Posted at 19:56h, 08 MayHi,
My family and I are moving from San Diego California to Uppsala Sweden in July.
We plan on taking maybe 20 boxes of books, clothes, small things and toys. No furniture; just boxes. Maybe we will have some things that are too big for a box like a snowboard. We would like to pack ourselves.
What would be the best and economical way to ship these? Shared container? And what would be the cost involved? Paperwork involved?
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:19h, 09 MayHello Lisa, either shared container or U Cube or U Crate would probably be best. I’ll get Pete in our office here to advise more and send you some prices, Cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 06:25h, 06 MayHow can I get 8 packs of laminate flooring collected from Palmview and shipped to Woking, England at a cost effective price
There is no hurry for the goods, so shipping rather than air would obviously be cheaper.
Please advise

Posted at 21:24h, 05 MayHello- I want to enquire about a small shipment. I would have 3 computers in their original boxes, one printer box, 2x 2 cubic foot book boxes, a flat packed A0 picture (piece of studio work that we would pack between two boards), and perhaps a suitcase of clothing. I have no furniture, or large domestic pieces.
Do you think this is too little to consider shipping with you? And do you think you could quote from the above list?
Thanks,
Quentin jones

Posted at 20:34h, 06 MayHello Quentin, we offer baggage services for small shipments like this and are really competitive to most places in the world. I’ll get Pete in our office to drop you an email so we can find out where you are moving from and to and then send you some prices and options, cheers The Moving Doctor.

Posted at 20:37h, 05 MayHi mark. im moving from nyc to amsterdam in four weeks. my question is, i have a some furniture i would like to bring, other than that just some boxes with clothes and loose objects. would it be smarter to leave the furniture and just ship the boxes, is it a big difference in price btwn boxes only or box+ some furniture? its only a table and four chairs thanks a lot man
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 20:38h, 06 MayHello Jonatan, lets send you our rates for box shipping and also our U Cube, U Crate and U Pod options which allow you to pack some furniture as well. You can then see the different prices and figure out if its worth shipping the furniture. My rough rule of thumb though is either send lots of furniture in a self load 20ft (costs about $4,000) or leave it behind and just ship the boxes. I’ll get Pete to email you the prices and options, cheers The Moving Doctor

The Moving Doctor
Posted at 20:41h, 06 MayHello TLA, a lot depends on where from and to as near a shipping port like New York is a lot cheaper than say for example Idaho or Montana. I’ll get my colleague Chris Smith from our London office though to email you some prices when he finds out some more details, cheers Mark

Posted at 15:15h, 05 MayHello! My family and I are moving from Denver, Colorado to Sydney, Australia in June.
We plan on taking 15 boxes of books, clothes, and some glassware. No furniture; just boxes.
What would be the best and economical way to ship these? Shared container? And what would be the cost involved? Paperwork involved? We need to move things mid-May.
Thank you,
Maria.

Posted at 16:16h, 05 MayHello Maria, I would suggest the U Box if everything could fit in it? I will get Pete in our office here to email you some rates and options and explain about the paperwork. Cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 02:00h, 02 MayHi! My family and I are moving from Roanoke, VA to St. Andrews, Scotland. We only plan on taking about 15 boxes of books, a rocking chair, and our clothes. Would you suggest the pod(s) for this? Also, how long does the shipping take? We plan to arrive at the end of August. The books need to get there by mid September. What would be optimal shipping date? Thank you!
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 13:20h, 02 MayHello Jane, what your not taking golf clubs? 🙂 I would think a U Box, (which we are re naming the U Cube) or 100 U Crate would be big enough for you. I will get Pete in our MD office to contact you and email you our latest rates and services. A good way to see what size Pod or Box you need is to measure out the sizes using masking tape and to see if all your things will fit into that area. To be on the safe side I would budget for 6-7 weeks as a door to door transit time. The U Cube, Baggage and 100 U Crate are normally faster delivery times as they get trucked straight to your driveway where as the bigger crates and shared container services get loaded on a moving van and contents get placed in your house. This normally takes longer to arrange and you have to wait for enough shipments going in your direction before delivery is confirmed.
Many thanks The Moving Doctor

Scot Loizeaux
Posted at 00:57h, 01 MayI am moving from Chattanooga, TN to Bogota, Colombia, hoping to get a 20ft container’s worth of household goods door-to-door. I have one quote from a company in NY for $7,850 USD plus $1,100 USD to have them professionally pack all.
I suspect that this is a somewhat inflated price but am not sure. As I am traveling ahead of my wife and family, I will not be able to self-pack, and will have to take the option to pay for company pack. Is the $7,850 price reasonable to go from the southeast US across the Gulf of Mexico to Colombia? Others have shipped half way around the world for less I think… Am I out of touch?
Thanks
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 13:42h, 01 MayHello Scot, a lot depends on the shipping rate for the container and the price of customs clearance and delivery. The trucking from Chattanooga and ocean freight to Bogota cost is about $3600. An agent down there charges about $3200 for customs clearance and delivery so add the packing costs and a little profit and your at $7850 so who ever quoted you that is spot on and that’s a normal price. Good luck with your move, do make sure they are licensed and bonded with the Federal Maritime Commission. Cheers The Moving Doctor.

Posted at 19:45h, 29 AprilHi Mark!
I’m actually just interested in moving one large box of an estimated 50 pounds or so, from Los Angeles to Kent, Ohio.
Is there any way you guys could help me with this?
What is the process, and what would be my cost for this, approximately?
Thank you very much!
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 13:31h, 30 AprilHello Emmy, I suggest going to a UPS terminal or office near you and ask them for a door to door ground service price. I think that will be the most economical way with costs around $75. Cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 14:45h, 29 AprilHi Mark
we are moving a small 3 bedroom house from bryn mawr PA to England at the begining of August. I am starting to pack now as I leave july 7th with the kids and my husband will follow in august, but i will have the majority of the house packed before i leave so all he has to do is load it up. My first question is, can i use the plastic storage totes or are cardbaord boxes better (non-slip) ?? secondly, we do not have that much stuff in boxes but do have 3 beds, mattresses, chest draws, dining room table – what if we do not fill a 20ft container ??
also – with regards to a packing list – do i write a seperate sheet for each box in detail or can i say box 1 = toys box 2 = books
thank you
regards
sian shanahan
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 19:43h, 29 AprilHello Sian, if you have more than a few bits of furniture to move then a 20 foot is safe even if you don’t fill it up. The trick is to spread everything out from front to back and side to side in there. It doesn’t matter about the height but everything needs to be loaded nice and tight so if the ship rolls 45 degrees nothing will slide or if the truck driver jams on his brakes nothing will move. Yes you can use plastic totes if you are loading a container. If you are doing a smaller shipment like baggage or shared container then cardboard does seem to stand the journey better though. The packing list can be vague like box 1 clothes, box 2 kids toys, box 3 books but you cant be too vague and say for example bag as then customs will ask what’s in it so if you have a hand bag or something with nothing in it write it as empty bag. For more info on how to do a packing list see our presentation here.
I hope that helps, let me know if you need a price or any other questions, cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 05:53h, 29 AprilHi, I have some items in storage in the UK (Newcastle-upon-Tyne) with Safestore but I’m looking to ship the contents out to my home in Thailand.
I currently rent a 75 sq ft room, but it’s certainly not full and I could fit the items into 50 sq ft (maybe 60 sq ft maximum). Could you tell me how much I should expect to pay for a full door (or storage)-to-door service?
I have no urgency for the items, so I could wait to share cargo space. I’d need the team to take items out of the hold, load them into the truck/container, arrange shipment to Thailand and then move them from the port (and through customs) to my front door in Pattaya.
Lots of info I know, but if you can provide me even a rough estimate I’d be very grateful.
Kindest regards,
Ian

I have to move in August/September from Bad Nauheim ( Germany) to Columbus ( Ohio, United States of America).
How should I plan with this. My company would pay the entire costs for the movement. They would also give me storage for 2 months in the US.
When I leave Germany, I would not have found a house in US yet and I would take the 2 months storage my company would pay.
please advise.

The Moving Doctor
Posted at 17:23h, 24 AprilHi Lisa, yes we can do this with our U Pod, U Box and U Crate but not with the big shipping 20 foot containers as they belong to the shipping lines and they need to get emptied out quickly so they can use it again on another voyage. I’ll get Pete in our office to email you and see what we can do though, cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 07:12h, 22 AprilHello!
I am moving from the US to Ireland. I will not be taking any furniture or household goods, only clothing, fishing gear, and important personal papers and trinkets.
I need to have the cheapest option(s) available. I will be packing everything myself, BUT, as I have sold my car, will need pickup from the house I am living in. When my things arrive to IRL, they can be picked up, no problem.
I am leaving in 2 weeks, so I need immediate options.
Thank you so much, Dr!!

Thanks,

Posted at 14:40h, 22 AprilHello Cathleen, wow that will be a change in scenery! Yes we do provide services to Africa, mainly for missionaries, charities and aid workers. I will get Chris in our office to advise you transit times, prices, service options etc. I think a U Box or U Crate would be best for a journey like this unless you are taking a whole houseload in which case a 20 foot shipping container.
Many thanks for your message, The Moving Doctor

I’ve been living in Boston MA for the past 3 years, and I’ve just suddenly decided to move back home to the Middle East. I want to sell my furniture, donate my kitchen appliances, and move about 6 bags worth of clothing with me.
where is the best and fastest place to sell furniture?
should I get pay extra to add more luggage with me on the plane, or is it cheaper to get a moving company for the bags?
And do u have any suggestions on where to donate my appliances?

Posted at 14:31h, 18 AprilHi there
I moved to the Boston metro west area from Dublin just under 2 years ago. The move was paid for. Now – due to unforseen circumstances, I’m moving back to Dublin. This is an ‘own’ move. I need to do this on a tight budget, and am willing to pack this end. I need professional packing for dishes and glasses objects, and furniture wrapping. I’ll need a 20ft contaner and am flexible for a date in early to mid June. I’ll need ublaoding the other end – one desk and one shelf assembled, and 3 dressers brought upstairs if it saves to do this on my own the other end. I’ve contacted about 8 different companies and the bids are not consistent. There’s a wide difference between some companies. Can you help? Can you tell me what’s my best options. I read that you are the expert! Thanks. Orla
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:02h, 21 AprilHello Orla, we can give you prices for us packing and you packing and loading. Rates can vary between companies as some are very VIP and specialize more in Corporate moving and charge accordingly. Then there are others who just seem too cheap but when you check the small print they have not included things like port charges, customs clearance and in some cases even delivery! Also you will save about $3,000 if you and your friends can pack and load a container yourselves. I’ll get Stephanie in our office who specializes in self load containers to give you a price and also Budd who can give you a price including packing and loading all done for you.
I hope that helps and let me know if you need any other questions answered, cheers The Moving Doctor

thanks,

The Moving Doctor
Posted at 18:17h, 16 AprilHello Bill, Im not sure to be honest as we don’t really do domestic but I suggest a cheap way would be to package up the chair into a box and take it to a trucking company like UPS Freight and get them to ship it to their nearest terminal and you then collect it. So rather than door to door you only pay for terminal to terminal. Hope that’s helps Cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 07:04h, 16 AprilHi,
I’m trying to get the cheapest quote …
Ok we are moving to porto and need our stuff picking up from London, north, manor house….easy access ….we live in an old converted warehouse. We need it taking to porto. Portugal. The access too is easy enough, and the house is right near the central train station.
Ok I have three large suitcase of personal items, shoes and clothes, a big box of books, my boyfriend has a small suitcase of clothes, a couple of pictures, a slim doored shelving unit, a smog fridge and a set of four stacking table chairs, and an extra box or two, bedlinnen. And a coffee table.
You you give us a reasonable quote. As you can see it is nowhere near enough stuff to fill a house, it is blearily enough for a bedsit.
Best Sharon

Posted at 01:22h, 16 AprilHi,
My family will return to Hungary and I need to send some of their belongings (books, clothing and a bunch of hand tools). The tools are mostly small size (for jewelry) but there are a heavy one, too (56 lb.).
I’d like to ask your advice about the most economical way to ship them to home in July. It isn’t time sensitive.
Later I will follow them and I will need to ship my belongings, including a small “workshop” (some power and hand tools, small workbench) and a couple of guitars.
Again, I’d like to know about the most economical solution.
The problem is that I can’t even estimate the volume and weight of the shipment yet. 🙁
Thanks,

Posted at 20:14h, 08 AprilI’m going to be moving to Scotland in June. I have less than 50 cubic feet (estimate) to move, including 4 pieces of (small) furniture. Can these (furniture) be moved in a uCrate? Are there better options? I would be willing to forgo the furniture if it makes a huge cost difference.
I don’t care how long it takes to get items there, cost effective shipping is of primary concern.
Other companies have said THEY must pack for customs reasons. My assumption is that customs could charge whether I pack or a company packs – I’m not sure what the difference is.
I don’t have a vehicle large enough to carry all items to a terminal, so door to door is ideal.
Lastly; on the receiving end, a ferry is required to get items to the town (unless a long road drive is preferred!); will all-inclusive quotes cover the cost of this – or would that end up being an add on charge?

Posted at 13:40h, 09 AprilHello Kerry, unfortunately you don’t say where you are from but presuming somewhere in the USA? If you need a door to door option then our U Box would be the best idea. We send you the U Box flat packed via UPS, you put the 4 pieces together say in your garage, fill it up and then we can collect it and ship it through to door in Scotland. The U Box holds 50 cubic feet so it sounds like the right size for you!
Now in Scotland, our prices are based on mainland so no the rates would not include a ferry and I doubt if we could get a tail lift truck to deliver to the island so it might be better if you know of someone on the mainland that we could deliver to. Regarding UK Customs, there is NO law that says you can not pack your own things, you do however have to do a packing list the same as the mover would do for you so when in UK Customs look at the packing list it looks no different to them whether you filled it out or a mover! Movers in the USA say you are not allowed to pack yourself but that’s so they can charge you a small fortune for packing your things! That’s where a moving company makes its money!
Peter in our office will email you some prices and let us know if you have any other questions, cheers The Moving Doctor

The Moving Doctor
Posted at 13:29h, 08 AprilHello Ruta, you have to be residing outside of Europe for 12 months and then declare on your customs form that you are transferring to Europe your residency and all your items are over 6 months old in order to get duty and tax free entry. Cheers The Moving Doctor, ps if you need a quote please email move@upakweship.com

Posted at 05:22h, 07 AprilHello Mark,
I am in the middle of moving to the USA – my 29 cubic metres of personal effects ie 1 20 foot container, arrived in New jersey, NY on 19th March, Allied Intl didn’t let me know for a few days, I was only meant to be up for customs charges, anyways it seems my stuff has been selected for a full US Customs exam and they are saying I am up for a $2,000US customs fee plus $165 a day shipping container fees plus other fees, none of which have ever been shown or explained to me, and if I don’t get my stuff Thursday this week then I am up for all these extra fees, when I paid fort a door to door service. My questions are a. if its customs who have been holding onto and inspecting my stuff all this time, am I up for extra demurrage charged by the day? b. does US customs really charge $2,000US to inspect my 29 cubic metres of stuff and c. can Allied just charge me what they like, against a list of costs I have never seen, or are there agreed maximum rates they can levy? d. I thought I got 5 days of free time, is this the case? All the best, David Rook.

Posted at 13:51h, 08 AprilHello David, its a little hard to comment without knowing all the facts but this is normally the case……
If Customs choose to inspect your shipment which these days is a good 50/50 customs uses a private contractor they use to truck container out of the port to their facility and unload the contents for customs to then inspect it. After the inspection the contractor loads it all back into the container and takes the container back to the port.
The contractor charges a lot of money for this service which as the goods are yours, ultimately you have to pay for. Somewhere in the contract it will say that charges relating to customs inspections are not included. They cant be as no one would know how much to charge.
Now meanwhile while this is all going on, the shipping line says heh I am not getting my shipping container back on time as promised therefore I am charging a penalty fee for the late return of my empty container.
So you as the end user are paying a company who is under contract by customs to unload your container and re load afterwards and truck it to and from the port.
The shipping line for the delay in them getting their container back
On top of this the mover will probably add on $100 or so for handling all the extra communication on this as well as pre paying the money to the contractor and the shipping line.
The trouble is while you argue the fact of the charges which I totally understand why you would want to, the daily rate keeps going up.
So my advise is to pay it all asap to get it out of the port and stop further charges.
When we have had a customer with similar charges, we have asked the customer to pay the contractor and shipping line direct as a way to prove its not us asking for these charges and are not profiting from this. You might ask for the same?
Then start asking the mover for proof that this inspection happened, ask for copies of invoices, if you are not getting anywhere call the shipping line imports division and see what they say and speak to customs if necessary for their explanation.
So bottom line everything they have told you is probably correct. Its wrong in my opinion that these horrendous charges have to be paid by this system and the industry id trying to fight this but for the moment it is the way. Customs say they don’t charge anything, which is technically true but they use a contractor who is allowed to charge very high prices for unloading and reloading on their behalf!
Its tough as the mover is in the middle. they get the bad name but all they are doing is passing on the charges. The mover should not be making any profit on this but gets all the negative comments. Customs just say they are doing their job and protecting the country, and their contractor gets rich! (Just my opinion)
Make sure though that you get proof of these charges after you have paid. If nothing comes forward then I think you can write your comments on yelp, expat online notice boards, moving scam web sites etc but give the mover a chance to prove it is all legitimate.
Hope that helps some and if you need more advise feel free to email me move@upakweship.com Cheers The Moving Doctor

Posted at 21:47h, 06 AprilHello,
Im moving back to London, UK from Vancouver, Canada. I wish to take a few items (stereo seperates, speakers, record collection, Musical instruments – guitar, trombone, medium case of electronic machines). All of which could be potentially packed into a large chest. 4ft x 3ft, probably not weighing more than 70kg. What would be the most cost effective way of getting this done?
Splendid
