    Good morning Mark,
After several years on the west coast in the US, my wife and myself are about to return to central Europe this spring. We are looking for a reliable mover of a limited amount of household items, hoping for a deal at a favorable price.
We would like to move mostly boxes of books, but have a few awkward items, like our 2 bikes, an office chair and a few other small items, which may need individual handling.
My rough estimate is that we have just about 10 cubic meters which translates to roughly 350 cf, possibly even less .
Would you happen to have some advice for us, with possible options? Allow me the following questions:
    1. Do you offer a “door to door” service between West Los Angeles and the inner city of Basel Switzerland?
    2. And, if so, would your company (and affiliates) be interested and available for pick up during the 4th week of April (best date for us would be Monday, April 22 or Tuesday, April 23)?
    3. Is there a favorable option that includes us packing, since most boxes are already packed.
    4. How long would the shipment take between pick up at 11673 Ohio Ave, 90025 Los Angeles, CA before arriving in Utengasse 41 in CH-4058 Basel, Switzerland?
    5. Would you be dealing with customs though out the journey?
    6. Would there be alternative choices/options (like insurance, fast or slow track delivery, self pick up from local warehouse, etc)?
    7. And, how much would you charge us for your service?

Thank you very much for taking the time of looking into this – and if at all possible responding by email, which would be our preferred means of communication.
    with best regards
    Albrecht Gumlich & Christel Pesme

Hello, sorry for the delay in replying but I just got back from a cold and wet visit to Europe!
      In answer to your questions….
1/ Yes we offer door to door services to Basel
2/ Yes we can arrange any date you like with one weeks notice.
3/ Yes you do all the packing into boxes and then we will collect from your ground floor front door.
4/ I would budget for 7-9 weeks door to door.
5/ Yes we handle all the Customs Clearance for you.
6/ Yes we offer Insurance, you can find our options on our web site under information, I suggest you do the through to door option as thats all inclusive as if you only do the collect at terminal option you will get all sorts of extra charges at the terminal before you can collect your items.
7/ $17.01 per cubic foot door to door is our shared container price but I am emailing you some other options as well.
Hope that helps, cheers Moving Doc

I’ve got some boxes of book, important papers and Christmas ornaments with family in the US but I want to get it shipped back to me in Australia. I would need the goods picked up from their house but I can pick the goods up in Melbourne when they arrive. What would be the most economical way of doing this. It’s about 80kg worth of boxes.

What would be be the taxes at the french custom? Another international shipping company told me they land in england where the taxes are less , then drive the load to france. He this your route as well?

Hello Annie, if you are moving your residence from The USA to France and you have lived outside of Europe for the past 12 months and all your things are over 6 months old then you will not have to pay any duties or taxes. Yes we ship our shared containers to our England office first and then deliver by truck from England to France, Germany, Italy etc. This has nothing to do with less taxes however, more to do with costs and less bureaucracy meaning an easier customs clearance process to be honest. I am emailing you our rates and service options, let me know if you have any questions and apologies for my tardy reply due to traveling. Cheers The Moving Dr

    Hi Mark,
I may soon be moving from Boulder, CO, USA to Winchester, Hampshire, UK. I have several bicycles I need to bring (6 at the minimum and 12 at the maximum). What is the best way to get the bikes over to England?

Hello Ryan, sorry for the delay in replying, I was in England myself last week, Brrrrr !!! and very wet be warned!
You can get bike boxes from any bike shop so I would pop into your local bike store and ask them for some used cardboard bike boxes and pack your bikes in the boxes. You can then drop them off at our terminal in Denver and we could ship everything through to your door in Winchester for $10.91 per cubic foot, minimum $1091.00
I will email you the prices as well, hope this helps, cheers The Moving Doc

    Hello, Mark.
I am moving from California to Italy for six months and need to ship two large computers (iMac 27″), some kitchen stuff (dishes, small appliances), and personal items. The original computer boxes measure 31″x25″x10″ each and each computer + box weighs 20 kg.
What would be the best way to ship these items, and how long will it take? Do you guarantee the time estimates?
And do we need special documents for the computers?
We are leaving April 17 from Los Angeles.
    Thank you for any suggestion.

    HI Mark,

we need to ship our home from Durango/CO to nr. Inverness (!!) end April.

    1) Max 9550 lbs – is that OK for a 20 ft. container?)

    2) What are those costs?

    3) Would it be cheaper to have the local packing company truck it to the port and load it into the container there for us?

    4) What would the most probable ports involved be?

Also left a message on your tel and will call tomorrow – till then

    Thanks

Posted at 21:36h, 27 March Reply

Hello Claudia, yes that sounds like a 20 foot container. We will ship the container door to door and all you have to do is load and unload the container. If you need help I suggest contacting a local mover to help you with the loading, it will be a lot cheaper than us doing it for you!
We would probably ship this out of Houston and ship it into Glasgow.
I have passed this request to Stephanie in our office to work out a quote for you. Sorry for my lateness in replying but I was back in the UK myself last week.

is there an official list of things you are not allowed to ship internationally from usa to australia?
are there prohibited items (apart from untreated wood) for Australia?
we want to use a container to ship our items for our move to australia, but don’t know what we
    can and cannot pack?
can we pack alcohol in our shipping container?

where’s the best place in usa to find someone to ship our stuff?

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 19:46h, 08 March Reply

      Hello Jo
      Good question!
You are allowed to take in everything that is your household or personal items except the following.
Nothing that is dirty so make sure soles of shoes, garden tools, golf clubs, bike tires etc are clean with no dirt on them
      No home made wood products.
Nothing that used to be living like Christmas wreaths, baskets, dried flowers etc
      No food items
      Nothing hazardous.
You can ship alcohol but you will end up paying duties and taxes on this and normaly by the time you have paid the taxes it works out more expensive than if you had bought the stuff locally so its not really worth it.
Plus as a personal choice I dont suggest shipping any liquids in case they leak or break and end up damaging other items in your shipment.
Wheres the best place in USA to find someone to ship your stuff? Right here Jo!!! We can help you from anywhere in America to anywhere in Australia. I will email you some of our service options and prices and dont hesitate to call or email with any more questions. Hope this helps, cheers The Moving Doc

    Hello,

Can you guys give us a quote for moving a 20 foot container (including the hire of the container) from Auckland NZ, (Waiheke Island to be more precise) to Budapest (Hungary)?
We need the container to be delivered to Waiheke Island and then shipped to Europe. We could arrange to pick it up from a continental European port (Germany or the Netherlands) if that saves a lot in shipping cost.

It’s rather urgent… we need to finish packing the container by end of March…

    Kind regards

    Sylvia Banki

    Hello Doctor,

I’m not sure about my cubic space of furniture (mostly flatpack/Ikea stuff). What sort of packaging should I ask for, for a:
    1) Twin bed (can be disassembled)
    2) Futon (Doesn’t disassemble much)
    3) 4 chair table (can be disassembled)
    4) Coffee table (can be disassembled)
    5) A carton of utensils
    6) A suitcase of oddities
    7) Bicycle
    8) Flatscreen TV

Could you also please give me a rough estimation as well?

Thank you and good day to you, doctor.

Hello Ram, everything needs to be in boxes for our shared container service or if not may be you can get everything to fit in one of our U Boxes or U Crates? Where are you moving from and to? Once I get that information I can email you some rates nd service options, thanks The Moving Dr

Hello Michael, thanks for the enquiry, I am going to email you our rates and service options to Hungary. The cheapest way is terminal to terminal but this involves more work for you both ends as you have to drop it off at a terminal in the USA and then when it arrives in Budapest you will have to arrange customs clearance and then pay some handover fees before you can collect it, but if your prepared to do this you will save a lot of money. Chris in our office will send you the terminal to terminal rates and I’ll be sending you the other options. Let me know if you need more information, thanks Mark

Dear Moving Doctor. My parents in law are down sizing a propoerty in Scotland in the UK and have a number of items of furniture that they want to get to us in Utah, USA. This includes a large sideboard, 4 chairs, 2 bed side tables and a grandfather clock. What is the most economical means of having this moved? We are in no rush to recieve the shipment and could probabaly do the packing and unpacking.
    Many thanks

Hello Andy, unfortunately there is no economical way to ship large pieces of furniture and especially from Northern UK to the middle part of the USA I’m afraid. I would think without knowing the exact volume you would be looking at at least $2500 to $3000. This will probably have to travel down to a London depot to be consolidated into a shipping container and then shipped to Los Angeles and then after customs clearance be trucked all the way to Utah. If you would like a more precise estimate please email me move@upakweship.com with a complete list of the items you would like to ship as well as the cities at origin and destination and I will email you back a price. Hope this helps, cheers The Moving Doc

    hey there,

I have the following situation: I will leave USA at around June 10, and that’s when I’ll pack and ship all my stuff to Sweden. However I’ll have an apartment in Sweden only on August 19. Is there a possibility to store my stuff during that period? How much extra would that cost?

Another question: with your UBoxes, do you offer insurance? I have a $2000 computer, and would like to make sure that it still works after shipping.

    Thanks,
    Ross

Hello Ross, yes if the shipment is ready for delivery and your not there yet we can hold / store it for you untill you are ready for it. We normally store things in our main customs bonded warehouse in England before on forwarding to your residence in Sweden. Storage will be about $25 per week.
Yes we offer insurance on the U Boxes. See options by clicking here. The Silver is the most popular and the best value for the coverage.
Anything else you need let us know

Dear Moving Doctor, How could I get a more accurate estimate of door-to-door service from London to NYC? Do you have a more detailed form to itemize what we would like to ship in a shared container? I have a small 1 bedroom apartment, no bed. What is the time frame to scheule something like this? We are looking to ship things within the next month/3 weeks so I am looking for a detailed estimate. Could you please advise? Thank you. Debora

We can normally do most collections within a week and the transit time could be around 6-9 weeks. Look forward to hearing from you, cheers The Moving Doc

Good day, I’m moving to New Zealand from Madison, WI in a little over a year. I’m considering getting a shipping container to put my belongings into. Do you have any advice about the following?

    1. Do most moving companies do containers?
    2. Do companies that do containers usually drop it off at your original house and then bring it to your new house?
    3. What do I need to know about customs? Do I have to pay taxes or duty or anything on what I’m bringing with me.
    4. Are vehicles permissible in the container too?
    5. Is there a weight limit on containers?
    6. Is there anything about shipping things in containers that I need to know? Like pad all delicates or something?

Hello Mathew, thanks for your questions, below are some basic answers but please contact Mark Nash 1 866 868 6386 if you need more information, cheers The Moving Dr.
      1. Do most moving companies do containers? Yes most movers can quote you for a container but not all do self load containers like we do. Most movers want to charge you a few thousand for packing and loading on top!
      2. Do companies that do containers usually drop it off at your original house and then bring it to your new house? Yes they do.
      3. What do I need to know about customs? Do I have to pay taxes or duty or anything on what I’m bringing with me. If you are moving to New Zealand and all your items are used, then there should be no duties or taxes. You can find the customs information on our web site by clicking here.
      4. Are vehicles permissible in the container too? Yes they are but check with NZ customs that your vehicle is allowed to enter NZ
      5. Is there a weight limit on containers? There is but its so high it makes no difference to loading household goods and cars. Thjis would only be significant if you were shipping steel or rock in the container!
      6. Is there anything about shipping things in containers that I need to know? Like pad all delicates or something? Yes you should get as much as you can into cartons and then put movers blankets wrapped and taped around any furniture items. Please click here to see our packing and loading tips.

Hello Nora, if you have some furniture your best bet would be a self load 20 foot container rate door to door. I’ll pass this onto my colleague Chris to get you a door to door price on this, cheers The Moving Doc

How do you protect against my things getting held up in customs. I shipped a small box of old clothes last winter to UK and had to pay 80 pounds to get it.

Posted at 21:10h, 25 February Reply

Hello Scott, I presume you did not use our UPakWeShip through to door service as this service has a price guarentee on it and you will not get charged anything extra the other end unless you have duties and taxes to pay or you had bad access where we couldnt get a large truck anywhere near your residence to arrange delivery. We have our own customs bonded terminal in England so we have control and work very closely with Customs to make sure things go through efficiently. We rarely have any hold ups due to Customs, only wait is normally for a truck heading to your destination.
If you just have one box of old clothes it might be cheaper to have mailed this using the post office?
Any more info needed do let me know, cheers The Moving Dr

    Hi,

I have no idea how to convert the shared container cubic measurements into feet etc. I have an 10 foot x 10 foot storage space that I would like to move to Sydney. What would that be in cubic feet?? And it states everything needs to be in a box – even a couch?? PLease advise. Thank you.

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 21:00h, 25 February Reply

Hello Mikki, to work out cubic feet you have to multiply the length times width times height so in your case if your storage space is 10 foot x 10 foot and presume 8 foot heigh then 10x10x8 = 800 cubic feet. That volume would fit nicely into a 20 foot shipping container. You can see pictures of these container by clicking here Things do not need to be in boxes with a 20 foot container, as long as things like sofas are wrapped in movers blankets and taped up well and marked with your name and piece number that will be fine. Its only on our shared container service that everything needs to be in a box. If you email me move@upakweship.com the origin zip code and the destination in Australia we can send you a door to door 20 foot container shipping quote. Any other information let me know, cheers The Moving Dr

    Dear Moving Doctor,
our family of four will be moving from Laramie, Wyoming to Prague, Czech Republic in April 2013. We are selling our house and cars and will only be taking personal items, no furniture. Could you please provide answers for the following questions? Thank you in advance!

Q1: Some companies we’ve contacted in the past said shipping of “personal items” to the Czech Republic is prohibited. What does it mean? Is it the case with upackweship as well? If so, could we send it to Vienna, Austria instead as an alternative?

Q2: We will be bringing mostly clothes, baby stuff (strollers, bouncers, toys) and house decorating items. These can be put in small to medium sized boxes, like the ones that can be seen on your site (https://www.upackweship.com/pictures.php) and also few larger items such as snowboards, electronic keyboard, fishing poles. The total cubic footage of our load should not exceed 100 Cubic Feet (two UBoxes). Are we able to bring the individual boxes to Denver terminal and assemble the Uboxes there? Would this save us a significant amount of money? If it is not an option, would it be significantly cheaper if you picked up the two Uboxes somewhere in Denver (less then 20 miles from the terminal) instead of in Laramie, Wyoming (app. 150 miles from Denver). Thank you very much for you time and answers, have a great day!

Posted at 18:48h, 20 February Reply

Hello Tomas thanks for the interesting questions.
In answer to your questions about personal items being allowed to be shipped, the answer is absolutely! As long as you are moving to Czech Republic and lived in USA for last 12 months and you declare on the customs form we send you that all your goods are more than 6 months old then they will go through customs with no duties or taxes.

We can send you the U Boxes flat packed to your address in Wyoming via UPS. If you can then find a place in the Denver area that you can load the U Boxes we can then collect them for you and ship through to your door in Czech Republic. The price for a U Box is $1600 for the first U Box and $1025 for the second one.
I hope that helps, let me know if you need anything more, cheers The Moving Doc

Hello Kristina, it looks like you have between 31 and 50 cubic feet. I see you are in MArina Del Ray so our price from our terminal in Garden Grove to your door in Berlin would be $1050 with an optional $125 collection charge from your ground floor front door. This is through to your door. Our price is all inclusive, see here. I dont think you will find a better price for all inclusive through to door! If you have any other questions let me know, cheers The Moving Doc
