Hi, how do I get one heirloom wooden coffee table over from Sydney/Normanhurst to Europe, Austria? What companies do I ask for quotes, pickup and packaging service included? Thanks!

    Hello Mark,

We are moving from Los Angeles to Edinburgh, UK and we need a company that can store our shipment for us at a reasonable price while we get settled. We are thinking we may need three or four months before we need our stuff. Any ideas who can help us?

    Thanks in advance.

Hello Sam, we can move you across and also store your things. We can store both ends but suggest you store either with us in England or a self store near where you are going to live. That way the items are already in the Country when you find a place so you will get them quicker and if you have a self store near where you live you can pop in anytime to get some bits out that you might need. Cheers and Happy Thanksgiving. Peter in our office will email you to offer our services.

    G’day/Hi mark,
Can you help please. We are moving personal effects in a 20ft container from the port of fremantle perth oz to the port of southampton uk. The container is due to be loaded(can you recommend an insurance co) in a few days. We used a shipping agent here called ice (who have been very good) and I believe the the shipping company is oocl. The issue I have is when the container docks in southampton. Its upto us to deal with customs and landside charges and the removal of the items. stupidly I thought I could turn up at the port after customs clearence and load my effects onto a removal truck and be away. Apparently this is not the case. Would the shipping company at a cost move the container to a warehouse to be unloaded or a commercial address. I see phrases like demuridge etc and its all getting a bit confusing. can you guide me through the proceedure of what I need to do when the shipment docks. will customs be the first to contact me ?

    Many thanks

Hello Eliot, yes for security reasons you are not allowed into the port. You will have to arrange Customs Clearance which you can do yourself at Southampton or a customs broker can do this for you. You will need to complete a Customs Form C3 (available on our web site for download under customs forms) once customs cleared you can then pay a company to truck the container out of the port. It can be trucked anywhere so yes a local warehouse of your choice, self store or best would be your residence. You will have 3-5 days depending on the shipping agreement Ice had to get the container cleared, out of port and then taken back to port empty before demurrage starts or container rental.
First stop will be OOCL’s agent to collect Delivery order and pay the port charges
Next take that and C3 and a complete packing list of items in container to customs and submit to an office.
Wait around a few hours hope it will clear same day.
Then have a trucking company or may be OOCL agent can arrange to truck container out (normally takes at least 24 hours notice.
Or if you want we can do the whole thing? if so email chris@the-eurogroup.com or call 0208 530 1441 Chris Smith
Re insurance, ask your Home Insurer if they can handle or may be Ice can help? We do it but cant as we are not doing the actual job. Really insurance is meant to be in place before container departs.
Hope this helps, good luck, cheers The Moving Doc

I’m in San Diego, in Mira Mesa, 92126. I think the U boxes may be the way for me to go or the U pod. Can you tell me where the nearest outlet is that I can go and pick up the U boxes or the U pod. I have a Ford econoline van so no problem picking up. Will probably require pick up from the house once packed though.
    Thanks,

Hello Rod, we ship the U Boxes out to your residence from our HQ in Charleston SC, they come to you flat packed via UPS
The U Crate also comes from Charleston and the U Pod from CT. Both of these can be trucked to our terminal in San Diego in about 7 days for you to load up at the terminal or you can take home and load and bring back to us. Any other questions let me know, cheers The Moving Doc

I’m confused lol easily happens though lol
So if you have more than 4 boxes we will be the cheapest way but if you are saying you just have 15 kilos then that’s the weight of a suitcase and I suggest you either take on plane with you or ship via UPS or DHL.
If I have this wrong please email me, mark@eurousa.us and I’ll gladly help or call me 1 866 868 6386. Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving

Hello Mark, I have been asked to take over my brother’s business in Australia for a few months while he recovers from surgery. I would have the equivalent of 3-4 large duffle bags I want to ship and avoid the exorbitant cost of doing so by commercial (passenger) air. Hello Mark,

My father just passed away and my mother has to move into something much smaller ASAP (their house is already sold). There is a whole lot of family furniture that we dont want to get rid of (both good quality, old, and sentimental value) but the storage costs in France are just crazy. I am myself relocating to Miami in 6 weeks, but to a rental (where as we own a big house here in Texas, but selling it- so that can’t be an option). As a result, I need to figure out a way to ship all the family furniture to Miami, where it will be kept in storage for at least a year, at which point we should have bought a house we could move it all into.
It is a LOT of costs across the boards, and a lot of stuff to handle at the same time. I havent had the best experience with moves (inter-states, or from canada to the US) so far, and really need advice on how to handle this possible move; companies you would trust most, costs expected etc…. I feel really overwhelmed and would so appreciate your insight!
The move would be from Grenoble (ALPS, about one hour from Lyon and 2 hours from Geneva) to Miami. I dont yet know the volume, but there is a lot of very old (and therefore BIG) pieces, such as dining room set with a huge round table, grand Pa’s clock, double bed etc…all full wood and heavy.
Thank you in advance for any light you could shed !
    Sincerely,

    Juanna
PS: please dont hesitate to send me an email and I will respond with my contact info (i.e cell phone number) if you were so kind to give me a few minutes of your time. Thanks again!

I’m curious to know the legality of under-declaring the value of items on a pro forma invoice shipped internationally to prevent theft if it’s a rare and very expensive item. Also, are there statistics or something that would tell me how common it is? Thank you.

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:30h, 25 November Reply

Hello Emma, I have no idea I am afraid. I would think under declaring expensive items is extremely dangerous as if it is stolen you wouldn’t get the full amount back and if the insurance company got wind of you deliberately under insuring they might not pay the claim. Then there is the Government possibly fining you for mis declaring items values so that you pay less duties and taxes and risking the possibility of confiscation of the items. So all in all not a god idea and have never known about this even happening. Cheers The Moving Doc

Hello Jasmine, you really have 2 options, get it wrapped up de rigged lashed and secured either on a 40ft flat rack container or on its trailer and put on a roll on roll off ship into Southampton. Second option is you sail it across or pay a captain to sail it across but not the best time of year for that! Either way it will be expensive. Hello Mark.
I was an international student in Minneapolis MN, and I am moving back to Athens, Greece.
I need to ship my clothes, books, a laptop and some household goods back home.
I do not have any furniture, however I would like to also ship my massage table, shiatsu mat and massage chair (I was studying massage therapy in MN).
    I’ve got the following questions:
Would suitcases be suitable for packing my clothes?
What would be the best way to pack the books (the are heavy)?
What would be the best way to pack the fragile household goods (e.g. jars)?
Are there any special instructions for the laptop?
Would UPack provide packing services as well? If yes, at what cost?
How long does it normally take for my belongings to arrive?
Is there an estimate of the total cost (just ballpark)?
What are the payment methods you use?
I am thanking you in advance. Have a great day.

Hello Lydia, see answers below, anything else let us know, cheers The Moving Doc
Would suitcases be suitable for packing my clothes? Yes but boxes stack better on a pallet than suitcases
What would be the best way to pack the books (the are heavy)? You can buy book boxes normally about 1.5 cubic feet from any self storage shop or U Haul place
What would be the best way to pack the fragile household goods (e.g. jars)? Use lots of bubble wrap covering the item, tape up and place in this cardboard box, preferable one designed for glass & chine. Pad bottom and top with a cushipn, bedding, towels or crushed up paper n bubble wrap to give it protection.
Are there any special instructions for the laptop? Put in original box or wrap well in bubble wrap and place in box or take with you on plane
Would UPack provide packing services as well? If yes, at what cost? We can normally provide packing at $3-$4 per cubic foot
How long does it normally take for my belongings to arrive? 5-7 weeks
Is there an estimate of the total cost (just ballpark)? Chris can answer that for you, he will email you,
What are the payment methods you use? Checks, bank bill pay or credit cards
      cheers The Moving Doc

I am moving approximately 14cbm from Prague Czech republic to West Newbury MA USA 01985.

I have quotes that are for full door to door service including packing, unpacking and all paperwork/customs needs.

I have no way a judging whether or not the prices are ‘good’ or not as each company is quoting
for different cbm s … example:

company a 5cbm, or 10 cbm or a 20 ft. container avg. cost of $598/cbm
company b 6bm or 8 cbm or 20 ft. container avg. cost of $424/cbm

It appears to be quite a difference in cost for the same service.

Are these good prices from reputable companies?

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Hello Matthew, you need to ask them all to quote the same way and on the same volume. Suggest you either pick a volume and then get them all to quote on a rate per cubic meter and tell them you need all inclusive if possible or ask them to quote you a lump sum price for a 20 foot container door to door. $424/ cbm sounds good, $598 sounds high! I don’t know who you are getting prices from but AGS, Corstens, Interdean and Voerman are all good quality down there. Cheers The Moving Doc

Hi Claudia, I suggest packing well in bubble wrap and putting in a box or hard suitcase and taking with you on the plane. If you ship them you might end up paying extra taxes and the costs will be expensive for shipping just 3 bags. Cheers and Congratulations on getting married!

    Hi,
Im trying to find a company that would transfer my two bags around 40kg in total from abu dhani to mexico.i was thinking about the sea freight cause im not in a hurry and I heard thay air freight is way more expensive. Would you be able to give any advice on this one? Thank you in advance.

Hello Daria, I suggest using DHL or UPS from Abu Dhabi to Mexico or take with you in an extra suitcase on the plane. The minimums on shipping and the problematic customs at the sea port outweigh costs by Air. Cheers The Moving Doc

I’m interested in using your ubox service from Birmingham, Alabama to Frankfurt, Germany. What kind of time length from pickup to delivery should I expect?

Hello Richard, normal average transit time door to door is 6-7 weeks, hope that is ok for you? Cheers The Moving Doc

That actually works great because it will be a month before I make it to the location. Am I given a specific delivery date once I book the shipment or is it just “sometime” within a range of a week or two?
Also, is there not a weight limit with the Ubox? It appears to just be the space requirement. I have some books/files which are heavy and that seems to be a problem with most of the other shippers. Your product and price seems to beat all the rest.

Hi Richard, we ship it first in a shipping container to our office in England. There we clear it through European Customs. Once customs cleared James in our office over there will call you and arrange a delivery date with you. Then it gets trucked across to Germany and a truck with a tail lift and a pallet jack will deliver it to your curbside / driveway or garage. Correct no weight limit providing you load with your personal bits n pieces and don’t load up with gold bars lol As long as it isn’t all books n file eg you mix that with clothes, bedding etc etc all will be good. Yes correct our product does beat all the rest! 🙂 CHEERS the Moving Doc

    Hello,
My family are currently in the process of moving to Spain. They have hired a removal van but we are unsure whether there are any rules on packaging food? Or if only certain foods can be taken? The move is happening in just over a week so your help would be very much appreciated!

    Thankyou!

Posted at 18:45h, 20 November Reply

Hello Danielle, well I presume as you have hired a moving van and are driving that you must be coming from somewhere in Europe! If that is the case there are no Customs borders any more so you should be fine as far as I am aware to take food stuff from one European country to another for your personal consumption. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doc

Hello we could but it would need to be crated and if its a tempurpedic needs to lay flat to be shipped. Either way you would be looking at least $1500 plus duties and taxes in Japan so not sure it would be worth it? Cheers The Moving Doc

Hey Mark, so I’m getting married in USA and will be moving to Peru shortly after, I would like to accept beautiful wedding gifts and bring them with us, but not sure how that would work with taxes and how much it would cost to get furniture down there? Any help would be much appreciated!! Thank you.

Posted at 18:58h, 20 November Reply

Hello Annie, congratulations! I suggest not asking for any furniture items and make your wedding list smaller in volume (not price 🙂 and take with you as excess luggage on the plane. If this isn’t feasible use post office or UPS / FedEx. Any other means will definitely be expensive plus duties and taxes. Cheers and look forward to my invite 🙂 The Moving Doc

Hello Natalie, there are many shipping companies in Thailand your relative can use. The best would be for them to ask recommendations from other expats in the area. Failing that I suggest Boonma Moving email tiddy@boonma.com or Seabra gene@seabramovers.co.th both of them know Mark Nash and should give you good service and prices, cheers The Moving Doc

Hi Mark, I am en exchange student in France at the moment. I need to ship about 15-20 kg to Brisbane/Australia. I am looking for cheapest company that I can do this with ? Being a student, I haven’t exactly got money coming out of my ears … The time it takes to get to the destination is no problem, as long as it isn’t anymore than 2 or 3 months.
    Thanks heaps !

Hello Beth, if you have only 15-20 kgs you are better sending via the post office or may be DHL or UPS. Shipping with companies like us would be too expensive compared with the post office or couriers. We become competitive normally when over 4 boxes / 200 lbs. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doc

Hi! I am moving from Portland, OR to Gisborne, New Zealand. I am planning to move personal things/household items and maybe a bike or two. What would be my options for minimal things and no furniture? Especially if I am only allowed to check one bag on the plane, which will probably be a bike.

i have a crate that contains a toy chest and various personal affects/household goods and clothing – all new, some with tags and/or in original packaging others not (as to save space in trunk). i am a legal mexican resident, u.s. citizen, paperwork in process and currently awaiting my permanent residency. both my husband and daughter are mexican. the crate is coming from my parents in the states and also contains some toys as holiday gifts for my daughter. we tried shipping dhl but ran into HUGE problems with customs in mexico city (resulting in it being returned to the states) because there were some vitamins and used clothing in the crate – both have since been removed. what is the best way to get this down to me? when i drove down here from the states my truck was literally filled to capacity with my personal belongings and i never had a problem or question from anyone at any border crossing….thank you in advance for your help!

Hello I am not sure but suggest Googling movers in HK and check references. If this is new from a store then the store will quote you for shipping. Philippine shipping companies as you probably know are also set up around the world to assist Philippine expats to send things home called Balikbayan. Hope this helps, cheers The Moving Doc

    Hello,
I am having problems with Brytor International shipping. They did a quote based on all the belongings in my house, when I said I wasn’t shipping everything they said they would adjust the quote accordingly. Since then it has been a nightmare with the same bill sent to me. I reduced my load from 1400 cubic feet to 1000, but only saved a few hundred dollars. They claim they don’t quote by volume and they have fixed costs.
They also put all my winter clothes into storage, when they didn’t show up I was told to send in an insurance claim. I checked with the insurance company and they said they needed to check the warehouse, I finally got the VP involved and my families ski and winter clothes were there. They are claiming I marked them for storage, despite the fact that I have one shoe shipped from the boxes of clothes here and one in storage. All those boxes were together. They also refuses to send my list of goods in storage until after I had received my belongings were it has numerous boxes of linens on the list. I would have immediately flagged it. Who puts clothing into long term storage. What can I do about this? Is there a process to deal with this . And I assume most companies quote by volume?
    Thanks in advance.
    Deb

Hello Deborah, I am sorry you are not happy with the services of Brytor. They are normally very professional and have a good name as far as I am aware. I can not really get involved or tell whos right or wrong etc but if you think you have a legitimate case that you have been badly treated or services were not as they should have been I suggest you contact their governing body called Canadian Association of Movers info as follows:
