    Hello!
I need to ship a few precious items from Australia (East coast) to Canada (West Coast). The largest is a harmonium, which is also fragile. Also to be shipped are some paintingson canvas, clothing, books, rugs, mirror).
Can you recommend the most economic and safest way to ship these items? Time is not an issue.
    Thank you 🙂

I’m interested to get a quote to ship a car trunk lid from the Rochester, NY terminal to a residence in Honolulu, HI. If it’s not too much trouble, could I get a figure for both the 100 and 150 cu. ft. crates? Thank you, Steve

Hello Steven, we don’t operate a service to Hawaii from the US Mainland. If you Google a company called Pasha they can advise you but be warned its an expensive place to ship to and it will probably be cheaper to buy the trunk lid new in Honolulu, cheers The Moving Doctor

    Hi Mark,
I am a kiwi living in London, and about to move to LA in 6 weeks time. I have purchased a 90 day return ticket under the NZ/USA visa waiver for tourists. However I will actually be getting married after 60 days and will be applying for conditional residency and eventually a green card based on being married my partner who is an american citizen.

I have a few special bits and pieces I would like to move from London to LA – like some small hi end speakers and other things I dont want to throw away, but they are probably too much to attempt to take as extra baggage on my flight to LA. I imagine I could fit it all into 1 large box.

My question that I am confused about is, from what I have read online In order to ship a box of goods from London to LA (probably via sea) I would need to provide a photocopy of my passport showing my VISA for the USA. Obviously I have an ETSA for the USA but not a visa (90 day visa waiver) under I arrive at LAX with a stamp. And that I must also collect it in person.

As I wont have conditional residency till 60+ days after I arrive, Im not sure how I go about shipping my stuff?

Is it an option that I ship it under my fiance’s name instead (even tho she is based in LA) and provide a photocopy of her passport etc instead, and then have her pick up my stuff in LA when it arrives?

Any advice would be much appreciated mate!

Posted at 19:05h, 03 March Reply

Hello Chris, without a valid residency or work visa you can not ship your things to the USA. 90 day tourist visas do not allow you to ship things in as household goods duty and tax free. Your fiancé would only be able to ship them if she was living overseas herself otherwise this will not work. May be store the stuff with a friend until you have a valid visa and then ship it?
Only ways around it would be if you bring in extra suitcases on the plane but you might have some explaining to do if it looks like you are moving over here with just a 90 days visa!
Sorry cant be of more help!
      Cheers The Moving Doc

    Hi,

We are looking to move back to the UK this Summer and have looked at several different moving companies. We received our second quote back this week, and it seemed a bit unreasonable. The moving company estimated our household goods shipment at 3,311 lbs. This seems excessive. If we decide to pare down our belongings to say — 1800 lbs, how much would it cost? Ballpark.
I know it’s going to be expensive no matter who we go with. Who is the best mover for our money?

    Kind regards,
    Dan

Posted at 19:21h, 03 March Reply

Hello Daniel, well hopefully we will be a lot more economical than traditional moving companies. I’ll get Pete to give you some rates and service options. We normally charge a lump sum price for our load your own containers and pods and charge per cubic foot on our shared container services rather than weight. You can measure your shipment in advance and therefore get a fairly accurate estimate of volume before you ship rather than a weight which most people would not know whether you had 2000 or 3000lbs for example.
Anyway I’ll get Pete in our office to contact you and give you some prices and service options and hopefully we will be the best mover for your money!

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 19:25h, 03 March Reply

Hello Ellen, that depends on your circumstances, are you moving your normal residence to China or just shipping the piano? Will the piano be coming back after 6 months? If yes you can probably ship it with a Carnet and get it in duty and tax free if its shipped back here within 6 months! If you would like to give me more information we can advise costs and more information, cheers The Moving Doctor, move@upakweship.com

I’m planning on moving from Denver, Colorado to Sydney and will need to ship boxes with clothes, shoes, some books and pictures. I’m not planning on shipping furniture. What would be my best option?
If you think that getting a 20′ container and packing all the clothes etc plus my bicycle, furniture (some chest of drawers, bookshelves, a desk, no bed or couch) would be better then I’m open to that option, too.

    Hi Mark,

Your site was recommended by the UK Yankee expat blog. We currently live in Oxford, England. We currently found out we’ll be moving to Edinburgh on a permanent basis (we are only in Oxford for 2 years). We left a bunch of our stuff and furniture in a storage facility in California, and now we need to move it to Edinburgh. I am most worried about customs duties. Everything we’ll be shipping is our own used things, but I don’t want to be hit with a major customs duty after spending £2,000+ to move it here. Any advice?
    Thank you,
    Lauren

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:24h, 27 February Reply

Hello Lauren, always great to hear that we were recommended! We really try hard to be the good guys in the moving industry and its always good to hear that its pays off sometimes:-)
So the rules with HM Customs are that you need to be moving your residence from outside of Europe to Europe, have lived overseas for the last 12 months, all your items are more than 6 months old and you are shipping your things over within 6 months of arrival. If this is the case then there will be no duties or VAT and our all inclusive price will be all inclusive as long as we can get a truck to your residence eg normal access to a house.
If as I suspect you have moved from here a while ago and don’t fit into this category then you can write a letter to customs explaining the situation, may be you weren’t sure if you were staying due to job/ illness or something or you were saving up for the shipping? It might work but we cant guarantee this and HM Customs seem to get every penny they can these days and are not very lenient!
If you had to pay duties and taxes it will be a few% of the value for duty and then 20% is added for VAT. The values of the items can be low as its used so say $1000 for a value plus the shipping costs say $1200 and the insurance say $100 = $2300 x duty% + VAT
If you need more clarification email our UK Import manager Karolina at Karolina@the-eurogroup.com or call 01638 515 335 and she can advise you.
I’ll also get Pete in our office here to give you some service options and prices for you to look at.
I hope that helps, cheers Mark

Mark! We are moving from Sacramento, CA to Sydney, Australia end of April and were thinking of packing a few household items plus our bed to save on the costs of repurchasing everything in Sydney. What company would you recommend? Are there PODs that can be shipped to Sydney? Items that we are looking to bring include: kitchen items (basic pots, pans), nespresso machine, bed frame (disassembled), mattress (if possible), small living room table, futon, desk & chair. We are making the assumption that repurchasing those items in Sydney would be very costly.

Best suggestions? What price range should we expect for this type of service? What size container would we need if PODs are not available.

    Thank you.

Crown Relocation, AGS and Santa Fe Relocation all have operations in Jakarta. Anything else let me know. PS Its a good idea to ask around the expat community to see who other expats recommend service and price wise.

How much will it cost to ship a couch, coffee table, and a queen sized bed. Budget truck is is $443 and UHaul is way higher than that. I’m going from Winston Salem, NC to Orlando, FL on March 1st. Would a cargo van be best or what? Thanks!

Hello Ferris, I would think a cargo van would suffice but best check the dimensions of the van against your longest and highest pieces to make sure they fit, ok?

I need to ship a complete drum set from North Carolina to Idaho. I don’t have the weight available but it’s a professional set.

    thanks

If you can pack it in drum or gig cases that would be good but if not use lots of bubble wrap and put in good quality cardboard boxes. I suggest getting quotes from UPS freight, R&L carriers, ABF or YRC trucking. Also look into U Ship. You can find all these companies on Google, cheers The Moving Doc

We are moving from Colorado to SE England May/June this year. I am not sure whether it would be cheaper to ship some of my stuff or just rebuy when I get to UK. Can you give me approx. cost door to door for a 6ft by 6ft (?) crate, or let me know what the size vs cost options are!! Not sure what a CU size is!!
Happy for you to get Chris in the London office to contact me!
    Thanks so much,

I am moving from Dallas, TX to Shanghai. I’ve sold my house and am closing March 7th. Am told I won’t get the OK to ship until August. Can I store my things with you until I get the OK to ship?

Hello Kelley, it would be cheaper if you found a local self store to store all your things in. Then when you are ready to ship get a friend or relative to let us in to collect the things. Hope that helps, if you need more info or rates let me know, cheers The Moving Doctor

    Hello,
I am a UK citizen living in Spain (10 years now) and I have shipped family items (from my mother´s house in the USA) that she gave to me two years ago. These items are paintings, little figurines, tablecloths, … typical inheritance things your parents give you when they need to move to a smaller home (as my mother has done). My shipment is in UK customs and they are saying that I need to pay 5% tax and 20% duty based on value and shipping costs. They say that they are classed as “delayed imports” and therefore liable. It seems terribly unfair that I have to pay tax and duty on what are basically old, used household goods. Please, can you help?
    Thanks so much!
    Kind regards,
    Catherine

Hello Catherine, I agree it is unfair but HM Customs or EU Customs eg in this case Spain don’t let anything go through these days if they can charge you duties and VAT. They are in their right to charge it on the CIF Value and I’m afraid neither the shipping company or you have a leg to stand on. You can try to contact them by phone or email and appeal if you want. The only saving grace is that on the value you declare them at so if its old second hand stuff then presumably its only worth a few dollars therefore the vat and tax wont be much?
Sorry I cant offer more …..

    Hi,
I’m planning to move to Iran(Tehran) from Newcastle Upon Tyne. I haven’t decided on what exactly I’m taking with me. It very much depends on what the prices are offer, but ideally I would like to take as much as I can e.g. Fridge/ freezer, oven, washing machine, beds, sofa plus other bits and pieces for room decoration and stuff. Could you let me know what the difference would be in (price speaking) shipping by container to truck including their size, then that would be great. and also how can I find the best offer?
    Thanks, Joy

Hi, I need to transport a table top (flat, wood) form Los Angeles to Oslo. The dimensions are 84x33x2 in. and it weighs approx. 120-130 pounds. I am in no rush to get it. Can you do it and how much would it be?
    Thanks,

Hello Helene, yes we can but it will probably need to be crated for protection. The crate will costs more but there again if it doesn’t get there in good shape there is no point in shipping it in the first place. We can get it crated for you if you cant arrange that. Chris Corder in our office will be contacting you and advising you on rates and service options, cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi, I’m looking to ship a bed from Birmingham UK to The Hague, The Netherlands.

A half decent new bed in NL costs about 2000 EUR. A similar quality bed in the UK can be had for around 650 EUR, so even if shipping is expensive I’m still winning.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!
