    Hello, Doc,

I’m an American who was moved here to Gisborne, New Zealand 2 1/2 years ago by UPakWeShip. Now ready for return to Oakland CA, possibly moving finally to central New York. No rush for contents — just books, clothing, personal effects — around 50 average boxes. Also, musical instruments, amps.

So: need approx rate (cubic feet if poss), time to Oakland. Can stuff be picked up, or delivered by me to ship in Gisborne, New Zealand? Also need terminal holding rates in Oakland; wondering if there is a cost difference between shipping/storing/forwarding in Oakland versus Los Angeles.

Not sure re ultimate destination (though more likely SF Bay Area than LA); probably elsewhere. Will probably know prior to shipment arriving in USA. Need shipment to be started (i.e., current house emptied) by September 26. Can this be done? Please advise, thanks.

We will be closing down our house in Italy and will do all of the packing ourselves and would need a company to arrive at the front of the house with a container to load all of the packed boxes into the container. We will also have quite a bit of furniture, some of it very delicate and antique and need adequate packing for several of those items.
We would then like the container to take our household goods from Italy to Lake Mary, Florida and again unload them in our home.
Does your company provide these services and what would be the approximate cost?

    Hi Mark,

I write to ask about shipping 8 dining chairs, a 3. Pod table, a medium sized 7 drawer silverware standing chest, and 2 framed pictures from Shannon, IE to Baltimore, MD. The antiques dealer from who I bought them estimated $1500 in shipping costs(which is why I bought them). Now the shipper just sent me a bill for 3964.94 Euro to ship just to the local airport in PA. The items are already crated and ready to go. I understand I will have to pay shipper nmber one for crating, but I need need to get these items here without being slaughtered. I am afraid I am going to hate my furniture every time I look at it and remember that I got taken for a ride…..

    Thanks so much,

    Hi Mark,

I am moving to London from San Francisco. Currently everything i want to move is in a storage unit in San Francisco and everything is in boxes (though i may need to tape and wrap them more for extra security). I have three guitars that are not wrapped and an amp that is also not wrapped. I was hoping to get a door to door service (my door being the storage facility) but wasn’t sure what kid to get. My budget isn’t too big and the stuff i want to move isn’t that much so i wasn’t sure if doing the crate you fill yourself was a good idea or even possible to do at a location that is not a home. My thoughts were that the Upak van would simply pull up to the storage unit location and i would load it up with my boxes and guitars, but i since i’m not sure exactly how they are shipped what would you recommend i wrap the guitars in, i dont have hard cases for them unfortunately. Thanks for your time and suggestions are welcome!

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 19:54h, 03 September Reply

Hello Adolfo, as you don’t have hard cases for the guitars I suggest the U Box service so you have some protection for them. Wrap the amp and guitars in plenty of bubble wrap and then cardboard if you can. If the self store allows we could send the U Box direct to the self store and you could load it up and then we can collect it from a ground floor hard surface. We would then ship it through to the destination in London like that. Price for the U Box Crate door to door all inclusive is $1109.00 I hope this helps, call or email me if you need further advice, cheers Mark.

Posted at 11:13h, 05 September Reply

if i pack the guitars in large boxes and go with the baggage box rate for up to 30 cubic feet avoid having the Ubox service, would the cost come down to 654$ + 125$ (for pick up)?

        • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:08h, 06 September Reply

Hello Adolfo, yes that is correct although you will not have the same protection around your things that a U Box gives you but its definitely a cheaper method! Hope that’s good for you, Cheers The Moving Doc

Hi Mark, I’m looking at moving a short wheelbase Land-Rover, and household goods, furniture etc, from Leeds U.K. to The Woodlands, TX, (just north of Houston), in October. My measurements suggest all will fit in a 20′ shipping container.
Can you do this, door to door delivery? I’d need someone to handle customs clearances, because I haven’t got a clue.

The LandRover is a historic vehicle, over 25 years, and I’m told is exempt from import duties.

We have some of it stored in Houston, Texas (where we’re from) and some of it stored in Milford, NH (where we were living before coming to Ireland). Would it be cheaper to bring the stuff from Houston to NH and ship from NH (or maybe Boston) to Ireland OR bring the stuff from NH to Houston and ship from Houston (where there is a big port) to Ireland? In other words, is it cheaper to ship out of Houston or NH? The contents are approximately a 3 – 4 bedroom house with nothing out of the ordinary. Hello Deborah, sorry to hear about your Mom. The best most inexpensive way of shipping this will be to wrap it up well in bubble wrap and then cover it in cardboard, tape up well with duct tape and check it in with you when you fly back. Yes they will charge you excess baggage for this but that should be cheaper than shipping it separate. Check with the airline though in advance to see what they would charge. If its more than $500 let me know and we will re think! Cheers The Moving Dr

Hello Sue, if you can pop it into a bike box that you can normally obtain from any bike shop, we can ship on our baggage service by ship. If you drop off at our terminal in Baltimore we could ship it to door Paris for $810.00 If this is an expensive bike it might be worth it but if not it might be as cheap to buy one in Paris. Hi Mark,

We are moving from Oakland, CA to Sydney, Australia. We have become quite fond of our 14′ Queen Memory foam mattress (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=argvFPqvUS4&noredirect=1) and would like to know if its feasible or advisable to move something of this size and weight.

This is the info I got from the mattress people:-
“It isn’t recommended to bend the mattress as it could potentially damage the memory foam. If you do need to roll up the mattress or fold it, the manufacturer suggests flexing it rather than bending (so the surface bends out). If you would like you could try that. I’m sure a shipping company would be willing to ship this on a pallet ”

We are estimating that our move will have the following:-

    20 medium cardboard boxes
    3 medium plastic tubs
    5 suitcases

Any advice how we can combine the boxes with the mattress?

    Thanks,

    Dina

Hello Dina, we can make available a 200 cube crate called a lift van for you at our terminal in Oakland. We can do this for the same price as the 150 cube crate. The mattress should slide straight into the lift van crate with no problems. I would double wrap it in the plastic mattress bags though.
I will send you an email confirming the price cheers The Moving Doc

    Dear Moving Doctor:
We are looking for help in packing, moving and shipping personal effects from Tel Aviv, Israel to two separate locations: 1) U.S.A. and 2) South Africa. There would be no large furniture – mostly artwork, art pieces, a couple small pieces of furniture, glassware, silver, etc. As all is split between my husband and his brother we would be looking to be a part of a larger container rather than paying for large containers barely full. Can you recommend a company? I realize since the destinations are so distinct we may have to deal with two companies. Thanks for your help.

Hello Debbie, I will pass this on to my colleague Elad Gur-Arie in Israel that we work with. He is very professional and will be able to quote you and help you with this move. Thanks The Moving Dr

Hello Mona, I would suggest you contact Four Winds in Riyadh, our sister company The Euro Group gives them a lot of business and they do a good job. I used to be the manager for Four Winds in Jeddah back in the 80’s mention my name if you like, some might remember me! Thanks Mark Nash

    Hi Moving Doctor,
I am looking for a quote to move a 2 Bedroom apartment from San Francisco to Zurich. How much would it cost and what are my moving options? Could I also get a quote if I only moved the equivalent of a 1 bedroom?

    Much Thanks,
    Steven

Hello Steven, I can send you some service and pricing options for part loads and also a self loading shipping container service. My advise though is either take just boxes and small furniture and use the U Box or U Crate or if you have larger furniture that you want to take use a 20 foot container and ship everything in it as its a lump sum price. Will send you quotes on both, cheers The Moving Dr

I am using Economove to ship my things from Japan to Seattle. I heard that when you are sending things by ship you should get insurance because sailors tend to have sticky fingers. I have been trying to find reviews on the company but I can’t seem to find anything, other then the fact that it is endorsed by many JETs. I am not shipping anything particularly expensive. It is all sentimental value mostly and I don’t want to lose any of it. Have you heard anything about this company? Do you think I should get insurance?

Hello JCK, we have worked with Economove before in Japan and have found them to be trustworthy and professional so I don’t think you would have any problems. BUT I do suggest you take out insurance for peace of mind. You wouldn’t drive a car around without insurance would you? so don’t suggest you leave your personal belongings to travel half way around the world without it either! Even though things might be sentimental insurance might help soften the blow if everything was lost by allowing you to buy something else nice in its replacement for example. Also Insurance isn’t very expensive, you should be able to get it for about 3% of the value so if you insured all your things for $5,000 the premium is only $150.00 Hope that’s ok, cheers The Moving Dr

    Hi Moving Doctor
I am looking for the cheapest way to ship household items and personal clothing from Vancouver Canada to Sydney Australia (2 seater lounge, tv, stand up lamp, painting, pictures, clothing, small suitcases, backpack and small nik nack items) I have been living away for 5 years but am wondering…is it worth it? I can just take my clothing, Backpack, pictures and leave the rest…if that is the best option then what would be the cheapest way for me to ship those items. Thanks

Hello Tracey, we can certainly give you a quote for this but my personal view is get rid of the furniture and buy other stuff when you arrive and just ship your personal bits & pieces. Your shipping bill will be more like $1000 rather than $2000 which leaves you a nice chunk to buy a new sofa when you get there. We will drop you an email with some pricing options, Cheers The Moving Dr

    Hi Doc,

I’m moving from Cardiff, UK, to Montreal, Canada in a couple months. The biggest items I’d have would be two normal sized bicycles in their boxes (less than 6 feet long), along with the usual clothes, books, and kitchen items which aren’t too large. Any recommendations on shipping companies that wouldn’t cost a fortune? Is there a way to ship them there without knowing where my living address will be?

    Thanks a lot,
    Travis

Hi Travis, we can work out a price for you on this. You can always let us know a delivery address later, Montreal is good enough to start with and getting it shipped. Also to save some money we could probably get you a price from a terminal in Cardiff to terminal in Montreal for you to collect it. We will be in touch on email, cheers The Moving Dr

Hello Mary, shipping out of Italy isn’t cheap so I would look at costs for excess baggage with the airline and taking 1 or 2 extra suitcases with you or if not ask DHL or FedEx for prices. If its more than that then let me know, Cheers The Moving Dr. move@upakweship.com

    Hi Dr ,

I’d love some advice i’m looking to ship two large mirrors back from Paris to Dublin Ireland, do you have any companies you could recommend? I’d appreciate any information you might have !

    Thanks,
    Julie

Hello Julie, well presumably they are valuable or you wouldn’t be wanting to ship them. The safest way though is you finding a reasonably priced crate maker or carpenter that can make you a crate with foam lining that you can place mirrors in. Then you can get prices from trucking companies to move them by truck. We can get you a trucking price if you need as well. I hope that helps and you might think crating is extravagant but not much point shipping them cheap in just moving blankets and someone getting 7 years bad luck! Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr

I want to mail a rather small package to the UK these items are family heirlooms including jewelry. How should I mark the contents? I fear they’ll never make it but I’ve no choice except mail best one to use advice.
    Thanks

I wouldn’t use the mail as there is no track and trace as far as I know. I would use UPS or FedEx where you can insure and track the shipment and get a signature the other end. I wouldn’t suggest saying jewelry anywhere on it as that’s asking for trouble, but declare package something bland that doesn’t cause attention. Personally I would make the trip yourself and hand carry! 🙂 hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr
