Greetings, I’m trying to move at least some of my things, including a bed and small kitchen appliances and pots/pans, from New York to South Africa or Mozambique [whichever is more economical]. Can you suggest a company and/or tell me how much this might cost? Cheers in advance for the assistance.

I am moving home from Bahrain to Dublin in December and need to get about 20 kilos of personal items including 2 pieces of wall art sent home in advance. I am looking for the best way and so far my options seems really expensive (certainly way more than the value of the shipment) i.e. in the region of 500-1000 Euro. Is this normal? Can you advise what my best option would be?
    Thanks a million!

Hello Dairine I would try DHL, they are normally the best in price and reliability in the Middle East, wrap up well in bubble wrap and then put in picture boxes. If DHL doesn’t work for you let me know, cheers The Moving Doc

We will be moving from Hong Kong to UAE. We only want to send our 40″ flat screen TV & a Magic TV Box by sea to UAE. The TV needs a crate to pack I think. How can we find a right relocation company to help us to send only two items?
    Thanks in advance

Hello Phyllis, the trouble is with such a small shipment you might find yourself up against minimum charges but get at least 3 quotes, make sure they are inclusive of everything. I suggest asking either Baltrans, Meta Movers, Four Winds, Crown or Allied Pickfords for a quote, cheers The Moving Doc

My wife and I are moving back to the United States from Toulouse.
We will have several boxes worth of clothes, papers, and household items.
We have different opinion about how many there will be (6 to 12).
She had the idea we might be able to share a pallet with someone.
Anyway, we need to do this as inexpensively as possible.
Any suggestions? Are there certain size boxes that are preferred by shippers?
We will sail from Toulon on December 3rd for the US.
    Any help is greatly appreciated,
    John Fulton

    Mark

I am in need of advice. I am currently living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (West side) and am looking to relocate my family back to England. I am undergoing what seems a painful process of deciding which is best. To sell everything we own here, to send it via air or to send it via freight.

The total size of the goods would fit in a Ford Transit van and the weight (approx) 200KG. The goods are worth in total around 1000 pounds. In your experience which route do you suggest? Also what freight company would be the best to speak to (If freight would be a possibility).

    Thanks in advance

    Best wishes

I live in Toronto, Ontario and I am moving back to Honolulu next month. I am a dual citizen so I can live in both countries. My question is how do I send my stuff back without having to pay an arm and a leg to do it? All I have is about a dozen boxes, no furniture, no car or livestock. What do y’all suggest?
Thanks so much in advance for any and all advice.

Hello Patricia, well as you probably know everything connected to Hawaii is an arm & a leg 🙂 so I can not advise an economical option. There might be a shipping service from Toronto if you call around the big movers like Atlas, Allied, United Van lines but if not its going to have to be trucked over to Vancouver and then shipped out which is going to be expensive. I would also look into UPS or DHL and also excess baggage with your flight as an option. Either way I am afraid its going to be expensive! Good luck and if you find a more economical option let us know, cheers The Moving Doc

    Hi Doc,
I’m going to book a Ubox. I’m living in an appartment (2nd floor, no elevator) and will have to fill the Ubox outside my building just before you’ll come to pick it up (no loading dock available). If the weather is nice, it will work well! However, in case it’s raining, I’m thinking about renting a small truck with a loading ramp (UHAUL): I will prepare the UBOX in the truck to protect it from the rain. When your guys are going to come to pick up teh UBOX, do they have a hand pallet truck I could borrow to move the UBOX outside of my truck? Am I going to be charged for that? Or should I rent myself a hand pallet truck?
    Thanks for your help!

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 17:34h, 18 October Reply

The U Haul idea is good if its raining. Our truck driver will have a straight truck, pallet jack and tail lift so this wont be a problem, in fact the trucks might be able to back up to each other and then it would be easy to wheel it across from one to the other so no extra charges and no problemo! Hi – We have been living in Boston for about 18 months and we’re moving back to Australia. At this stage we are not planning to take large furniture items back with us, but a whole lot of smaller things. We also just had a baby so we have a fair bit of baby stuff (including a foldable pack and play) to take back. We were envisaging using the UBOX, or possibly the shared container. We need the items to be picked up from our place (rather than going to the terminal).
    My questions:
    a) We live in a high rise apartment here in Boston. I looked at the youtube video for the ubox. It looks like it will fit in the door when it’s not made up, but when it’s made up and full, we won’t be able to get it out of the door and I’m not 100% sure if it would fit in the elevator either. Have you faced this situation before and what do you do about it? (do you know if the ubox made up, fits in an average apartment elevator? Do we just pack it outside our apartment door at the last minute??)
    b) With the shared container option, can we have many boxes just ready to go and someone can come and pick them all up for us? we don’t need to pelletize the boxes together, we just have them all prepared individually with labelling etc and then the quote I receive online (picking ‘door to door’) is inclusive of someone coming to pick all the individual boxes up? is there a weight limit to a single box?
    c) I’m probably not looking in the right place but on the website I couldn’t find how long it takes on average for it to arrive in Melbourne to my door.

Thanks for your help – much appreciated (sorry if this is not the forum for these specific questions – if it’s not, let me know where to direct them to)

HELLO KATHRYN IF YOU HAVE ITEMS LIKE FOLDABLE PACK N PLAY, DIAPER CHANGING TABLE, HIGH CHAIR ETC THEN A U BOX WOULD BE YOUR BEST BET
      My questions:
      a) We live in a high rise apartment here in Boston. I looked at the youtube video for the ubox. It looks like it will fit in the door when it’s not made up, YES CORRECT but when it’s made up and full, we won’t be able to get it out of the door YES CORRECT and I’m not 100% sure if it would fit in the elevator either. PROBABLY NOT Have you faced this situation before YES and what do you do about it? PLAY WITH IT, PRACTICE LOADING IT IN YOUR APPARTMENT SO YOU KNOW IN ADVANCE WHERE EVERYTHING GOES TO MAXIMISE USAGE THEN ON THE COLLECTION DAY TAKE THE U BOX FLAT PACKED AGAIN DOWN STAIRS AND LOAD IT DOWN THERE FOR THE TAIL LIFT TRUCK TO COLLECT. WE OFFER A 2 HOUR COLLECTION WINDOW FOR AN EXTRA $75 WHICH MEANS YOU WONT HAVE TO WAIT AROUND ALL DAY FOR THE TRUCK TO SHOW UP SO YOU COULD BOOK FOR EXAMPLE 12 NOON TO 2PM FOR COLLECTION (do you know if the ubox made up, fits in an average apartment elevator NO? Do we just pack it outside our apartment door at the last minute??) YES
      b) With the shared container option, can we have many boxes just ready to go and someone can come and pick them all up for us? YES FROM THE GROUND FLOOR SO AGAIN OUTSIDE THE APPRTMENT BLOCK OR FROM RECEPTION AREA is there a weight limit to a single box? NO BUT THE DRIVER NEEDS TO BE ABLE TO PICK THEM UP SO AS A RULE OF THUMB YOU NEED TO BE ABLE TO PICK THEM UP ( AND I AM HOPING YOUR NOT A RUSSIAN WEIGHT LIFTER! LOL)
      c) I’m probably not looking in the right place but on the website I couldn’t find how long it takes on average for it to arrive in Melbourne to my door. I WOULD BUDGET 10-12 WEEKS DOOR TO DOOR

    To Whom It May Concern

I am moving to the UK from Cape Town, South Africa and am faced with a decision whether to sell everything I own or to pack some of the essentials and send it over to the UK. Items such as TV, books, linen, some clothes and shoes, maybe a few pots and pans and things like that – No furniture. I would say that a 1.2m x 1.2m crate would be out the right size for it all. Can you give me some information on this? I am really clueless. Thank you 🙂

Hi. I’m a Canadian currently living in London. I’ll be returning to Canada in April of next year for 8 months to a year and then returning to Europe, but Berlin, not London. I have a number of items that I want to hang on to – 2 cubic meters at the most – but I won’t need them in Canada so I plan to put them in storage. the most practical thing seems to me to ship the items to Berlin and store them there until I arrive and find accommodation. Is this possible; I won’t have a Berlin address until after I arrive – I’m a British/EU citizen in addition to Canadian. P S – Alternatively, I could store the Items in the UK and then arrange to have them shipped to my Berlin address when I’m settled, but I’m assuming, perhaps wrongly, that storage costs will be lower in Germany.

Hi Alex, I think it might be worth speaking to our London office about your various options but off the bat I would think you are better storing in England until you find a place in Germany. Hi Mark,

My husband is from Italy and we currently live in Canada. We are looking at moving to Italy next year via a 6 month stint in Africa (long story). We need to decide soon what to do with all of our stuff, sell it all and start from scratch (we are not terribly attached to most of our stuff) pack it all into storage and then ship via container (this appeals to us merely because we would like to ship our quads and some big items we couldn’t replace over there) or just pack the nearest and dearest into a crate or two for shipping after we return from Africa. We are half hour outside of Saskatoon, SK Canada and will be moving about 2.5 hours from Genoa. How we can we get a price estimate on container versus crate shipping?

    Hello,

I’m looking to ship an antique armoir (average sized, large mirroed door and breaks down into three pieces), an antique dining table, and baby furniture (crib, etc.) from New York City to Granada, Spain. Can you help with an estimate or a recommendation of an insured and reputable company?

    thanks,

    Thomas Colón

Hello Thomas, these things will all need professional packing and crating. We can give you a price for this as well as get at least 2 other quotes. Continum is good in the area as well as Diversified Transport. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr

what is the cost for a partial container from New York City to Salerno or Naples Italy? How big is a container? How long does it take… I will drop off in NYC and pick up in southern Italy—prefer Salerno if possible.
    Thanks

Hello!! I refinish furniture and have an Etsy business. Currently I only do local pick up or delivery but someone has purchased a chair from me in London! What is the best (cheapest) way to try to get her this chair? (It’s a dining chair with a high back, approx 51″ tall, 20’wide and deep. About 10 lbs.)

    Thank you so much!!!

    Heather

Hello Heather, if you can have this chair all packed, wrapped and in a box on a pallet and deliver to our terminal in Garden Grove, we could ship to door in London for $529. You customer will have to pay duties and taxes on the CIF value of about 25-30% of its value. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doc

    Hi Moving Doc!
I have roughly 10 cubic meters of household goods to move from Incheon, South Korea to Surrey. I will need these items boxed and crated. I plan to move to the UK arriving in May of 2014 but would like to ship prior to my arrival to hopefully time it out nicely! I do NOT have a residential address in the UK yet. So I am asking for a cost estimate, shipping time (Incheon to Surrey), and can I leave stuff (if necessary) in port until I find a home?
    Thanks

I am looking to purchase an expensive antique clock in the Netherlands and have it shipped to my home in Houston, Texas. Will I get charged taxes on this purchase?

Hello Pamela, I suggest packing up well in bubble wrap and then putting it in a cardboard box and shipping it via UPS, FedEx or DHL. Yes you will pay duties and taxes but its a lot less complicated than shipping it cargo and will work out cheaper in the end. Depending on the value you might not even get charged via courier. Hello, I am moving from NJ, US to Abu Dhabi, UAE. What is the most cost-effective way to get my personal clothing moved? Or, should I just pay extra bag fees on the airline? Also, eventually I want to ship my auto over as well. I have heard that it cannot be shipped if not paid for?

Posted at 18:32h, 14 October Reply

We can ship just your personal things over in a U Box or U Crate or if you want to ship your car as well we can ship it all in a 20 foot container for you. I am thinking you mean can it be shipped if you have outstanding finance on it so its under a lien? This depends on the finance company, you would have to ask them what their policy is. I’ll get Chris in our office to contact you and quote, cheers The Moving Dr

Hello Jennifer, if you need the moving company to load and unload then you wont get much of a discount I’m afraid compared with doing the loading and unloading yourself with friends. The reason is they still have to send a crew to your residence to load and unload so your only saving on the packing materials rather than the labor! Your shipment is a 40 foot container load so I don’t think you will be able to get one month free storage either as the container has to be returned to the port within 4-5 days after arriving at the port in Bremerhaven or Hamburg. I suggest getting a few quoted from companies like Crown, Allied Pickfords, Sir Moving and AGS / Four Winds but fear all will be quoting you higher than 5000 Euros, good luck though, Cheers The Moving Doc
