We are moving to Italy and are wondering if it makes sense to ship our belongings (furniture, clothes, bikes, personal items) or purchase new items over there. Although, we do not have super expensive furniture, we do have a lot and it will be expensive to purchase new items there in euros. Hope you can give us some suggestions or different options. If possible, can you give us some prices on different solutions?

Hello Son, unfortunately you don’t say where you are, but yes if you have decent furniture you want to take, then you can probably ship it for a lot cheaper than buying new. I always say economically speaking either take just boxes and may be some small furniture items or take the lot. Anything in between doesn’t really make cost effective sense when moving overseas. A self load 20foot shipping container would probably be the best way for you to ship everything. I will ask Stephanie in our office to email you to find out where you are so that we can then give to some service options and prices.

    Hi Mark,

I am moving to Taiwan from UK by the end of this month (Sept 2014), and as I’ve been living in London for the last 6 years I’ve had quite a few stuff accumulated throughout the time. However in order to make the moving easier, I’ve gotten rid of a lot of things which leaves me only my cloth, shoes and some personal belongings. I have been looking for international removal companies however as I don’t have any furniture or so, I wonder if using the removal company is a wise choice as it can be pretty expensive.

I doubt I could take more than one big luggage on flight therefore if not using the removing company, I don’t know what else I can do.

Many thanks for replying me in advance.

    Claudia

Hello Claudia, let me pass this over to Chris Corder in our office to see what he can do and advise options and prices. Please not also that in order to get duty and tax free entry into the UK, you have to state you have moved to the UK within the last 6 months otherwise customs unfortunately have a right to charge you duties and taxes (roughly 30% of the declared used value plus cost of the shipping and insurance.) One way around this that sometimes works if you can prove you were paying for storage while saving up to pay for the shipping but you would have to provide receipts of payments to the storage company.
I hope that helps and Chris will be in touch

    Hi there

I have a 26.2 inch doorway and I would like to buy a chair with a height of equal measure. All the other measurements seem to be fine besides the 4.5 foot landing. The chair has a depth of 61 inches. Is it possible for the chair to be squeezed through the door given the cushion that could potentially allow some space? Would an experience mover know how to maneuver it though?

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 15:39h, 05 September Reply

Hello Karen, I’m not confident in saying yes it will be ok without seeing it but a good mover should be able to figure it out. There are a lot of options, may be trying to get it through on its side, may be feet first, take cushions off, or taking the door off can sometimes work. Would be rare if someone has manufactured a chair that doesn’t fit through a door!
Hope that helps and yes try and get an experienced mover to help you. Ask your friends first if they know anyone that has experience before paying a mover though.
Let us know how you get on.

    Hi Mark,

We’re moving from USA home to Australia. We only have a few items – two bikes, which we will box up, and two boxes of clothing, books, shoes etc.

When I use the calculator, it comes to about 30 cubic feet, but I am concerned that the awkward shape of the bike boxes will mean we need to purchase 50 cubic feet – can you advise?

    Thanks

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 15:43h, 05 September Reply

Hello Caroline, yes the bike box due to the height will make this in the 31-50 cubic foot range once its put on a pallet. If it helps the financial pain, we are getting rid of the 1-30 cube baggage rates and just doing a 1-50 cube rate due to items like this.
Good luck with the packing and let me know if you need any help on packing advice or measuring.

Posted at 20:52h, 03 September Reply

Hello Julio. This depends on a few factors. Where are you moving from? Would your furniture look right in UAE and what’s your furniture worth. If its expensive then it might be worth taking but if its run of the mill you might want to consider buying new things when you get there or rent a furnished place for a while and just ship your personal items like pictures, computer, clothes, bedding etc
If you fill out our quick quote form we can come back to you with some options and prices.

    • The Moving Doctor

Hello Peter, If you are wanting to take beds, sofas and that sort of stuff, the safest and cheapest way of doing this is using our self load shipping container service. The containers come on a back of a truck and are aprox 20 feet by 8 feet wide and 8 foot 6 inches high. That’s about the size of a single car garage and will normally fit a small 3 bed house, town houses or a flat. You have to pack and load it up yourselves and unload it the other end but we will take care of everything in between. You can normally save between $2500-$3,000 by using this service rather than a full service moving company. Even if you pack everything yourselves and hire a local mover at about $500 to help you load it, you are still quids in. I’ll get Stephanie in our office to email you so she can find out from where to where and then send you a quote for this. We can also offer various cheaper options for smaller amounts if you choose to send a smaller amount of furniture. I hope this helps and let me know if you need more advice, help or any questions, cheers Mark

I would like a safe, economical way to ship a secretary desk and matching chair to my sister in Aix-en-Provence, France. It is teak with beautiful hand-carving. Originally comes from Taiwan where we lived from 1959-64 when our parents were medical missionaries. Would need to be shipped from Shoreview, Minnesota (suburb of St. Paul). Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Hello Marjory. This sounds like a very unique piece of furniture which has been with the family for many years and has a lot of fond memories attached to it. In this instance I would suggest not trying to pack this yourself. I suggest asking a few local movers in your area to give you a price for export packing these two items and then placing them in a crate. If they are affiliated with a van line like Allied or United for example they could quote you for shipping it. We could also give you a quote for the shipping once we knew the size of the crate.
Also please bear in mind that this might be assessed with duties and taxes in Europe if this is being shipped as a gift and not attached to someone moving over there or named in a will.
If you need more information, please feel free to email me at move@upakweship.com or call at 1 866 868 6386

    Hi
After eighteen years in the US my husband and I are moving back to the UK. We are not taking any furniture but I do want to take quite a lot of books and pictures etc. My husband does not think that this will be worthwhile financially, but I cannot live without my books. Would have you have any advice/suggestions that might be satisfactory to both of us?

    Many thanks,

Posted at 14:24h, 23 August Reply

Hello Alison, depending on what you have I think leaving your furniture behind can be a good idea but leaving all your personal items behind is a different story. These are your personal memories, gifts, pictures, keepsakes you got on holiday, plus your not going to get many big thick sweaters and coats that you need in the UK in 2 suitcases lol. We have a few different services and pricing options that might suit you. Depending where you are you could probably save some money by dropping your boxes off at one of our 88 terminals across the country or may be you could load one of our U Cubes at your house. These U Cubes will hold 50 cubic feet and its an all inclusive door to door lump sum price for whatever you can get to fit in it. That’s nice if you are on a tight budget or have a tight husband 🙂 A U Cube from most places in US to England is $1209 which I think is a great deal for a door to door all inc service. We do have cheaper baggage options to starting at $860 all inclusive terminal to door. Anyway I will get Peter to email you all our rates and options and hopefully we will have something that suits your needs and budget. Cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi Wendy, use at least 6 foot straps to loop around the axle on the inside of each wheel and secure to the wood floor about 2 feet in front and behind for rear tires and nail gun a piece of wood twisted around the strap to make it tight and nail gun it to the floor.

Hi guys I’m just wondering how much it will cost to ship a 14 foot boat from Toronto to Australia Queensland .

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 12:54h, 12 August Reply

Hello Jordan, this really depends on the width of the boat and trailer to see if we can fit it in a 20 foot container. If the boat is too wide it needs to be secured on to a flat bed container or Flat Rack as they are called. This is a specialized job normally handled by a boat dealer, specialized boat shipper or rigging company and beyond our expertise. I’ll pass on to Pete on our Canada desk to see what he can advise though and see if he has any recommendations, Cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi Kathy, we normally need a weeks notice to get a U Cube to you but if needed we can send it to you on a faster service eg a 2 or 3 day service but the costs does go up to cover the express delivery service. We use UPS to ship out the flat packed U Cubes to you so you can track it on line with UPS.
With the weeks notice we can get it there pretty much any day you would like, Mon – Fri
You can keep the U Cube as long as you need at the storage unit so I would get it delivered at the beginning of the trip and ask the self storage front office to receive the U Cube on your behalf so you can have it there when you arrive.
Once you have finished loading and its ready to go, call us and we will collect the next day Mon-Fri. Normally its any time during the day but for an extra $75 we can arrange a 2 hour window for collection that might help you in this case.
I hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doctor

Hello, we are moving our family of 10 from NC to Scotland and cannot decide if we take everything with us, including our Toyota Prius (40 ft. container), or just our clothes, books, sentimental stuff, etc. (maybe a U-Cube or U-Crate?). I’ve read that lots of people sell all and start fresh when moving overseas for long periods of time. The shipping times will play a huge part in our decision making process, so are there different shipping times for containers with cars, containers without cars, and the smaller U-Boxes?
    Thanks!

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 13:35h, 11 August Reply

Hello Liz, to be honest I am not a huge fan of sending cars in containers to England. They do take longer to export and to import due to extra security layers involved with shipping autos so I would add on at least and extra 10 days on the transit time of a container. There can be some extra roll fees (container misses ship and gets rolled to next vessel) as well as possible port storage fees due to Customs delays as well. Obviously bear in mind the steering wheel will be on the curbside in the UK but great if you plan on having lots of holidays in Europe! Motor insurance will also be higher with a left hand drive in the UK and re sale will be lower due to it being a left hand drive. An alternative would be RORO if you still want to take it, that’s where you would drive it to the port and collect it at the other end. You could do this and then ship your things in a U Cube or U Crate may be? You are not allowed to put anything in your car though for shipping if you do this.
I’ll get Stephanie to confirm to you the transit time on the container with a car and Peter on a U Cube for you.
      Hope that helps,
      Cheers The Moving Doctor

Hello Kristine, I used to work and live in Jeddah. Its a very different and interesting place! I suggest getting a quote with and without the mattress set as I think it might be worth just shipping the boxes and buying a new mattress set when you get there unless its a really fancy one.
Either way I will get Peter to contact you and give you rates for a U Cube for the boxes and U Pod for the boxes and mattress. Please be aware there is a 100% customs inspection rule in Saudi Arabia and you can not ship any religious things including statues that you might want to worship as well as nothing alcohol or pornographic. Also be careful of any labels in clothes that might be from a Jewish store that is on the black list and if in doubt cut out labels.
I trust you are ok giving up Bacon!

I’m planning a move to France on May 15, 2014. I’m planning to take some household goods with me. I’m trying to guage costs. I’m looking at doing cheapship service.
Do you use a 4×3.5 pallet to load to load the goods?
Am I right to understand that the first 35.31 cu. ft is 424 and and the per additional cost is 2.65 per cu ft?
How high can we/you load a pallet?
Will the pallets be provided by you?
Is that rate the same no matter how many pallets you use?
Is Paris the only terminal that you use in France? We are moving to the southwest of the country.
How long does this method take from drop off in Boston to arrival and ready for pick up in Paris.
And lastly, we would drop off in Boston but our stuff actually ships out of Charleston?
    Thanks

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:02h, 11 August Reply

Hello Mike, our pallets are 48 x 40 inches and you can load up to about 6.5 feet high safely. Make sure everything is within the pallet size as anything sticking out beyond the pallet area could be hit by another pallet or the container wall when loading or unloading the container. Yes we can provide the pallets, tape and even tie straps and a plastic shroud you can put over it for a small extra charge.
depending on the final volume and amount of pallets we might be able to give you a discount. We can ship them to many terminals in France including for example Marseilles and Bordeaux but at slightly different rates. Transit on this service is about 4-5 weeks and yes you can drop off in Boston. Please note however that the Cheap Ship Terminal to Terminal service does NOT include Customs clearance or Port fees at destination. We can advise the approximate costs involved for this when we know the volume. If your French is great and you enjoy a challenge you can try to clear customs your self at the port of entry or if not contract a customs broker at about 150-200 Euros to do this. Bear in mind all transactions and communications will be in French as we ship directly from Boston to France. If however you chose one of our to door service like the U Crate or U Pod then we ship via our England terminal and our rates include all the Customs fees and port charges and we actually clear customs in England for Europe so we don’t have to deal with European Customs formalities.
I’ll get Peter in our office here to explain more and give you the rates and service options for Cheap Ship and the all inclusive to door services.
If this sounds a little confusing please by all means call me.

Our cube has arrived and everyone at UPakWeShip has been so helpful!! I just have a couple of more questions if you have time to answer.

    1. If shipping an UCube, do we need to put the plywood sheets or 8×4 wood in front as stated on pg 3 of how to pack for an international move?
    2. When marking the boxes, do we just put our name and item number (box number – i am guessing) on it and not the address?
    3. For the dates, is it 31 July 2014 or 31 07 2014?
    4. If we don’t have an address yet, what do we need to put? We may have an APO address but we are not sure if we will get it in time.
    5. For the “date of moving”, is that the date you are picking up the crate, the date we are leaving the country or the date of arrival in Germany?
    6. Finally, we have a small safe that will be empty when shipping it. Do we need to leave the key attached?

Thank you again for all your patience, kindness and understanding. We are excited to be moving and with your help, it makes the move easier!!

Hello Joanne, glad to hear we are being helpful! Answers to your questions are below:
1/ No plywood needed, that’s if you wanted to hold your shipmen in place with a self load 20 foot shipping container and not a U Cube
2/ Your Name and box number please
      3/ 31st July 2014 is good!
4/ Just a contact address is good for now so if you don’t have a residence address a hotel or company work address is good. You can email us the delivery address later on when you get there and find a place but Customs just need a contact address on the customs form.
5/ The date of arriving in Germany is good.
6/ Please keep key in safe or attached. Make sure safe is in middle of U Cube so its not extra heavy on one end!
We are excited to be moving you too! Good luck with your travels and have a safe flight over, cheers, The Moving Doctor.

    Hellow,
We’ve used your services to move from Seattle to England and back again- I was wondering if we could use a UPOD for domestic service between Seattle and Boston? If so, how long does stuff take to ship and how much would it cost?
If not UPOD, it looks like you do offer a Crate, but I think it would take 2-3 crates at minimum. (Hence the request for aUPOD). If the cost of the UCrates is way less, I guess it would be worth seeing that price as well.

    Hi there,

I’m hoping to find the best way to ship a few items of furniture from the San Francisco, CA area to Curacao. It’s not a huge load – a small round kitchen table, a sofa, a television cabinet and coffee table. Like most folks here cost is a factor, while also trying to make sure everything arrives safe and sound. Thanks very much for your help!

    Hello,

I was wonder what would it cost to ship a king size bed from New Jersey to Germany. Is it worth it, I don’t really do not the German beds or mattress. I miss the king size beds from home or is the anyway I can get one in Europe. I can get a great deal if I buy it at home. A very good deal, but I really need to know would it cost more to ship overseas then what it would be worth itself.

    Thanks and best Regards
    Willie

Posted at 14:41h, 28 July Reply

Hello Willie, we can ship one for you but it will probably cost more than the bed plus you would have to pay duties and taxes on it at about 30% of the value as well. If you would like a quote please complete our quick quote form but thinking at about $1500 probably not worth it! Cheers The Moving Doctor

We might be moving from Chicago to Dublin and are contemplating taking 300lbs of items.
What would be the door to door rates(can you give me the rates for a range of weighs, too)?
What is the process (do we pack and your team picks up from the house?, do we pack and take it to your team in Chicago etc)?

Do you need any more information from me?

    Thanks Doc!

    Hello,
is it possible to rent a space in the shipping container? I am about to import from Guatemala to Norway but would not probably fill the container. Thank you.

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:17h, 22 July Reply

Hello Daniel, you can share a container load with others. It is offered by freight forwarders or shipping agents. They will load your items with other commodities to make up a full container load. The service you are looking for is called LCL or Less than Container Load. You will need to have all your items in a crate or shrink wrapped onto pallets to keep them safe. I suggest you call or email various freight forwarders in Guatemala and get some rates for shipping LCL to Oslo. Once it arrives you will have to pay port charges and customs clearance fees before you can collect your cargo.
Hope this helps, cheers The Moving Doctor.

Hello Rose, I would actually need to know where you are moving from to give you a price but if you only have 50lbs which presumably is like one extra suitcase, it would be cheaper to take it with you on the plane, even if you have to pay for excess baggage. You might also look into paying for the extra bag with air miles or may be upgrade your seat with air miles and that now gives you a larger allowance for carry on or checked baggage. Hope that helps and have fun in Reading, my sister used to live there so I know it well, cheers The Moving Doctor

I have spoken to you earlier and have received some good information and assistance. We are moving from Omaha, Nebraska to Germany and I had a few more questions.
    1. I think you stated that it takes 5 business days after the order is placed to receive the UCubes – is this correct or have I confused the time (sorry, it has been hectic here).
    2. My husband has 2 old swords worth probably $20 each. Would that cause a problem in customs?
    3. How many business days in advance do we need to schedule a pick up time for the UCubes?
    4. What is the process after you pick up the UCubes? For example, the video was very good regarding tracking, etc. But I have read where the Cubes go through London and there is a VAT tax on the items? Could you please explain this more – such as how much is the tax if there is any, could there be a delay in the UCube reaching us in Germany, etc?
    5. My husband’s company is giving him a moving allowance. Do you or could you coordinate the payment with them?

Thank you for your time, assistance and patience.

      2. My husband has 2 old swords worth probably $20 each. Would that cause a problem in customs? It possibly could cause delays and extra inspection so for the sake of $40 I suggest leaving them out!
      3. How many business days in advance do we need to schedule a pick up time for the UCubes? 24 hours please Monday to Friday
      4. What is the process after you pick up the UCubes? For example, the video was very good regarding tracking, etc. But I have read where the Cubes go through London and there is a VAT tax on the items? We do ship all the U Cubes etc through our hub in England first and that’s where we clear all European shipments through customs. Once that is done there are no further formalities to any EU country. As long as you declare on your customs form (C3) that we will email you, that you have lived outside of the European Community for the past 12 months, you are now moving your normal residency into Europe and all your belongings are more than 6 months old, there will be no duty or vat charged.
Could you please explain this more – such as how much is the tax if there is any, could there be a delay in the UCube reaching us in Germany, etc? As long as you declare as above there will be no delays and no extra charges. For more details about completing the customs form click here
      5. My husband’s company is giving him a moving allowance. Do you or could you coordinate the payment with them? Absolutely, we are happy to invoice whom ever, as long as we get paid by someone we are very happy!

We have a three bed flat, aprox 2200 sq ft in London which we would like to move to Las Vegas NV USA.
Only one bed (US proper king sized ) it’s a memory foam. The other bedrooms were used for storage, and office space. No frame. Two leather sectional sofas in the living room.
We are wondering if you have packing people available as well?
We are both currently dealing with matters here in the US and hope to avoid having to go back and do this ourselves. We do have someone there in London to coordinate.
