Know Before You GO
Thinking about Moving Overseas? Here are few tips to help you.
Go and visit the place in advance at least once. Make sure you like their culture, the weather, the people, and check out housing prices, schools if needed, local taxes & cost of living.
Enquire early on about Visa requirements, paperwork needed, can your spouse work? how long does a visa take to obtain? Also check out banks, insurance, health insurance, local social security numbers needed? currency exchange, driving license requirements.
Unless your moving within Australia / New Zealand / United Kingdom or USA start learning the language as soon as possible. You need to know at least the basics like Hello, Yes, No, Thank you, how much, etc before you arrive.
Some important smaller concerns could be what side of the road do they drive on, are most cars manual or automatic? Will your credit cards work? can you transfer your driving record & your credit rating could be affected or not recognised so would you get credit there? Do you need new cell phones? Will your TV and DVD’s work? Whats the voltage? Will your same email account work there?
Have you checked with UPakWeShip to find out the costs of moving your items there?

Posted at 06:56h, 18 AprilHi,
I’ve been looking for this answer for a while. We, a family of four, will be moving from the UK to Canada. With respect to the differences in voltages and plug ins, is it worth shipping our electronics (TVs, stereo, laptop, small kitchen appliances, etc) and buying converters and transformers? Or is it better to just sell what we can and buy everything new when we get out there?
Thank you, in advance.

Posted at 14:12h, 21 AprilHello Diana, to be honest I say its not worth shipping ( Don’t tell my boss that I just said that!)
Yes you can buy transformers but sooner or later you are going to get fed up with having these heavy little boxes around the house. You are not going to want them in the kitchen tops for your toaster etc and don’t want to be lugging the transformer around the house with your Hoover either!
I suggest though if you have a DVD collection and you don’t have a multi system TV it might be worth shipping your TV & DVD player and using a transformer so you can still watch your UK collection of Faulty Towers and Downton Abbey etc rather than having to rent or buy them all again. It wont work with Canadian TV but you could hook it up in a spare room when you want to watch some Brit stuff!
Hope that helps, cheers and Happy Packing, The Moving Doctor,
