example of a European country.

From the bustling urban centers to the serene rural areas, there’s something in Portugal for everyone. Here are some of the key benefits of living in this beautiful country.

Affordable Cost of Living

One of the biggest draws for expats is Portugal’s relatively low cost of living compared to other Western European countries. Whether you’re renting a cozy apartment in Lisbon or buying a property in the Algarve, housing is often more affordable. Groceries, dining out, and transportation are also reasonably priced, making it an attractive option for retirees and young professionals alike. Living expenses in Portugal can be approximately 37% lower than in the US, with a monthly budget of $1,300-$1,800 sufficing for a comfortable lifestyle in smaller towns.

Beyond just the basics, Portugal offers an attractive tax system and free education, further enhancing its appeal. The affordable cost of living, combined with the country’s pleasant climate and diverse expat community, makes Portugal a top choice for those looking to relocate.

Amazing Weather

Portugal boasts a Mediterranean climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The Atlantic Ocean significantly influences Portugal’s climate, contributing to cooler water temperatures and offering stunning coastal views and recreational activities. Summers are warm and dry, while winters are mild, especially in the southern regions. If you’ve been dreaming of sun-soaked days, Portugal delivers in abundance. The average temperature in January in Lisbon is around +14.7°C, and it rarely experiences snow, contributing to its mild winter climate.

The sunny climate enhances daily life and makes Portugal an ideal place for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re lounging on its stunning beaches or exploring its picturesque landscapes, the pleasant weather adds a touch of magic to life in Portugal.

Beautiful Landscapes

From the golden beaches of the Algarve to the rolling vineyards of the Douro Valley, Portugal offers a diverse range of natural beauty. Whether you love hiking, surfing, or simply relaxing by the sea, there’s something for everyone. Portugal is home to 440 Blue Flag beaches, recognized for their cleanliness and facilities, highlighting its status as a premier beach destination.

In addition to its stunning beaches, Portugal’s landscapes include breathtaking mountains, lush forests, and charming rural areas. This variety of natural beauty makes it a paradise for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike, offering endless opportunities to explore and enjoy the great outdoors.

Rich Culture and History

Portugal’s history spans centuries, evident in its castles, palaces, and cobblestone streets. Portuguese universities are renowned for their educational quality and are recognized across the EU, making them appealing to international students. As an expat, you’ll have the chance to explore historic cities like Porto and Lisbon, attend traditional festivals, and savor world-class wines and cuisine. Portugal offers a wealth of cultural experiences, including traditional festivals, historic castles, and renowned wine regions, enriching the expat living experience.

Expats can immerse themselves in Portugal’s rich heritage by exploring historic cities and participating in local traditions and festivals. The country’s numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites stand as a testament to its rich cultural legacy, offering endless opportunities for cultural exploration, including the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Expat-Friendly Environment

Portugal is known for its welcoming and friendly locals. Many Portuguese people speak English, especially in urban areas, which makes settling in easier. Additionally, the country has a growing expat community, offering plenty of opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals. International schools in major cities like Lisbon and Porto provide high-quality, multicultural education that aligns with global curricula, making them appealing options for expatriate families. There are numerous expat communities across Portugal, particularly in areas like Lisbon and Porto, providing support and networking opportunities for newcomers.

Portugal is ranked 8th globally for English proficiency, facilitating communication for expatriates and enhancing their integration into local communities. This expat-friendly environment, combined with the country’s pleasant climate and beautiful landscapes, makes Portugal an ideal place for foreign residents.

Quality of Life

With a laid-back lifestyle and an emphasis on work-life balance, life in Portugal feels slower and more enjoyable. Combine that with excellent healthcare and a safe environment, and it’s easy to see why many expats choose to call Portugal home.

Portugal emphasizes a relaxed lifestyle, with many locals prioritizing work-life balance, contributing to a more enjoyable living experience. The laid-back lifestyle in Portugal is complemented by an emphasis on work-life balance, contributing to a generally relaxed pace of living. Many people choose to live in Portugal for these reasons.

The country’s excellent healthcare system and safe environment further enhance the quality of life for its residents, making it a desirable destination for expats.

Cons of Living in Portugal

While Portugal has many advantages, it’s important to consider the potential downsides as well. From bureaucratic hurdles to language barriers, there are challenges that expats may face when living in Portugal.

Here are some of the cons of making Portugal your new home.

Bureaucracy

One of the most common complaints among expats is the slow and sometimes confusing bureaucracy in Portugal, often influenced by the Portuguese government. Whether you’re setting up a bank account, applying for a visa, or registering for healthcare, the processes can be time-consuming. Newcomers often find the bureaucratic processes in Portugal to be complex, requiring patience and thorough understanding to navigate effectively.

Over half of expats report struggles with local bureaucracy, indicating significant challenges in accessing government services and navigating administrative tasks. These bureaucratic hurdles can be frustrating, but with patience and persistence, they can be overcome.

Language Barrier

While many locals speak English, especially younger generations, learning Portuguese is essential for deeper integration into the community. The Portuguese language, which is widely spoken, can be challenging to learn, but it’s a rewarding experience that helps you connect with locals on a deeper level. In rural areas, English proficiency may be much lower, making it challenging for expats to communicate without knowledge of Portuguese.

Despite the presence of English speakers, the complexity of Portuguese can pose a barrier, making it harder for expats to fully engage with the local community. Learning Portuguese, even at a basic level, can significantly enhance your experience and help you better integrate into Portuguese life.

Lower Wages

If you’re planning to work in Portugal, keep in mind that salaries are generally lower compared to other Western European countries. While the cost of living is also lower, it may take some adjustment if you’re used to higher wages. Job seekers might face challenges as the average salary in Portugal is lower than in many Western European nations, impacting financial expectations.

Job opportunities in Portugal are often limited, leading to lower career prospects and dissatisfaction among ex-pats regarding the local job market. It’s important to consider these factors when planning your move to Portugal.

Seasonal Tourism

In popular tourist destinations like Lisbon, Porto, and the Algarve, the influx of visitors during peak seasons can be overwhelming. Expats living in these areas may find the crowded streets and increased prices during summer months to be a downside. The influx of tourists during summer can lead to long wait times and crowded attractions, impacting daily life for local residents.

The surge in tourists during the high season can disrupt daily life for residents in major cities, leading to overcrowded public spaces and increased costs. While tourism is a vital part of the economy, it can also present challenges for those living in popular tourist areas.

Limited Public Transportation in Rural Areas

While urban areas have efficient public transport options, rural regions can be harder to navigate without a car. If you plan to live outside major cities, owning a vehicle might be necessary. Public transport options in rural regions are often sparse, making car ownership a necessity for those living outside urban areas.

Public transport in rural regions is notably sparse, making car ownership almost essential for those living outside urban areas. This can be a significant consideration for expats looking to live in the more remote and picturesque parts of Portugal.

Housing Market Challenges

The increasing popularity of Portugal among expats has driven up property prices in certain areas, particularly Lisbon and Porto. Finding affordable housing in these cities can be competitive. In recent years, the demand for housing in urban areas like Lisbon has escalated property prices, creating a competitive market for potential renters and buyers.

The rise in demand for housing due to expats has inflated property prices, making it more difficult for newcomers to find affordable accommodations in desirable cities. It’s important to be aware of these challenges when planning your move to Portugal.

What to Expect When Moving to Portugal

Expect to savor long lunches, build strong community ties, and enjoy a slower pace of life. But also be prepared to navigate some administrative hurdles and adjust to cultural differences.

The welcoming and friendly locals make it easier to settle in, and with many Portuguese people speaking English, communication is often not a major barrier. This experience allows you to appreciate Portuguese culture in a profound way.

Thank you for hiring staff who understand the benefit of offering good guidance for new customers who may not have previously shipped goods internationally. By that I mean communication beyond the very specific and effective checklists and videos.

Alicia Hawk is exceptional at providing information that helped guide us through the process of shipping from Austin Texas to Portugal. There simply are not enough words to describe how terrific she is when communicating with someone like me, who tends to have a lot of questions. And her responsiveness was impressive.

Elda Martinez, out of the European Office is also exceptional, providing the information needed to guide us after the crate arrived in Rotterdam. From the date it left Rotterdam through the anticipated delivery date she was very responsive to my many questions. Her communication style squashed any fears I may have dreamed up.

Both women delivered information in a highly professional manner and represented your company in the best possible way.

It is my distinct pleasure to have an opportunity to draft this message to you.

By the way, the shipping went so well, we’re back in the states preparing to ship additional goods with your company. The only items we will not ship with you are our oriental rugs and original artwork, both which require climate controlled containers.

Sincerely,

Kathleen

If you have more than a U Crate 200’s worth of stuff and may be some furniture, consider our shared container service. We have all inclusive rates from our terminal in South Carolina to your final destination overseas. All you do is book a Pod, U Haul Crate or in this case a Pack Rat container from your place to ours. We unload it onto pallets and ship it in our weekly container service to: in this case Rotterdam, with a final destination of Portugal.

Once it arrives in Rotterdam UPakWeShip clears it with a simple procedure through customs and delivers everything into your residence.

The shared container rate to Portugal is at the moment $13.50 per cubic foot.

Another smart way to move with UPakWeShip !

Guess where this lovely couple are moving to?

They have done such a fantastic job packing and loading their pallets.

It looks like they used the same size boxes to pack everything so it all stacked nicely together. The shrink wrapping and tie straps are perfect and obviously you can see they are well labelled.

We have mailed you some travel tags and mugs for your journey as a thank you for the pictures and we wish you bon voyage.

Thanks for sharing and using UPakWeShip.

Moving to Portugal?

Please read this before you go!

Although the Golden Visa has been discontinued in Portugal, there are still multiple ways of moving and residing there and Portugal is still a hot spot for UPakWeShip. In fact, it is one of the top three destinations we ship to from the USA along with Germany and England.

We are very lucky to be recommended by numerous Facebook groups, magazines, corporations, and of course previous shippers we have moved to Portugal.

That being said I want to clarify one point.

If you are moving your whole house load in a self-load 20 foot or 40 foot shipping container, we will be shipping the container into the closest port to your destination. You and us will have to deal with customs in Portugal and the rules are strict regarding all the paperwork you need like the Baggage Certificate. We have a whole document in pdf format we can email you if you would like to know all the documentation you will need to obtain and provide.

BUT…..

If you are shipping a few U Crates or Pallets to Portugal, we ship these with all our other U Crates and Pallets going to Europe in a 40 foot container to Rotterdam. We clear customs into Europe in the Netherlands and UPakWeShip distributes them for delivery all over Europe. The paperwork required for this service is a lot simpler and is basically a couple of forms to sign that we provide you, plus a copy of your passport and a packing list of what you are shipping.

The reason I am explaining this is a customer might have shipped a U Crate with us and very kindly recommends us to a friend who is moving a container load and in her recommendation says the paperwork with UPakWeShip is simple and easy!

So as long as everyone is aware of the difference not just for Portugal but anywhere in Europe.

20-foot and 40-foot Shipping containers go to the nearest destination port and proper import documentation is required as per that Countries Customs Regulations but if you are shipping U Crates or Pallets then the customs process is a lot easier via our service and route via Rotterdam into Europe.

I hope this helps.

Happy Packing!

If you are moving or thinking about moving to Portugal you should subscribe to Portugal Living Magazine by clicking here.

As an expat living in Portugal, Bruce is full of information about the trials and tribulations of moving to and living in Portugal and is willing to share some valuable information with those thinking about doing the same.

Lets start off by asking where are you from Bruce and how long have you lived in Portugal?

I’m North American, from the USA. This is my fourth year living in Portugal.

Why Portugal?

We’ve had a vacation bolt for 15 years in Spain — still do — but we prefer Portugal for our permanent residence. Why? It’s got charm, soul, spirit, great people, a favorable cost of living, peace, and lots of lovely little villages.

What does Portugal have that say Spain or France doesn’t have?
Saudade … that sense of longing and yearning. While Spain and France may be more spirited, Portugal’s got more soul (I believe).

What are your top 3 things you love about Portugal?
The people. The places. The peacefulness.

Is there anything you do not love about Portugal?
The bureaucracy. And that it’s so difficult for the Portuguese to earn a decent living here that they tend to leave their homes in favor of the big cities–here and abroad. What are your top 3 things you miss about the USA ?
Family. Friends. Foods.

The Yes or No part

What all Americans need to know….
Amazon available? Yes.
Netflix? Yes.
Electrical Appliances work? Yes.
Apple TV? No.
Voltage? Had to up our potencia in each of our homes here.
Vinmo? Vinmo? If you’re talking about vinho, absolutely! Tinto, por favor. I like this guy, I’m trying to talk about a money transfer service and he changes it to wine lol
Good WI-Fi & Internet? Sim.
Most popular cell phone service? None of them are considered “popular,” but we’ve gone with MEO.
Most Popular Bank? Montepio. For 2€ per month, we get lower bank costs and medical/health insurance superior to what we’re paying for privately.
Most popular Grocery Store? Continente.
Most popular Beer? LOL! There are only two: Sagres and Super Bok.
Starbucks? Dominos? McDonalds? Subway? Não, não, não!!!

What do you know now that you didn’t know before you arrived in Portugal?
Portuguese. The language is quite challenging–maybe even more so for me because I’m fluent in Spanish. Quite the stumbling block!

How did you select your international moving / shipping company?
Internet search, then, process of elimination.

Why did you select them?

I didn’t know about the options available on this side of the pond … so, the company we went with was the most honorable among thieves. Obviously he didn’t find all the recommendations from facebook groups suggesting he goes to UPakWeShip or find the all-inclusive lump sum prices online here.

Any personal advice having now completed the international move?
Be prepared–the Boy Scout motto. And be patient, very patient.

What are the definite things to pack and ship to Portugal in your opinion?
Little things: aspirin, over-the-counter eye drops, red pepper flakes, real vanilla extract, hot and spicy sauce–anything but Piri Piri!

I think many expats might worry about health care abroad, how are you getting on with this?
I was on Medicare back in the USA, so I didn’t have any real problems.
My partner, however, had to rely on the Affordable Care Act Marketplace.
Imagine paying US $1,250 per month for the mediocre “bronze” coverage, when we pay €2,000 per year for comprehensive health care coverage in the private sector that covers us both! Plus, of course, as residents we are part of Portugal’s National Health Care Service (which costs us nothing).

How is your Portuguese, obviously we know everyone must try and make an effort with some basic words but do you fine most people understand English?
At this point, I can carry on conversations, ask and answer questions, deal with doctors and tradespeople, and complain in Portuguese. But, as mentioned above, Spanish will always be a stumbling block for me; I may know the language and understand its grammar, but my pronunciation always gives me away. Portuguese people initially think I’m Spanish … then English (i.e., from the UK). So many people here speak English better than I do Portuguese — English is part of their core curriculum in school, not considered a “foreign” language — and they’re eager to be “helpful” by speaking English with us. But it’s difficult to learn Portuguese without the practice, which I explain to them.

Top Tips for moving to Portugal?
Don’t regret making the move … and don’t look back. While some people believe that everything that doesn’t fit into a suitcase (or two) should be left behind, we don’t agree. Over the course of our 30-year history together, we collected a lot of “stuff” that means a lot to us. Sentimental value, I guess. But I would never want to regret leaving behind those ingredients which made our life together so home-y and comfortable. I totally agree with this Steve, having your personal history with you helps you settle in and makes your home personal

Just for fun….

Do you get home very often? And when you do, what is the first food you want that you can’t get in Portugal?
No. That’s actually a major issue for us. We have no desire whatsoever to return to the USA unless and until the political warfare, the divisions, the massacres, and the hate turn around for the better. This is one of the most difficult aspects of living abroad for me: I have yet to hold my 18-month-old granddaughter. We videochat (my son,
daughter(in-law) and granddaughter every Sunday. Yet, for the reasons I’ve mentioned — and Covid restrictions — we’ve not been together in “real” time (or place). I’ve offered to pay their expenses to come and visit us in Portugal for however long they can manage, but it’s difficult and complicated for them, too, at this point in their
(professional) lives.

As difficult as it is to answer this first part of your question, Mark, the second part is far easier: The first food I’d eat, which we can’t get here in Portugal, is a hot pastrami sandwich with a pickle and coleslaw in New York City!

Pickles…… really? Being English the only pickles I like come in a jar with Branston written on it lol

Portugal has become a hotspot for both American and European expats, but it often remains a vacation-home destination, rather than a permanent residence.

This makes Portugal the perfect place for an authentic, European experience. Situated on the border of Spain, and renowned for its welcoming culture, it’s little wonder you’re considering it as your next adventure.

As you’d expect, there are vast differences between America and Europe – but what about Portugal in particular?

This guide offers you all you need to know about making the move:

How to get a visa for Portugal

We’ll keep the visa section short and sweet, under the presumption that if you’re looking at moving to Portugal, you’ll know if you can can move to Portugal.

Initially, American citizens can visit Portugal for up to 90 days Visa-free. However, after this period, things will become a little more difficult.

You do have several options however, from student visas for those studying to investors. Portugal also offers a Golden Visa, for those who will do one of the following: Bring in over US$1.36m, buy a property for $618k minimum, or create at least 10 jobs in the country.

For those who don’t fall into the above categories, most US and Canadian citizens opt for the Type 1 Visa, which covers many other reasons to move to Portugal, from retirement to starting a business. If you apply for this visa, you must also prove you have private healthcare which is valid in Europe, and have the funds to cover living and accommodation costs in Portugal.

What the Portuguese economy is like for Expats

There are no two ways around it, the Eurozone recession hit Portugal hard. The economy is steadily trying to crawl upwards, however as with most places in Europe, unemployment is on the rise whilst wages are declining.

That is not to say that jobs don’t exist, and if you speak both English and Portuguese, you’ll be highly employable for those jobs which do exist. However, if you’re not moving due to a job-role relocation, or for retirement, it’s pretty vital to have a job lined up in advance.

The Portuguese equivalent of a social security number is an NIF number, which will need to be presented in any formal activities, including opening up a bank account…

Opening up a bank account in Portugal

The good news is once you’ve gone through the visa process, opening up a bank account in Portugal is an easy process, just bring along your passport, a proof of address, and your NIF number.

There are literally hundreds of options for banking in Portugal – which is a eurozone country – from public and cooperative banks to international banks. It also boasts one of the most advanced inter-bank networks worldwide through Multibanco.

There are some notable differences between American monetary exchange, and European. For instance, drive-thru ATMs don’t exist in Europe, which means you’ll be taking cash out from a ‘hole-in-the-wall’ as they’re known in the UK. Another thing worth noting is chip and pin is the European way of life, although most places also take contactless cards now too.

Where to live in Portugal

There’s a whole lot to consider when moving house, whether that’s interstate or across the other side of the world.

If your home isn’t job-dependent, Portugal is home to some incredible towns and cities, rich in history and architecture, so if anything you’re spoiled for choice. The most popular Portuguese towns and cities for expats are:

Lisbon
The capital of Portugal, Lisbon provides the most job opportunities, whilst also offering a diverse range in lifestyles. It’s proximity to the sea means you truly get to live the best of both worlds, and with a metro system you can leave the car at home.

Porto
Porto is Lisbon’s largest competitor, with a reputation as the culture and entertainment capital. Situated on the Douro River, it is very popular with tourists and expats alike, for its vibrant way of life. However, for those looking to relocate for the weather, Porto’s Northern location makes it’s summers shorter than average, and its winter rather wet.

Braga
In the north of Portugal, sits Braga, the country’s oldest city. With cheaper house prices and a slower-paced way of life, Braga offers a chilled-out alternative to Lisbon and Porto.

Algarve
If you’ve spent any time around Europeans, or you are European, the chances are you’ve heard of the Algarve – the destination of choice for the majority of European tourists and expats. Renowned for its strong sense of community and great weather, the south of Portugal is the place of choice for many.

Renting or Buying in Portugal

Once you’ve determined your location, you’ll be questioning whether to rent or buy in the country.

Something to remember is that owning your own house is an extremely UK/US priority, with many Europeans not buying a property until they’re much older, prioritizing saving and renting instead.

Buying vs renting will depend on your long-term plans. As with properties in the US, furnishing is dependent entirely on the landlord/seller but isn’t to be expected.

Either way, you’ll need to consider what you’re bringing to your new home in Portugal. What furniture will you be bringing? Many movers want to have a little familiarity and look to move some of their belongings overseas. If this is you, your options are air-carrier or shipping. Whilst flying your items over may be quicker, shipping is often the preferred method with movers, due to the lower costs.

If you do choose to ship your belongings, remember to look for a mover with no-hidden-fees. Many quotes will differ significantly to the price presented at the end, so ensure you’ve accounted for any tax and customs expenses. To cover all bases, it’s worth looking into what to ask your moving company.

UPakWesShip is an experienced moving company with over 30 years expertise in shipping internationally. With a range of options to suit your needs and a self-packing service, we endeavor to make your move as stress-free and low cost as possible.

Mar 18, 2014 by Hudson

Just shipped my boxes yesterday, and it was a painless process overall. And I can’t help but feel that a large part of that comes down to the rep assigned (or rather, condemned) to work with me, Alicia. She has been unfailingly patient with me–a person who forgets everything at least three times before he remembers, asks a million inane questions (sometimes the same one more than once) and panics easily when stressed. She was always kind, always patient, and always in good humor, and helped me step-by-step get the whole thing happening and accomplished. Don’t know what we would have done without her. Just exactly how the person doing her job should be, and then some.
