    Dear Sir / Madam

I have couple hardware tools to move from Texas to Hotel in Austria. I would be in Austria to wait for upac-50… to receive goods and to move them to Montenegro.
How much would cost me 600lb normal price vs 1500lb that fits upac-50 palette?

The hardware goods include Honda gas power water pump , 600ft firehoses, etc…
What Duty taxes need to be paid for even if the goods do not stay in Austria?
How long is transit time from Texas to Austria?

    Please let me know.
    Thank you in advance

Hello Mark and a happy and successful new year!
We will be moving from Munich to LA, CA. We would like to move along ~ 4 boxes, 60x60x120cm more or less with clothing, shoes and some household items. Boxes shouldn’t be heavier than 30 kilos each. We will pack ourselves and we don’t care much about quick delivery.
We are paying ourselves so every little bit of saving helps.

What would you recommend and how much would it cost? Could I have a quote and recommendations.
Thanks in advance for your reply!

We will be moving from Georgia, USA to Carcassonne, FR in a few months and have looked at the items required to import a few of our household goods. The requirement appears to be that a value and date of purchase needs to be assigned each item on the inventory. How do you assign values to photographs, cookbooks, dictionaries, etc. that were gifts or over 30 years old? I also collect fountain pens so I would not even begin to be able to give a date when each one was acquired. I’m just on the first box of packed items and this can be a bit daunting.

Hello Bill, if you are moving your normal residence from the USA to France you do not need to value all your items.
You will need to make a list of the items for customs so they see what’s in your shipment called a packing list but it does not need to be valued.
You will need to put a value on each box on your insurance application if you need to insure it though.
Feel free to call or email if you would like me to explain further.

It’s just that the Washington, DC French embassy has issued a document that each item must be listed with the value of each item being imported into France when you move to keep from being assessed duty on the move.

Hello Bill, if we are shipping a pallet or U Crate we ship into Europe via UK so its a simpler process and we don’t need this, just a UK Customs form. If you are shipping a shipping container then yes the documentation is more complicated and we can advise.

    Hello,
I have a collection of assorted herbs and spices (mostly herbs used for medicinal teas) that are hard to get locally where we a moving to. I know we are not supposed to pack ‘food’ items but would this be okay to pack in with kitchen items, are they seen as food ?..or do I need to ship them separately? thanks!

    Hello

I won an online auction, and I want to ship the lots I won from USA to my company in Egypt, but the auction organizer refuses to refer their name as shipper/exporter in any documentation.

They asked me to find a freight forwarder to ship the lots and act as exporter / shipper in the USA, but all the shipping forwarders, that I’ve contacted, told me that they can’t be the exporter, since they didn’t sell me these lots.

Could you please recommend me names of shipping forwarders, who can as shipper / exporter?

Note: Some shipping forwarders in the US informed me that:

As the value of the goods is less than $2500, they do not need to complete an export Declaration or any custom formalities so they can actually show my company as the shipper and importer.

However, customs in Egypt won’t accept that…

I believe the best scenario is for the exporter to show herself c/o EuroUSA. Would Egypt customs accept that? Also what is the value of the cargo?

            1. Do you mean by the “exporter” the seller? I must check with the seller first if she accepts.
            2. Sorry, but what / who is EuroUSA?
            3. The value is less than $2500, but we want complete export documentation for our customs.

    Hi.
Sorry but I think this is going to be quite a long query…..
I’m British (born & bred in England), an EU passport holder and for the past 19+ years have been living & working in Hong Kong. I plan to leave HK in the Summer of 2016 and relocate to Bulgaria.

My problem is that the current moving firm (hardly any choice of firms to be able to use for Hong Kong to Bulgaria to be honest!) are now telling me that in order for my personal items/household goods to be shipped to Bulgaria and to comply with the Bulgarian customs, I have to:
the documents required for duty free import of shipment in Bulgaria.

    1. Document proving that client was living abroad (out of EU and Bulgaria) the last 12 months at least – letter from employer, visa, residence permit, prove of paid taxes, prove of payed bills under the client’s name, etc,. The more documents that can provide the better.

    2. Document proving ground for moving to reside in Bulgaria – letter from employer (if client is going to work in Bulgaria – this does not apply to a returning citizen).

    3. Copy of passport – all pages

    4. Copy of Bulgarian residence permit (Bulgarian ID card). Please note that if the client does not have the permit yet for the customs clearance he/ she must pay duties and VAT as a deposit which will be totally refunded to him/ her once he/she obtains the permit.

5 Declaration for permanent stay (must be notarized at a notary office in Bulgaria) – we will provide template. We will need to receive the original of this document.

    6. Power of Attorney letter for customs purposes only (must be notarized at a notary office in Bulgaria) – we will provide template. We will need to receive the original of this document.

    7. Airplane ticket (copy)
In addition, if client is moving to Bulgaria with spouse and/or with children we will need – copy of passport from the spouse, declaration from the spouse as the one in point 5. , Bulgarian residence permit (Bulgarian ID card), marriage certificate. Copies of children passports and birth certificates only in case your children are less than 18 years old (if applicable)

The documents listed are standard what customs request. Please note that the final decision, if the shipment will be granted duty free import, is with custom authorities.

I don’t know of any British national with an EU passport who wanted their goods shipped to Bulgaria who had to physically go to Bulgaria before they actually are emigrating and sign PoA and Declarations, OR had to show their air ticket etc., etc.

Do you know of anyone in a similar situation to me who has tried to ship from HK to Bulgaria and HAS had to do all of the above?

Thank you for ANY light you are able to shed on this for me. Suffice to say I’ve hardly any hair left now as what hasn’t already fallen out with the stress of all of this… I’m pulling out myself! *!*

    Kind regards,
    Roxy-Jo

Posted at 10:02h, 16 November Reply

Hello Roxy-Jo. Thank you for the message. To be honest these customs rules and regs are fairly standard for importing household goods into Europe. Even importing into the USA you need to list your flight number and date. The reason is that you need to be in the Country with the proper paperwork and visas before you import all your household goods. So in your case I suggest you all fly out to Bulgaria and live in temporary accommodation while you get the documentation sorted out and once everything is in place call your shipment forward to be shipped. This may incur storage at the movers warehouse in HK while this is done but will be cheaper and safer in the long run rather than trying to import your things while still getting all the paperwork in Bulgaria in place.
I hope that helps and good luck. I have some partners in HK that might be able to help you if needed. Let me know, cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi, we are moving from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada back to Northern Ireland. we are looking to move household furniture such as beds, sofa and several boxes. do we have to buy a container or will companies supply them? Also will they pick up from our address and then deliver to our address in Northern Ireland. would you have an idea of the cost? Thank You

Hello James, if you are moving beds and sofas etc the best in terms of safety, price and transit times is a self load 20 foot shipping container. We can bring it to your house in Saskatoon, you load it and lock and seal it, we then ship the container over to Belfast, clear it through customs and truck the container to your residence in Belfast for you to unlock the seal and unload everything. I’ll get Pete our sales manager to contact you and give you a price for this. Any other questions let me know, cheers The Moving Doctor

I am moving from Neuss, Germany to Herndon, VA, USA in a couple weeks and need to ship various household goods. This includes small kitchen items, hand tools, some small electronics, clothes, miscellaneous personal effects, and possibly (or maybe not) a bed, but no appliances or other furniture. The possible bed frame and mattress aside, because of the number of boxes (maybe 15-20 – I guess a pallets worth), shipping via the normal postal services or as extra baggage when I fly would add up to quite a cost. I don’t really care if it takes several months even for these items to follow me to Virginia as long as they get there eventually. Can you help on this timeline and let me know what kind of costs would be associated? Thanks!

Hello! We are planning a permanent move to eastern Europe, but although we will be moving out of the U.S., we will have a storage with our personal things until we decide, once there, on a city and country. We will be living out of suitcases for a while until this decision is made, and then will come to the U.S. to send our things. We do not have any appliances or furniture, it is mostly art, carpets (from the middle east), silverware, books and taxidermy heads. What is the rule for duties coming into Czech Republic, Hungary, Turkey or Croatia for what is basically decorative items, all used and for our personal use? Thanks, this will greatly help us pare down the storage.

Posted at 10:36h, 29 October Reply

Hello Martin, it depends whether its a part load or a self load container which route we would take and therefore which customs regulations to advise. Generally Taxidermy heads cause problems and customs inspections and if possible should be left behind in storage. As you need customs regulations for various countries I suggest using the International Association of Movers tool that we are member of. Click here to see all the info. https://www.iamovers.org/ResourcesPublications/ShipperGuides.aspx?navItemNumber=687 Once you can advise from where in USA to Where in Eastern Europe we can give you some rates and options. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doctor.

I have no furniture..but would want to bring back my sewing fabric, cloths, some books, shoes.I don’t have so much , but too much to take on plane. Can I ship these things by cargo on a plan or boat.I am particular about my artwork not getting damaged or wet etc…

Hello Anne, you most certainly can ship these items and I will email you some prices and service options. If you are packing these items yourself I suggest buying some picture boxes from a self storage place or U Haul store and pack the art work in soft cloth if paint so nothing will scratch it and then cover in a few layers of bubble wrap. Then place in the picture boxes.
I hope that helps and we will be emailing you some prices asap, cheers The Moving Doctor

Hi Mark! Thanks for providing this great service. I am getting ready to book our container date (Stephanie has been very helpful). Here’s my question:

How do I match up the Item Numbers on the packing list with my already packed, numbered boxes and spreadsheet of items packed? I have twenty boxes coded “decorative housewares, used”, for example, that contain a mixture of fragile bric-a-brac. (I like dustcatchers, what can I say!)

My spreadsheet lists everything that’s in each box, so do I simply list each box as an “item”? Or do I list each category as an item? For example:

Box A1, containing clocks (batteries removed) and globes, becomes Item 1, category whatever the category is for useless decorative items.
Box A2, containing armillaries and taxidermy butterflies, becomes Item 2, category whatever the category is for useless decorative items. And so on.

    or:

Boxes A1 through A20 (twenty boxes) become Item 1, category whatever the category is for useless decorative items.

Boxes A21 through A32 (which contain used glassware, rugs and curtains) become Items 2 and 3, categories glassware and home textiles.

thanks so much in advance for your help!

Hello Rachel, Customs want to see a basic list of items so they get an idea of what is coming into the Country. It doesn’t need to be very detailed but we do need to present on your behalf a customs form and a packing list that lists the items per box. So it needs to read for example
      Box 1 Books,
      Box 2 bric a brac
      Box 3 decorative items
      Box 4 glassware
      etc etc
If you need to discuss further please give me a call, cheers The Moving Doctor

    Dear Mark,

We need to send 8x Bathroom Vanity Cabinets and 8x Stone Tops thereto and 8x Wall Mounted Medicine Cabinets from a factory just outside Atlanta, Georgia to the West End of London as quickly as possible. We therefore assume that we will have to fly the goods.
We are concerned about the fragile nature of the Vanity Units and breakage to the glass in the medicine cabinets, so clearly the appropriate packaging is essential.

Can you please advise how we go about getting these goods from Atlanta to London all in one piece and as quickly as possible.

Hello Kenneth, the easiest and cheapest way to ship small things like this is through UPS, DHL or FedEx. By normal shipping avenues you would be looking at probably over $1,000 by the time you have paid port fees, customs inspection, customs brokerage, taxes and duties etc. I can get you a quote if you confirm weight and size of the package but try the couriers first is your best bet. Good luck, The Moving Doctor.

Hello Rita, If a box is mainly plates I would list as plates or chinaware, or pots and pans if that’s what’s in it. Glasses and other glassware can go as glassware. I would put the kitchen knives etc in a box with the cutlery and may be just call it cutlery. Any other Misc kitchenware put it as Kitchenware or if it is a very mixed box. I’m trying to move 10-12 plastic storage bins (18gallons) from California to Prague, CZ. The majority of the bins are full of fabric; some with journals/letters/photo albums. Is it better to do a pod or cube? or do the box flat rate?

Hello Jessica, if nothing is breakable I would just go with our baggage service which is a flat rate up to 50 cubic feet and cheaper than the U Cube or pod. We will put your bins on a pallet and shrink wrap them. We then load it in a shipping container with other peoples pallets and cubes and ship over to Europe. Once cleared customs we deliver the pallet to your curbside or driveway in Prague. Hope that’s ok, cheers The Moving Doctor.

I’m looking to move 2 tall, shallow armoires, a drop leaf table and a few small pieces of furniture and few boxes of misc. items from San Francisco to Paris. What would be the best way and does this get my items to my door in Paris, or do I have to find transport from port to door?

    Good morning,

I want to ship a Miele washing machine (100 kg) from Madrid to Ottawa. I’m looking for the least expensive safe way of doing this. It occurred to me that it would be the simplest and cheapest to piggy back on someone who is doing a large move, but don’t know how to tap into this market of sharing shipping containers that happen to be going from Madrid to Ottawa. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 08:49h, 20 July Reply

Hello Guillaume, the problem here is the costs of shipping it, plus the duties and taxes at destination will cost more than its worth. I suggest buying locally in Canada or if this is a special one that is not normally available in Canada see if you can buy direct from the manufacturer and have them ship it. If you can fine someone in Madrid moving to Ottawa with a container that would also be a cheap way but I fear the chances of that are slim….

Hello Vijay, unfortunately there is nothing economical about moving to Hawaii. The shipping lines charge premium prices on this route. We will send you a rate for a door to door self load 20foot container but bear in mind it will probably be cheaper to move to England or Germany and possibly Australia!

Hello Joanne, best way is for you to pack everything well into cardboard boxes. We can then collect from you or if you want to save some money you can drop off at our terminal in Boston. We will then ship them over to Ireland and clear customs and deliver to your residence in Ireland. Its an all inclusive rate to so no extras with UPakWeShip. I will ask Pete in our office to email you the prices and the service options. Cheers The Moving Doctor

    Dear shipping doctor.

Together with my girlfriend I will be travelling around the world for a while.
From Honolulu we would like to send our kitesurf equipment back to the netherlands. There is no rush, so it’s ok if it is done by boat.
    The dimensions are roughly 50 x 50 x 50 cm and weighs 20kg.

Can you give an indication of how much this would cost and how we have to arrange this?

Hi – I am relocating back to the UK from Miami after 4 years here. We have 4 bedroom apartment – probably a 40 foot container load of furniture. What is the most cost effective way of getting it back quickly? We are happy to pack everything but the furniture
    Thanks!

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 10:07h, 28 May Reply

Hi Tim, well your choices are either you save money and we don’t send a packing and loading crew to do it for you and you load and pack everything yourself.
      OR
If we are sending a crew out to pack just the furniture and not the boxes you are not really saving that much as we still are sending a crew out to pack furniture and load.
I will pass this over to our UPakWeShip self pack and load division and also our full service division in UK so you can get quotes from both and decide which one works best for you.
Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doctor.

My smallest are the 7 babies that range in age from 13 months to 10 months and I would need to check the current weight is. I am moving them from my farm in WV to my new farm in Fl. When it is time to move they will have their ear tags in and will be certified by our vet. Since the babies will be under 18 months they will not have have ear tags. How do I go about finding a hauler/s to move my 24 cows and oxen?

Hello Caroline, it really depends how much you want to ship. For example if you are trying to ship one box or a suitcase for example then UPS it a great option. If you have 10 boxes though they will be expensive and our baggage rates will be a lot cheaper.
I will ask Peter in our office to email you some prices and options and hopefully we can come up with a competitive alternative.
