Can you just give me some ballpark figure of what it should cost to move contents of a two-bedroom house from Toronto to NYC? I can’t get anyone to respond to repeated requests online and I need to have a conversation about this in the morning.
I won’t hold you or anyone else to the quote; just looking for a ballpark!

Hello Carol, sorry your not having much success. We don’t handle Canada to USA as its covered more by the domestic movers. If you need a full service mover I suggest getting quotes from the big names like Allied, Atlas and United. If you are looking more for a self pack and load try ABF, Pods, R&L carriers, U Haul. Sorry cant give you ballparks, hope that helps, all names can be found on Google, cheers The Moving Doc

My daughter is in the village of Nedumkandam, in the state of Kerala in Southern India teaching . I have personal items that she needs like hair care produces, alcohol, Q-tips, skin oils, etc. The box I am shipping is 15″ x 15″ x 13.5″ and weights 25 pds. I am moving from Taiwan to Canada in August. Are there any shipping companies that you know of that I can use to send a few larger items, like a crib, dresser, rocking chair and some boxes. I’m not sure how much stuff I will be sending back, I just need an idea of pricing to see if it would be worth it. Thanks!

Hello Michael, I would ask some of the big freight forwarders for a price like DB Shenkers, Lynden, CH Robinson, SwiftAir or Pilot Airfreight to get prices. If all else fails try UPS and DHL for prices as well. I think its a bit too small for movers to give you competitive pricing, cheers The Moving Doc

Hello. I just moved from New York (US) to Vancouver (Canada). I will be in New York for the holidays from Dec. 22 – the 25th, and was planning on shipping 8 or 9 boxes of my personal items, including jewelry, from NY to Vancouver. Is there a way to do this where all I have to do is write the address and return address on the box and have a shipping service come pick up the boxes and send them off to my new address in Vancouver?

    Hello,
we are moving from Wellington, New Zealand, to the south of Tuscany in Italy in early February 2014. We would like to take some items of furniture with us. We have:
    1 double bed
    1 dining table, regular size
    5 dining chairs
    2 armchairs
2 bookshelves, about 5 feet high, disassemblable
2 bookshelves, about the same size, not disassemblable
household items: kitchenware, clothes, toys etc
Can you please advise on reliable and economic ways to move these things to Italy? If we can ship to Civitavecchia or Livorno, we can probably arrange to collect our things straight from the port, if that will reduce cost.
We would also like to take our pets with us: a small dog and a cat. Can you suggest the best way to do that, as well?
    Thanks,
    Richard

    Dear Moving Doctor,
I have not read all the comments below but as far as I have read, you have been super helpful and I’m glad I came across this website.
My wife and I have moved back to her home country, Faroe Islands, with most of our household items back in Los Angeles (or to be exact, Pasadena). I’m exploring ways to bring these items here via shipping container. We don’t want to sell them and buy new things because some, we have collected over the years and other things are much more expensive to buy where we live. I don’t think it will take much space in a container and I can’t tell you exactly all the measurements but here are some items to give you a clue how much space it will take

king size bed frame (disassembled) and foam mattress
two sofas made out of steel frame (so not so bulky or too heavy)
kitchen items: plates, cups, glasses, kitchenware such as food processor, crockpot, etc
    clothes
baby items such as stroller, crib (obviously disassembled)

There’s not too much stuff really. We can be flexible and have the items be shipped to Denmark and we can pick them up ourselves. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi there,
My husband, son and I are moving from Saskatoon, SK to Palo Alto, CA for one year. We currently live in a 1,400 sq foot 3 bedroom home. We are debating whether it’s a good idea to rent a truck and move almost everything down (it sounds expensive) or if we should use some type of pod that will be transferred without the time and expense of driving down and purge and/or store some of our things here. We are leaning more towards bringing a smaller amount of things down and buying cheap items from ikea once we move and only bringing things like lots of clothes, some toys, tv’s (1 large and 1 small), computers (large apple computer and laptop), books (heavy university texts), kitchen supplies and a few other toddler related things. If we used a pod system would we be able to send things like a tv or a computer? Would they be safe or prone to damage? What’s the best way to deal with them. Also, we are all flying down and not bringing a vehicle so we can’t bring them that way. Please advice me what’s the best moving company to go with and which move plan you think is the smartest option. Thank you in advance!!!!!

Hello Krista, we do not offer this service route but I will be passing this over to my good friend Kirsten up there to contact you and advise. I would also check out a price from Pods. They would be fine moving all your things including the TV. The trick is how well you pack it though. If you use plenty of bubble wrap, buy proper boxes for the TV, Pictures etc wrap furniture well in moving blankets, load tight so nothing can move around, you should be fine. Cheers The Moving Doc

I thought of shipping it to my wife in Georgia, USA. But most movers mentioned that she needs to have resided in Canada to be able to receive them or the US Border and Customs wont permit the goods through. Unfortunately, she has never been to Canada. Can you suggest an alternative?

Hi, I ordered some glass panels from China , they quoted Shipping to Brisbane sea freight cost 300 usd (if telex release bill of loading),350 usd( if Original bill of lading ) what does this mean, and what other costs will I need to pay at the Port of Brisbane goods are worth $1700 any information would be much appreciated Thanks.

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:02h, 13 December Reply

Hello Ian, if you pay them before shipping you will get a release bill of lading meaning its released for you to collect it the other end. If its on original it means you will have to get a copy of the original once you have paid for it and then take the original to the shipping agent in Brisbane to prove its yours and then collect it. Its much smoother if you get a release bill of lading.
Once it gets to Brisbane you will have to pay whats called THC (terminal handling charges) which is the costs of unloading and warehousing ready for you to collect. You will also have to clear it through customs and pay AQIS inspection charges as well as duties and taxes on the item. Find out what shipping agent the Chinese are using, ask them for the local agent nbr in Brisbane then call or visit to find out local charges. I would budget at least $300-$500 by the time you have finished paying out and collecting it! Cheers The Moving Doc

I’m considering shipping my Baldwin Concert Vertical piano from Denver, CO, to San Miguel de Allende in Mexico. How should I go about this? Many people say I should sell my piano here and buy another in Mexico. But I love this piano and will probably not find a comparable one there that I can afford, so I’m reluctant to let it go. It seems that no mover will go the whole distance. Apparently the piano needs to be shipped to Laredo, TX, and given over to a Mexican shipper who will take it to SMA. Seems complicated. I’m trying to get an estimate of the cost which will probably be the deciding factor.

    Hi Doctor,
I’m moving to Europe in a couple of months but don’t have enough items to justify shipping my own container. I like the concept of the U-Crate and U-Pod, but although on your web it says I can lock a U-Crate myself and keep the key, I read on some other reviews that sometimes items are removed from the U-Crate and U-Pod and loaded as loose items on a delivery truck for the last leg of the trip. Is this right? I would be concern about broken, missing or mishandled items if things are removed by somebody else.

Thanks for your help clarifying this matter,
    Yew.

I’m getting ready to move to Ireland for a year, but I’m using a friend’s buddy pass, so I can only take a carry-on. I don’t need a ton of stuff, but at least a box-full of clothes/books/etc, which will be somewhat heavy. I’ve never really shipped much overseas and am not sure the cheapest way to get it over. It won’t be time-sensitive at all. I’ll take what I need with me and just ship the stuff I won’t need right away. If you have thoughts about the cheapest way–not worrying at all about time for it to get there–that would be great!

    Thanks so much,

    Dimensions are 50in x 20in x 10in

    – an accessories case weighing 60 pounds
    Dimensions are 50in x 24in x 14in

And finally, rack mounted equipment that could go in one or two cases.
Either two 10u racks weighing 120 pounds each.
    Dimensions are 22in x 24in x 24in
Or all in one rackmount case.
If in one case, weight is 230 pounds and
    Dimensions are 22in x 24in x 42

    So, my questions are;
    – does it make sense to break up the rackmount equipment into two cases.

-how much would this cost one way or two way
    – how long would it take for the shipment to arrive in London
    – what would it cost per day to store the stuff if I can’t pick it up for a few days
    Thanks,
    Gabriel Stern

Hi Gabriel, now that sounds exciting, I really wished I had done something like that years ago. Shipping by sea is going to take about 8-10 weeks where as Air freight will be about 10 days. Air is about 4 times the price though! Other thoughts….. you know voltage is different right so is the equipment multi voltage compatible? I suggest you break down the racks into 2 as its easier to pack and load a piece at 120 lbs rather than 240lbs which is very hard to lift! I also suggest you either buy Gig cases to put everything in that you them keep for the return journey or we make you a custom crate to put in everything in that again either you or us store until the return journey. I’ll get Pete in our office here to email you to see if we can help. Oh and btw, you will need a document called a Carnet which you can get from the SFO chamber of Commerce. This needs to be completed and notarized and accompany your shipment so that UK customs do not charge duties on your things as its a temporary import and will be shipped out a few months later. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doc (who is a keyboard player and frustrated un famous rock star lol)

I am considering buying a wall desk listed on line at Corsham, Wiltshire UK.
    H= 143cm W= 85cm D= 45cm
And it is of Indian padouk wood, so it has some weight to it.
The listing agent had several European price options for driver delivery, but gave me a completely high end quote – but they offer pick up from the shop as an option.
Anyway, it would need to come to the USA zip code 58102 which is North Dakota. Could you give me a ball-park idea, the auction ends in about an hour and a half.

    Kind Regards,
    Ross ~

Hi Stephanie, if its one suitcase your better off negotiating with the airline you are flying with to take it or ask DHL for a price to ship it home, cheers The Moving Doc

What are your shipping rates from East Coast, USA, (Boston or NY) to France (as close to Eastern Brittany as possible), for a 20′ container, normal household shipment of furniture, clothes, books, kitchen ware etc, with about $3000 worth of insurance included. Shipment possible date would be within 3 months time?

    Thank you.

Hi, I am planning to move back to the USA from So Africa. Both companies I have contacted claim they must pack everything, even boxes, files, etc. that are already boxed in proper moving boxes. They say it is because of customs inspections. Is this the case or are there companies that will allow me to pack some things myself.

Hello Jay, as long as you pack it well and do a complete packing list then you are allowed to pack it yourself and someone like us can then ship it. I’ll get Chris in our office here to contact you and offer our services, cheers The Moving Doc

Hello Edwina, if its just one suitcase best bet is take it with you on the plane and pay the excess luggage. If not try post office or DHL, cheers The Moving Doc

    Hello,
We are moving from Brussels, Belgium to New York City early next year. I’d like to move a big computer screen, an audio system, three guitars and a few boxes of books. Probably door to door. What do you think the best option would be? How much would it cost? If the price difference isn’t very big I wouldn’t mind adding some furniture to that (one sofa, one table…).

    Thanks,

    Mario

Hello Mario, I’ll get our EU office to contact you and offer you various service options and prices and then you can figure out what’s worth taking, personally I think its often not worth taking big furniture though. cheers The Moving Doc

Dear Sir, We are receiving a shipment of our furniture at the port of Montreal from Italy. It is less than a whole container. Where do I go in the Port of Montreal to find CBSA for customs? When it is cleared, and I just have a moving company come to the port to pick-up the furniture?

    Thanks for your help

Hello Bjorn, you should have a Bill Of Lading that hopefully shown who the local shipping agent is to contact in Montreal if it is to arrival port or terminal in Montreal. I would call them and ask them for a price to clear customs and pay the port charges ready for you to then collect it or if you prefer get a mover to go and collect it and deliver it to you. If however you bill of lading says to door then the local agent should be contacting you to arrange customs clearance and delivery to you. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doc

Do you ship/fly these over door to door & roughly how much as I will be paying from here in London?
