How far in advance do you have to book a U Box?

Also do you know approx. how long it takes to go from Tampa, Florida to England.

    Thank you so much! 🙂

Hello Alexis, we would like a weeks notice to do paperwork and get you the U Box to you. We normally send out U Boxes by UPS ground but if you are in a hurry we can send out on a faster service at a small additional cost. Once we collect the U Box from you door to door transit time is normally about 5-6 weeks. Cheers The Moving Doctor

    Hello,
I am planning to move from France back to the US in the next few months. I would like to bring my deceased mother’s baby grand piano with me. It’s serial no. dates it to 1930 and it has ivory keys. I’ve read that new laws now require CITES documents, including a pre-ban exemption permit in order to avoid US customs confiscating it or ripping off the ivory key tops. Do you know these formalities, where to find these docs, make the application/s etc? I’ve searched but haven’t had any luck so far. Also, will I be able to ship this piano with upakweship? What would be the approx cost? This baby grand is in some need of repair, worth no more than about $1000 but it has great sentimental value and I love playing it. However, if shipping it will be an expensive nightmare, I’ll have to sell it here in France before leaving.
    Thanks very much.

After several international moves, we are finally coming back to the United States. We are being transferred from Mexico City to New York, but our permanent home is in California. My question: Could we pack half of our things for Los Angeles and the other half for New York? Our total amount of things would amount to about half of a shipping container.

    Hello,
I have 4 boxes, 1 boxed picture and 1 snowboard bag for shipping from Edmonton, Canada to Adelaide, Australia.
The 4 boxes are a standard large box in Canada (from Home Depot) measuring 18x18x24inches (4.5cubic feet). The picture is a flat rectangle picture wrapped in a cardboard box. I don’t have exact dimensions but it’s about 50cm by 100cm from memory! The snowboard bag is around 2.5m and has a snowboard and boots in it.
The boxes have household items – clothing, bedding, books and pictures.

Can you tell me the most cost effective way to ship this small of shipment?
    Thanks,

    Hi there,

I’ll be in the UK in June to pack up my late Mum’s house. There’s a few items I want to ship back to my home in Cape Town South Africa.

The items will be a Grandfather Clock (which I’m pretty sure can come apart ie., clock off the stand), a small dining table, a plaster head and shoulders bust and some old hi fi equipment.

Doesn’t matter how long it takes to get them to South Africa.

What would you say was the most economical way of going about this, so I pack them all up and they’re collected from the house in Henley-on-Thames Oxfordshire and delivered to my house in Cape Town?

Greatly appreciate any advice you can offer me? …

    Many thanks,

I am shipping my stuff back to NZ. Part of it includes about 40 cases of pretty good wine. Because of the issue with temperature fluctuation with its journey, I am considering the option of utilizing a reefer container. Do you know of anyone that could handle the logistics behind this?
Does it make sense, or would it just be fine to send it as per normal and try ship outside of the Summer and Winter months.

    Thanks Martin

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 13:35h, 02 April Reply

Hello Martin, as I’m sure you are aware heat in a container can expand corks that will let in oxygen and ruin the wine so if you are willing to pay the price, a reefer container might work for you. However shipping in the spring or fall / autumn if your in EU would probably work just fine too. May be contact a wine importer locally to you and ask their advice? I am no expert on shipping wine, more of an expert just drinking it 🙂 Either way though reefer or standard shipping container we can provide you with the door to door move logistics. We would of course need to know where you are. Cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi I am wanting to move books and personal items from South Africa to Canada. All in all probably under 2 cubic metre squared. I am wondering which is the route to take. I am not sure whether to fly it as excess cargo on the plane or go the route of getting a company to move it as a box. If so I am not sure if and which companies move such a small area as most want them to be 100ft squared. It is the weight of the books that deter me from transporting them via plane as excess baggage or cargo. I am not sure what to do or which route to take. Is there anyway you could advise me, it would certainly be much appreciated.

Once the bed is in Florida we can pick it up from there. If you could provide other information (via link is okay) regarding customs, time, costs (fees, and is the cost based on size or weight or both), the process (how do we drop it off, how will it be sent, etc) and anything else that would be helpful, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hello Joel, your best bet would be to pack it into a mattress carton and ship via a freight forwarder to Miami. Once it gets to Miami you would have to pay port charges and possibly taxes and duties and clear it through customs. I would estimate the shipping, customs, port charges etc would be about $1000 so probably not worth it unless a very special bed!

    Hello,
I’m moving from Alberta, Canada to either NZ or the UK within the next six months or so.

I am looking to move personal effects which amount to a Library, clothes, some Personal effects (ornaments etc) a few wall pictures (5 or 6) and Perhaps an AO size, pedestal mounted, drawing board.

Excluding the drawing board the consignment amounts to about 4,500 litres or about 2000-2500lbs. So far it is packed in Plastic “rubber maid style tote boxes with Operable lids.
Currently I have been quoted $7500 by one relocation firm, others have been struggling to quote saying that its a rather small amount for a moving company, per say, to move.
This been the case, would a consignment of this size be better sent by a delivery service (UPS/ Purolator etc) or would “self shipping work out more economical?

Hello Christine, it will take about 8-9 weeks. You have to unload the container within a couple of days of it clearing customs otherwise you start paying penalties for not returning the container empty so if you are not ready for delivery you are better off finding a self store near where you will be living and unloading the container into a self store. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doctor

    Hi Mark,
I’m planning on moving back from Germany (Cologne) to the US. When I came a couple of years back I had 2 pallets, arranged everything with a company in the US and they shipped it to by boat, arrived in Hamburg and then brought by truck to Cologne. Now I need to do it back – possibly 3 pallets, but don’t speak German well enough to really know what company is best. Any suggestions?

Hi Doctor, I am trying to move some household stuff from one of the USA east coast ports to Ireland. I do not have enough to fill a 20′ container, and I am trying to avoid some of the ridiculous fees they charge in Dublin Port for handling. I am thinking about buying a 16 foot enclosed trailer with all my stuff in it, and wondering if it would be a cost effective way to do it. I could drive the trailer to the least expensive departure port, and have it picked up at Dublin Port. I would then sell the trailer when I get finished with it. Is this a crazy idea, or would it work? Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

Hello Louis, we can quote you through to door in Dublin or anywhere in Ireland and our prices are all inclusive so include all port fees. I believe all trailers that can be shipped on a roll on roll off ship have to be empty so I don’t think your idea will work I’m afraid. I’ll get Pete in our office to email you some all inclusive prices which I think you will find very cost effective! Cheers The Moving Doctor

I want to ship by air my personal items; eg: clothes, kitchen goods (not electrical), almost new desktop PC, bedding & sentimental items, from the USA to the UK, door to door. Nothing is new! I have 15 boxes, medium & large (Home Depot) boxes. Can you tell me a good way to do this, by recommending a suitable company? I would really appreciate your help. This is urgent as we need to have it picked up by March 28!
    Many thanks
    Maureen Pendry

Hello Maureen, we can do that no problem. I’ll get Ken to advise you the air prices and also Pete to quote you by ship as this might get a bit expensive all by airfreight. Either way you can compare the options, cheers The Moving Doctor

I think this route for moving furniture will be expensive. Suggest shipping just your personal items that you pack yourself well in boxes and find a trucking company like ABF to truck them for you. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doctor

    Hi!,

I’m moving from Dammam, Saudi Arabia back to Toronto, Canada. I have about 400 KG’s worth of personal effects. Can you help find the best company and the best method of transport.

    Thanks

    Ali

Hello Ali, from Saudi you should get a good deal on Airfreight. Try an Airfreight broker or the recommended forwarder that Lufthansa / KLM or British Airways suggest. Also you could ask Camel, Four Winds and Kanoo for prices. Best price would be if you dropped off at Dhahran Airport and cleared customs and collected yourself at Toronto. When you arrive yourself at Toronto you must tell customs office you have a shipment of personal effects following you and he will give you a stamped form for this. Cheers The Moving Doctor
