In the near future, I will be leaving USA to stay in Cuenca, Ecuador. I want to bring as many clothes as possible. My first thought was to buy about 3 or 4 suitcases, and pack as much clothing in them as I can. Due to the airline restrictions on suitcase size and weight, I will not be able to purchase extra large suitcases as planned, because I will be charged additional fees. This means I may not be able to bring as many clothes with me as planned without paying the additional fee. What other cost effective options do I have to move the bulk of my clothing overseas with me?

Posted at 12:01h, 29 December Reply

Hello Lynn, even though its expensive to send extra luggage with the airline, at least it travels with you and is there when you arrive. The alternative is UPS but you will find it is still quite expensive. I don’t think there are any other alternatives I’m afraid. Enjoy your trip, cheers and Happy New year, The Moving Doctor

    Hello,

I will be moving to Denmark from US, hopefully in the spring or summer and I was wondering if you could give me a quote on about how much it would cost to move my belongings. I only have clothes, knick knacks and my computer. No furniture or anything huge.

Hello. I live in calgary canada and may be moving to the UK in a couple years. I have some quality couches and a king size bed, also my car. I’m wondering if it is cost effective for me to ship these items or just try to sell them and buy new onces once I’m there? Your opinion please.

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 21:56h, 17 December Reply

Hello Francy, unless the bed and couches are very expensive and you are sure they will fit in your new residence in UK, I suggest selling them here and just ship your personal items in boxes and treat yourself to a new sofa and bed in UK. Beds are different sizes in UK as well so fitted sheets are a different size over there!
Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doctor

I am moving from USA ( Arizona) back to UK and want to bring some statues that are relatively small in size but very heavy. Very roughly, and can weigh and get specifics but about 40/ 50 LBS (REALLY JUST GUESSING HERE – SORRY) and irregular shape again roughly for the two of them packed together – very roughly 3x3x3. I can get specifics – did not realize this was other than an advice site. They are of no real value except to me. Please let me know and thank you Siobhan

Posted at 14:06h, 16 December Reply

Hello Siobhan, thanks for the message, I presume they are fragile so I would recommend our U Cube to pack and load them in. First though you will need to wrap them in lots of bubble wrap and then put them into a cardboard box or make one out of cardboard. Use some crushed up paper at the bottom and top of the box to absorb any jolts during travel. I’ll get Pete in our office to email you and give you some options and prices. Cheers The Moving Doctor

Moving from North Carolina to UK. My husband will stay back in the house and what i need to be shipped would take about 15-20 medium size boxes (shoes, books, kitchen stuff, bed linen etc.). Hi Mark,

I need to get about 400 lbs of used clothes (left by my deceased daughter-in-law, value about $500) shipped from Hermosa beach,CA,USA , which is near LAX, to my home in Pong, Thailand ( 80 miles south of BKK). I have looked at FeX UPS, US postal service, LCL ocean fright, etc . . . but have become overwhelmed by the various, prices, options and regulations . . . Can you help me cut to the chase, guide me to the right type of service? Length of transit time up to three or four months would be OK. Door to door pick up and delivery would be nice, but not necessary.

Also, is there a rough dollar amount per pound guideline for this type of smallish overseas shipment?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hi,

We are moving back to the USA from London. We wanted to send around 9 boxes over as well as a heavy metal frame. The issue we are coming across is an old antique steamer trunk I have. I dont know if the issue is the weight (over 35 – 40 kg) and something to do with health and safety issues here.

Is there a service to where we can pack our stuff and deliver it to the port here or if need be can have it collected. We are moving to New Mexico so it needs to go to Texas and we can collect or have it delivered. I really just dont want to leave my favourite trunk here!

Both of them will come back to you with prices through to your door in New Mexico.

Chair from the UK to Florida (both were bought in the US). Is there anyone who has

Hello Melanie, we could definitely give you a quote for this and I will pass this over to Chris in our office. I suggest you get 3 quotes and may be also get quotes from Sterling, Crown or Interdean for comparisons. If you are buying new furniture, don’t forget you will have to pay taxes upon arrival in USA but if buying from a large store like Harrods for example you should be able to purchase it tax free therefore avoiding paying British taxes. Hello,

Trying to see what makes the most sense. We are moving to Ireland from Chicago and need to bring a few things. At this time, we are not brining furniture. Just boxes of clothing, household items, bedding, utensils, some art work and some decor. Additionally we need to pack a few large kid items, like bikes and a few outdoor toys. What is the best unit to use? Also, once we pay the upackweship fee, I don’t understand if we pay additional fees such as VAT or other taxes once our items arrive. Since all are used items, do we pay additional fees. Or is your door to door quote, all in? Also what it typical time to ship to IRE? Always on a budget but will pay for security and comfort! 🙂

Thanks.. PS. This is for a Jun 2015 move.. 🙂 Cheers!!

Hello Eilish, thanks for the good questions. If you are transferring your normal residency from the USA to Europe and you have lived in the USA for the last 12 months, all your items are declared on your customs form which we provide to you as being more than 6 months old, there will be no extra charges or taxes or duties. Our prices are all inclusive door to door. Transit times vary depending on the service you choose but for example our popular and very safe U Cube service would take about 5-7 weeks door to door.
I will ask Pete in our office to email you some different service options and prices.
Well done being so organized and preparing for your move well in advance. The more time you have to prepare and the more questions you ask, the smoother the move will go!

Hi Mark, we’re thinking of moving back to the UK and taking three quarters of the contents of a big four bed two bath home in Perth, Australia. We could limit this to a 20’ container, because reading some of the comments on here, it appears we’d have plenty of room or we’ll leave stuff behind. Please let us know how this would work – how soon before we’re ready to leave could the container be delivered and how long would we have to fill it? How long does it take from leaving our home in Perth to arriving at our new place in Leeds, Yorkshire? And, finally, how much will it cost?

    Thanks very much.

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 19:36h, 17 November Reply

Hi Alison, we can give you a door to door all inclusive price for a 20foot container that you load and unload and we do everything in between. Normally you get 2 hours free to load it and then unload it the other end. This is do able if everything is packed and downstairs or in the garage ready for when the container comes and you have some friends to help you load everything. Also at the destination concentrate on just unloading the container in 2 hours and then worry about where everything is going to go in the little English house after the container truck has left! Typically a 20foot container is going to hold a small house, not a large one with lots of kids toys and outside furniture etc. If is about the same size as a single garage if that helps you visualize if it will all fit. If you think it might be tight have everything staged say in the garage in priority order so in the front of the garage doors have everything that must go but towards the back have items that will go only if there is enough room left.
I will pass the over to Chris Corder in our office to contact you regarding the transit time and pricing. Many thanks for the questions, Cheers The Moving Doctor

hi my family and i were born and raised in hawaii. We are now deciding to move to washington state next year in the summer…maybe. We need some advice for freight shipping overseas. Is it cheaper to sell our furniture here in hawaii and buy new/used ones at washington? Or is it better to ship it overseas? Theres nothing valuable with our furnitures. Also, whats the best way to bring our little things overseas? Shall we pack it in our suitcases with us on the plane ride or should we ship it via postal? Or is there a small pod we can fill and ship? How does that work? What about our cars? We have two vehicles at the moment. One is a 2008 toyota tacoma v6 double cab puckip truck in great condition (54,000 miles about) and a toyota camry 2001 good condition 64,000 miles about. Is it better to sell here in hawaii and buy vehicle in washington or ship them overseas? How much would it cost to ship both? Sorry im an inexperienced mover and need some serious advice.

    Thanks

    Sincerely
    Lynn

Hello Lynna, we don’t actually run a service from Hawaii to USA but I suggest the following. Google search Royal Hawaiian Movers to get quotes on your furniture moving and Google Pasha for getting quotes on shipping your cars. Regarding the furniture, I suggest either moving the lot in a 20 foot container or selling everything and buying new. Anything in between meaning shipping just some furniture isn’t really cost effective. Royal Hawaiian can also give you a quote for moving just your personal things in boxes too.
Hope that helps, Cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi. I will be moving from Michigan, USA to Madrid, Spain the second week of December. I am not taking furniture with me, just some luggage and a few boxes (but I think they will all weight more than 50lb). I was wondering what the best way to do this could be. Thanks!

Hello Belen, what a great place to move to! I’ll get Pete here to email you some door to door options but my personal advice would be to use one of our U Cubes. Its a 50 cubic foot crate that you load at your home, we collect it, ship it clear and deliver the crate to your driveway in Madrid. Its a lump sum price for whatever you can get to fit in there so its very budget friendly! Pete will send you the prices, cheers and happy packing, The Moving Doctor

    Hi

We are moving from South Africa to USA. We are selling all of our appliances, etc but would like to move our beds, couch and a few other boxes over. We could collect from the terminal if need be.

Would you be able to help me? How much would it cost? How long will it take?

    Thanks in advance.

Hi, I want to move 1 container with boxes of textile from Singapore to Ottawa. What would be the cost knowing the value of the goods is around 200.000USD? Are there freq boats leaving from Singapore to Ottawa? Rg, Patrick

Hello Patrick, we specialize in people moving so you would be better trying to find a commercial freight forwarder in Singapore to give you a price. Ships depart weekly. I would Google commercial freight forwarder needed in Singapore or look for Kuhn and Nagel, Shenkers, Panalpina, or any member of WCA.

I actually called today and was supposed to get a quote, but haven’t gotten it yet.
Just wanted to make sure I provided the correct email address: ylee523@gmail.com

    about 8 boxes (18″ x 14″ x 12″)
    20lbs per box

From Chicago to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

I’m kind of worried as I don’t see any reviews regarding shipments to Asia.
I hope your company provides service to Vietnam.
    Thank you.

Hello Jenny, I’ll pass this on to Pete and Ken to give you a quote by sea and also air freight. We can do this no problem and do shipments to Asia every month. Its just as it is not one of our main popular destinations like London, Sydney or Paris for example we have to work out the rates rather than have a standard rating sheet like we have for the popular destinations. I’ll make sure they reply back to you today though and thanks for the follow up and your patience. Cheers The Moving Doctor

We need to move household goods from Miami to Puerta Plata, Dominican Republic. We will be driving an 8×5 U-Haul trailer to Miami and need to know the best way to go from there. Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
I have been researching shipping containers and they all seem too big for what I need. I have been unable to find affordable options.

    Hi,
Can you pick up my boxes in Morocco and/or Ukraine (I got stuff all over the world) and bring them to the USA? Can you pick up at the door and I can collect at a terminal in the US. And where can I check quotes? The website only allows for quotes from the US abroad. Appreciate your help!

    Hello,

My mother-in-law is about to move to the United Arab Emirates for work. The company has offered her a moving stipend of $5,000 USD. She lives in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

In your opinion, is this a reasonable/doable compensation for a single woman with a small house’s worth of furniture? (ie: 1 bedroom, a couch and coffee table, a couple small pieces… She’s leaving behind many of her bigger furniture pieces.)

Additionally, they have provided her with a $10,000 stipend for furniture when she arrives. Is it more cost effective, in your opinion, to ship as little as possible overseas, and buy new items in the UAE, or is there a reasonable option for making an international move such as this one?

    Thanks, Doc!

Hi Rebecca, very good question but it does depend on many things. How long will she be out there? Will she be living in a condo where $10,000 on furniture will go along way or will she be entertaining in a big villa where she will need a lot of fancy furniture?
My personal preference is either take just personal things in boxes via a U Cube or 2 or take the lot in a 20 foot container. A self load 20ft container will cost about $5,000 and a U Cube about $1500 door to door. Anything in between gets expensive for the volume you are shipping.
Having lived in the Middle East myself, I would suggest shipping just personal items for around $1500 and keep the rest to go towards the new items you will buy in UAE. Her existing furniture might not fit or look right in her new home so leave it behind!
I hope that helps and I will get Pete in our office to email you a U Box door to door price as I was guessing around $1500.
Any more questions or clarifications needed please email me. move@upakweship.com
Many thanks for that great question and hope I answered it honestly and well enough.

Hello Birgit, that is a good question. ALL our prices and services are all inclusive through to door except for the Cheap Ship service.
We include customs clearance, port charges, Terminal charges, delivery to curbside or residence depending on the service you choose, and even include basic Customs inspection or X Ray charges for shipments going to Europe.
I hope that clarifies it. Have you seen our Price Guarantee? Click Here.
