Moving to the Netherlands, part two
Here are five slightly out of the ordinary international moving tips

Buy some voltage transformers. Although we are leaving most of our electrical appliances behind as the voltage is 220 in Europe and not 110 like the USA, there are a few electronic items we are shipping overseas.. Being a musician, I am taking a keyboard and my electric drum set for example. In order to buy the correct voltage transformer you need to check the total wattage consumed by the electrical device and multiply that number by 3. You need a converter at least 3x the watts of the devices to leave enough room for surges in power they may utilize. Of course, I own the only keyboard that does not tell you the wattage so have gone with a 300 watt, which I think, is more than ample. Talking of amples, you may find “Amps,” also known as “amperage” or “A”. If only the amperage is noted, multiply the input voltage by the amperage to find the wattage. Use the following example as a guide: Volts x Amps = Watts or 110V x 1.5 A = 165W.

Order new copies of marriage, divorce and birth certificates and get them Apostilled. An Apostille or authentication is a state certification of the signature of an official who has signed a public document. We went to the SC capital Columbia with our passports to get them done. You will probably need to produce these if you are looking to obtain a work visa in Europe.
You will need to register with the local municipality when you get there.

Make sure the hotel, Air B&B or wherever you are staying, allows you to use the temporary address for registration.

Obtain your medical records from your doctor to take with you and if you are on any medication, ask the doctor for a 90 day supply to hand carry with you so you will not run out.

Buy some USB chargers with European plug ends on them on Amazon and take with you so you can charge everything as soon as you get there.
More tips to come for moving to Europe.

Here are five slightly out of the ordinary international moving tips.

1/ Buy some voltage transformers. Although we are leaving most of our electrical appliances behind as the voltage is 220 in Europe and not 110 like the USA, there are a few electronic items we are shipping overseas.. Being a musician, I am taking a keyboard and my electric drum set for example. Use the following example as a guide: Volts x Amps = Watts or 110V x 1.5 A = 165W.

2/ Order new copies of marriage, divorce and birth certificates and get them Apostilled. An Apostille or authentication is a state certification of the signature of an official who has signed a public document. We went to the SC capital Columbia with our passports to get them done. You will probably need to produce these if you are looking to obtain a work visa in Europe.

3/ You will need to register with the local municipality when you get there. Make sure your hotel, Air B&B or wherever you are staying, allows you to use the temporary address for registration.

4/ Obtain your medical records from your doctor to take with you and if you are on any medication, ask the doctor for a 90 day supply to hand carry with you so you won’t run out.

5/ Probably like a lot of Americans’ we have locked I phones that either will not work in Europe or will cost a fortune to keep them working there. We were quoted $10 / day to keep them running in Europe. So we are having to buy new unlocked I Phones and an I Pad which is also expensive but our solution was to buy these with credit card points so we didn’t have to spend any cash.

I am starting to get prepared for the big move from the USA to The UPakWeShip Netherlands office. You are probably thinking, oh it must be easy for you seeing you are in the business of international moving. In some ways yes that is true, but probably like many of you, we also have to figure things out ourselves, as we do not have a corporate relocation company helping and advising us.
One of our problems that I am sure many potential people about to move overseas has, is the question of when to ship your stuff! Here in SC the temps will soon be starting to fall from the warm 80’s we are used to, so we will soon be having to ditch t-shirts, flip-flops and shorts for warmer clothing. The problem is we will definitely be needing winter clothing in Holland when we get there. So what do we do?
Like many predicaments, it means going shopping Yes we bought some new winter clothes, somewhat warmer and smarter than we are used to in SC and together with some shirts, shoes and winter coats we have gone ahead and loaded a U Crate 50 well in advance of our departure so it will be there waiting to be delivered when we arrive. This is great as we are traveling to Virginia first on our way out of here to see family and then flying with Sir Richard over to London. Actually to tell you the truth I do not know if he will be on the flight with us but we will be on one of his planes! Once arriving in London, we are getting a train into London and then down to Devon to see more family and UPakWeShip, UK for a few days before flying on one of those cheapo airlines that charge extra for everything to Amsterdam. Therefore, you can see why we did not want to fly with a lot of baggage and apart from anything else, it wouldn’t all fit in a little UK or European car!
So step one, we are shipping some baggage in a U Crate 50 in advance of our International move.
Just as I would recommend to anyone else moving overseas, we are keeping our USA home for the moment and plan to rent it out furnished so we are only shipping personal items to Europe. We are hoping to rent a furnished small house or apartment when we get there. I am thinking one or two U Crate 100’s will probably do it next month when we leave but we will cross that bridge in part two or three!
I will update you with the further adventures on moving to Europe but in the meantime, enjoy the pictures of our U Crate shipping and email me if you have any questions.

Cheers and Happy Packing! “The International Moving Doctor”

What started out as a scary and stressful task (finding a shipper to move our things, alone, with a two year old in tow) is turning out to be surprisingly uncomplicated!

Alicia, our contact person, is a rock star! She seems to understand that even though this her job and she understands that for most of us dealing with moving companies can seem intimidating. She addressed all my worries and answered all of my questions patiently and respectfully. She makes me feel like I am part of a really great team.

The website is very modern and easy to navigate and understand and it is great that everything gets taken care of online and via e-mail. Everything is clear and well documented so that there are no surprises. They tell you step by step what you can expect, and what you need to do in very simple language. We researched the company, looked at videos, read reviews for almost a year before deciding to go for it. I am glad we did. I get the feeling that we have found a company that actually CARES about what they are doing!

Pick up is in a few days and I can’t believe how well everything is going so far! I am actually looking forward to getting on the plane a few days after that knowing that our things are in the hands of competent people who care. I will update the review as the process goes along but if the rest of the process is as half as good as it has been so far I am beyond satisfied! So thankful that we chose UPakWeShip!

How nerve wracking is it to move halfway across the world?! UPakWeShip made it easy! Beforehand they gave us an estimated price, and that was it. No surprises along the way. Alicia gave us a step by step plan, and the paperwork was done before we knew it. We used the door to door service with U-crate 50 from Kansas to Europe. During the shipment we could follow our box with a tracking code.
The communication was great too. Whenever we had a question, they helped us out.
Even the delivery went surprisingly. The driver called us beforehand about the time of arrival, and he helped us unpack the box.
All together, very happy with this service. I would recommend this to everyone!

I was looking at the BBC news this morning and saw this article about moving prisoners to another country. This is not the re birth of Australia or a new island that we could export prisoners to. (By the way, off the subject line a bit here, but did you know England used to ship convicts to America until 1783 when England lost the war and had to find somewhere else to move them overseas.) Some bright spark then suggested “ship em orf” to Australia!
Norway is planning to export some of its prisoners to jails in The Netherlands to ease the overcrowding. They are renting 300 prison spaces from the Dutch who funnily enough already lease some of their space requirements to Belgium!
It looks like there are still some details to be worked out like visitation rights but all in all it looks like this will all be “locked up and a slammer dunk”” shortly. None of the prisoners relocating to Holland will be a security risk. No Norwegian prisoner will be discharged on Dutch soil.
Norway whose population is around 5 Million has an incarceration rate of 72 in every 100,000 people which is about a 10th of the level here in the United States.
I’m not sure if the prisoners will be getting a relocation allowance but if so this whole prisoner moving business could be a new niche for UPakWeShip.
