Posted at 13:10h, 01 MayMyself and my two sons are moving from Los Angeles to Montreal for a year. I’m driving my small Prius there so I can’t fit too much. What is the safest and least expensive option for sending boxes of all our clothes, paperwork files, small kitchen appliances (blender,2 juicers, stand mixer), dishes, pots & pans, etc? Basically we would like to send everything we use on a daily basis except for our furniture. Also, is it safe to pack and send our 3 desktop computers or do you think I should take that with me in the car?
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:34h, 01 MayHello Cheryl, I think one of our U Boxes might suit for this type of move. I will get Chris in our office to work up a price for you. Your PC’s should be fine in the U Box if wrapped well in bubble wrap or put back in original boxes but if they are really important to you then stick them in the car with you to keep you calm! Save everything on to a mobile HD as well so you don’t loose anything as an added precaution!~

Posted at 22:32h, 30 AprilOnce we book (U Crate) – can you tell us when the ship will be leaving from San Diego to Germany so than we can use our stuff as long as we can?
And will it be a problem for customs if we are not in Germany yet by the time the ship arrives in Germany?
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 14:29h, 01 MayHello Jana, after you load your U Crate at San Diego Terminal we will truck it to our main shipping facility just outside Long Beach Port. It will sit there untill we have enough to fill a 40 ft shipping container. That normally takes about 2 weeks. You can always see the latest info on your shipment by entering your personal booking number into our tracking page on our web site. Click here to view.
Customs say you should be in the Country when your shipment arrives but as long as we have good contact info for you we should be ok as long as you are arriving in the next few weeks after you shipment arrives. Call me if you need more information, Cheers Mark 1 866 868 6386

Posted at 21:23h, 29 AprilI am moving from San Francisco to London. I have a brand new temperpedic mattress I hate to leave behind. And they cost a fortune in England, so replacing it over there is not an option. How much, approximately, would it cost to ship it? I have boxes of books and some kitchen and stereo stuff to ship as well.

Posted at 16:41h, 29 AprilWe are moving from Eugene, Oregon to Santiago, Chile. We are depating whether to ship air freight or Ocean Freight. We think we will have four bikes and 32 boxes. We are trying to figure out a ballpark price quote and what method of shipping would be best.

I am moving from Dubai to Canada and I was wonder if you could answer a few questions. I have been looking for a reliable shipping company and have yet to find one, do you have any that you would recommend? I am also wondering what the approximate price of shipping 5 cubic meters would be?
Thank you

I have a lot of little things that I would like to take back to S.A. Tools of my husband, kitchen stuff, linen and clothing, lots of books , as well as a wooden kist. I think everything should fit into a U Box of 50 cubic feet. What is the dimentions of the box and also is the cost calculated according to the weight or the dimentions? Would it be more cost effective to pick up the crate from Kazerne, Johannesburg or have it delivered to our home?

Posted at 01:27h, 28 AprilHi,
my boyfriend and me are currently living in Canada, but moving back to Europe soon. We are looking to send 3 boxes to Germany (2 with mainly clothes and 1 with our two snowboards) at the end of May. The total weight of all boxes together is no more than 50kg. We have a car, so we can deliver the boxes (we are living in Banff, Alberta at the moment but driving to BC at the end of May). If possible, we want to send the boxes to my parents in Berlin, Germany (either a private address or a business address) as we are going traveling before flying home.
Is this possible with your company? If yes, what are the options and prices?
Thanks a lot in advance,

Posted at 15:31h, 27 AprilHi doc,I’m going to need to ship some furniture back to Scotland from Tampa fl.And think a shared container might be the answer. Is it possible to do half of a 20ft container, and does everything need to be boxed ? It will be beds, bedroom furniture ,sofas and some other bits and bobs
Thanks. John
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 18:39h, 29 AprilHello John, a 20 foot container volume is about the size of a single garage or 1000 cubic feet. So half a container is about 500 cubic feet and half a single garage size. As a shared container service is based on consolidating quite a few shipments together it involves the shipment going though various terminals / warehouses and and on and off trucks so yes everything needs to be well packed and in boxes. If you have furniture then its far safer, quicker, and often as cheap to send a 20 foot container (even if you dont fill it) that you load exclusively rather than sharing a container. Please email me move@upakweship.com and I can work out the 20 ft self load option for you. Cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 09:02h, 26 AprilHi Mark,
This website is a brilliant resource! We are moving back to Toronto, Canada from Blackpool, England in a year from now. We are interested in shipping some items we have acquired: an antique 6 ft church pew, a small antique desk, two guitars in cases, about three large boxes of our daughter’s toys, books, and clothing.
It is a mix of a few things we just desperately don’t want to leave behind, really.
Can I get some advice on how to ship these and your rough estimate of what we should look to budget in for that time? We came 3 years ago with three suitcases and don’t know where to start!
Any advice would be helpful.
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 19:58h, 26 AprilHello Beth, hope you have enjoyed your stay in Blackpool and like the sticky rock! Seeing you have plenty of time may be you could think of getting or building yourself a crate that you could put everything in, once you have wrapped everything in plenty of bubble wrap of course! We could then collect the crate and ship it though to Toronto quite easily for you. I think you will need the crate to protect the antique desk and church pew. One of us will be in touch by email to see if you need any assistance and further advice on pricing and options, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 03:40h, 26 AprilHi Mark,
I am moving from Melbourne, Australia back to the Midwest, USA. We have around 4-5 suitcases that we just cannot bring ourselves to drag across the world back home, so we’re looking at shipping them home as an option. We brought the bare minimum here (from the USA) 2 checked bags, 1 carryon, but found it incredibly difficult to check and uncheck heavy bags several times. Any suggestions on the cheapest way to get our luggage back home to the USA? Thanks so much!!

Posted at 23:31h, 26 AprilHi Mark,
I am so glad to find this web site.
I am in a similar situation as Andrea. I am moving from Ames, IA, the U.S. to Utrecht, the Netherlands, and I have around 4-5 suitcases worth of clothes. Could you please suggest these cheapest way to ship them to the Netherlands? Many thanks.
Li
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 18:46h, 29 AprilHello Li, the cheapest option would be if you dropped these suitcases off at our terminal in De Moines and we will deliver them to your curbside all inclusive for $777.00 I am very confident this is the best price for through to door shipping. You might find cheaper prices to arrival terminal Rotterdam but by the time you pay for customs clearance and port charges you be paying more than $777
Hope this helps, I will emnail you these prices, cheers Mark

Posted at 15:28h, 25 AprilHi there,
I am wanting to move the contents of my small three bedroom house from Cape Town to London – what is the cheapest route? A 20ft container seems very big as I am only taking my favourite pieces of furniture (two king beds, four bedside tables,a dining table and chairs, coffee table, side-board and dresser and a small antique chest) and the rest will be just clothes and boxes of kitchen equipment etc.
It seems that self-loading is also the way to go, but I will need door to door delivery.
Thanks for the help!!!!!!! Its such a daunting move to all the advice I can get the better.
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:26h, 25 AprilHello Mia, self loading a 20 foot container is a smart choice and can save you a lot of money even if you have to hire a local mover just to help you with the loading and unloading. You know what is valuable in your household better than anyone and can therefore pack everything really well that needs it. I think bubble wrap or a bubble wrap and cardboard mix in a roll is best for wrapping furniture. I would wrap everything at least 2 times thick. Moving cloth blanketes can work well too if well taped up.
I will pass on to Chris in our office to contact you in case you need some pricing options, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 13:14h, 25 AprilHello,
I will be moving from Georgia, USA to Glasgow, Scotland. I am in missions, so money is tight. I have moved across oceans three times already and usually sell up and just send boxed personal items. This time, I have gotten rather attached to my furniture and feel very sad at the thought of having to start over AGAIN. Can I move a three bedroom home of furniture for a reasonable price? Or, is it cheaper to sell up and buy new again. :/
Thank you
Ann
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:21h, 25 AprilHello Ann, well it depends what your furniture is worth compared with buying new from Ikea or similar and also how much you have to ship. My advise is either leave all furniture behind and just ship personal stuff or Take everything. In between these extreems gets expensive and you will be paying the most per piece of furniture.
If you are thinking of taking everything, you could pack and load one of our 20 foot shipping containers and we can ship door to door for about $4500.00 depending where you are in GA and in Scotland. We will drop you an email to see if you want us to proceed with a proper 20 foot self load container quote.
Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Doc

Posted at 02:32h, 25 AprilWhere is the terminal in San Diego? We are planning to move from San Diego to Heidelberg- Germany.
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:16h, 25 AprilHello Tanja, good question. You will notice we tell you all the cities we have terminals at but not the addresses. That is because we dont want you turning up un announced without the proper paperwork being completed and the terminal not knowing what is going on! Our fail safe procedure is that we give you the drop off address and the booking number after you have made the online booking with us, signed our contract and completed the customs forms that we need completing. This way we have everything we need from you before you leave the Country!
The San Diego terminal is near the airport though if that helps!
Anything else let me know, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 18:38h, 24 AprilIm moving to Texas USA from Scotland in the next two years and would like to take some of my furniture, could you let me know if this is possible and what it would cost, and do I pay tax on them when they arrive in Texas, if so what amount would this be.
Thank you
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:11h, 25 AprilHello Rena, it depends how much you want to take but I would budget between $3000-$5000 for a door to door move including furniture. If you are moving your residence from UK to USA and all your items are more than 6 months old you would not pay any duties or taxes. Please contact us nearer the time and we can work out a price for you based on what you would like to take, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 13:33h, 24 AprilI have asked for a few quotations for moving two small cabinets filled with family interest papers from London to New York City. The best quotes I have received are about 300pounds, would I get better quotes if i asked a US company? can I trust them to wrap them carefully, and what special insurance should I get
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 16:08h, 25 AprilHello Arthur, i dont think so to be honest. English movers offer very good prices as there is a lot of competition there for a small Country! 300 pounds sound like a good deal though if that is through to door! Yes if price includes packing they should pack it in blankets and then cardboard for the cabinets or put them in a small crate. Cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 18:00h, 22 AprilHi Doctor,
I am planning to ship my antique car to Europe from USA(Las Vegas). Final destination is Hungary. I would drive around for five months and ship it back to Las Vegas.
I have a few questions.
Is it cheaper to ship via container or roll on?
What extra taxes if any I would need to pay in a country receiving my shipment.
I would like to have a door (my home) to door( a hotel service) and can I get an approximate quote?
Will the company handle all my paper work?
Thanks,
George
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 15:08h, 23 AprilHello George, this sounds like an exciting trip! It is cheaper to ship RORO into Germany for you to collect but the RORO service goes out of Houston and not the west coast so that might not be practical for you. Also if you need collection in Vegas and delivery to Hungary thats also going to push the price up. There should not be any taxes and it can be imported as a temporary import using a Carnet but you will probably have to post a bond which will be refundable upon shipping the car back to the USA. Yes we can handle all the paperwork for you. Chris in our office here will be in touch to give you some prices and options, thanks The Moving Dr

Posted at 15:02h, 22 AprilI want to ship an outboard motor to my nephew in Ireland. It’s value is $250, wt. is 48# in a wood box, dimentions are 15 x 15 x 40. Fed-x, Dhl, & USPS all very $. Called a “freight consolidator” in NYC he quoted higher than air carriers? Ideas for long, slow & cheap shipment?
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 15:13h, 23 AprilHmmmm aprt from DHL and UPS may be look at the post office. Freight consolidators including us would have too many minimum charges to be any better than a UPS type service. Other than that there is no cheap way of sending this any cheaper I’m afraid. Unless you happened to be going over there for a visit and take it with you on the plane?
Sorry, The Moving Dr

Posted at 12:02h, 22 AprilHello,
I need to bunch of thing, and was hoping you could help. I’m shipping personal items from us – 10960 to London, UK.
I was originally considering getting two U boxes from you, which would fit all of my stuff, however I have two very long items that wont fit. One is a metal sculpture in a shape of a ladder – it’s 9 feet tall, 14″ by 14″ and another is a screen that folds into 68″ by 20″ by 12″.
What would be the most economical solution for me? Could you please advice?
Thank you.
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 15:53h, 23 AprilHello Mariya, if you can wrap this sculpture and screen in lots of bubble wrap multiple times around it to give good padding and then cover in cardboard and tape up well using duct tape we can ship these items on the shared per cubic foot rate with the U Box price for your other items. Does this sound ok for you? Hope so, Cheers & Happy Packing The Moving Dr

Posted at 05:37h, 22 AprilI think your UBox option will be best for our shipping needs. However, if we decide to take 3 bicycles, I’m not sure what the best shipping option is for them. We need to ship from Corpus Christi, TX to Coventry, UK. We will need door-to-door service. For either option – a) UBox only or b) same items plus 3 bikes – about how long do you estimate the shipping time to take? Thank you very much.
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 21:31h, 23 AprilHello Michelle, I think I spoke to you on the phone and answered these questions but in case anyone else wants to know the answers…….
You can either put the bikes in the U Boxes or pack them seperate in Bike Boxes that you can get from any bike shop. If you do that we will just charge you the per cubic foot shared container rate for the bikes on top of the U Box price. Either way our price is door to door and transit time is about 4-6 weeks. Hope that works ok for you, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 19:33h, 21 AprilHi Mark,
Re: Shipping household goods Georgia, USA to Brisbane, Australia
I am currently drowning in the shark tank of relocation companies and was hoping you could throw me a lifeline:) I’m trying to decide between packing what we can fit into a 20 ft container (basically most of our house) v shipping only the things I do not want to part with. The latter would be some clothes, books, pictures, my daughter’s bedroom furniture, my saddle. As this is a self-funded move, I’m having a really hard time justifying $10,000+ for a full container move, but am also struggling to find a reasonable option for shipping just a few items. Do you, or any of the forum members have any words of experience and wisdom on this?
Thanks in advance
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 21:43h, 23 AprilHello Jayne, we will rescue you, dont panic! 🙂
I think your best options are loading you own 20ft container which will costs around $7,000 or shipping just your personal things in boxes which can costs about $1500. Anything in between like half a container isnt really price friendly and not the most cost effective. I will email you some of our part load shipping options and if you can email us your origin zip code we can work on a self load shipping container. Even if you are worried loading a container, you can probably get a local mover to help you for about $400 for a few hours.
Feel free to call me and we can discuss this further. I’ll be very honest with you and do my best to give you helpful information. Thanks The Moving Dr
I have now sent you an email and while I remember, make sure any horse riding stuff like your saddle is totally clean. We have had saddles get held up in quarentine in Australia before. Make sure you have no horse hair in your shipment otherwise the AQIS people go crazy down there and could charge you a lot for fumigation or possibly destroying the stuff.

Posted at 19:14h, 21 AprilHi Mark,
I live in Germany and have been here for about 9 years. When I first came over, I was only planning on staying 3 months and I have been here since then! I put all of my stuff from the USA in storage 9 years ago and I want to go through it and ship over some of it when I am in the US in May. (I know I will throw out a lot, but I know there are certian things I want to have.) I was thinking of the U Crate, but my stuff is not 50 miles from one of your locations. What can I do? Also, what happens if I dont fill the entire crate?
Thanks for your help,

Posted at 21:30h, 22 AprilHi Susan, the U Box is a cardboard crate so its lighter and only 50 cubic feet so its small enough to be sent out to your residence. We can pick it up with a pallet jack and tail lift truck from your garage and ship it across to Germany for you where we can deliver it with a tail lift truck and pallet jack to your garage / driveway or curbside. The U Crate is larger at 100 cubic feet or 150 cubic feet and is made of wood and is too heavy to be delivered to a house for you to load and unload so we ask you to load it at one of our 88 terminals.
Thats the difference……let us know if you have any other questions, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 21:24h, 22 AprilHi Susan, that sounds like a good idea. I will email you some options and prices. Where abouts are you that you are not within 50 miles of one of our 88 terminals around the USA? We are in pretty much every city in the U.S. If you are between 50-75 miles its normally only an extra $125
You have to load the U crate at the terminal as its big and heavy. The U Box however is a bit smaller and lighter so we can send that to your home for you to load and collect it from you when its all packed up.

Posted at 15:50h, 19 Aprilhi could u email me a price on having a dinning room table shipped from new york to Ireland please
The Moving Doctor
Posted at 17:24h, 19 AprilHello Stephen, I can certainly quote you this but feel if its just a dining room table you will probably need us to pack and crate it so that it gets there in good shape. Theres no point spending all that money and it gets damaged so I will pass this on to our Packing division to quote you, thanks The Moving Doc

Posted at 06:38h, 19 AprilCould you please tell me the best, and required, way to pack my golf clubs. They will be sent in a container with all my other stuff (including a car), so I would like to know if they need special attention. I am moving internationally to Australia.

Posted at 17:28h, 19 AprilHello Mal, suggestions for your prized possesions as follows!
1/ You can get golf club boxes from Fedex that you can use….pack one club in each box
2/ You can buy a golf club carton from self storage shops or U Hual stores
3/ Invest in a hard case for your clubs that will protect your clubs when traveling on vacation or moving overseas.
Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr

Posted at 21:25h, 18 AprilHi Moving Doctor!
I have a box that is about 1ft 181/2 in X 1ft 23in X1ft 23in and weighs between 50 and 60lbs. I need to ship it from SFO to an address in Johannesburg South Africa (in Verwoerdpark Alberton). It is clothes, a teapot, and other small household items that were my ex’s. I was thinking of using 3 of the pre-paid boxes from USPS that run around $70, however is there a cheaper way to ship the stuff? I know overseas shipping is usually cheaper than overground. I am also worried about theft as I know that Johannesburg is not the safest place. Any advice?

Posted at 17:31h, 19 AprilHello Heather, wow the ex only gets a few bits and a tea pot? lol
The cheapest and most secure way would be either UPS/ Fedex or DHL. You could use the Post Office but am not confident they can give you the tracking or proof of delivery that you might require.
I am going to pass this also to Ken, our resident Air Specialist to see if he can offer you a better rate.
Good Luck, The Moving Dr

Posted at 20:47h, 17 AprilHello – my husband and I and our two young kiddies are moving from Scotland to PEI, Canada. We are trying to figure out the best options for the move – we would like to take most of our furniture and clothing and some odds and ends, but we are not taking any appliances, etc. with us. We also have hubbie’s motorcycle that must come with us. We think probably we could get everything in a half of a 20′ container, but it would be pretty tight. Is it possible to book 3/4 of a container, or would we be just as well to get a sole use container?
Our main concern is cost – we are quite flexible with timelines. We would also be able to pack everything and even bring to Glasgow or Edinburgh port if that’s going to save us a lot. We can also make arrangements to collect from Halifax port and transport to PEI ourselves if that saves us some money.
We have tried to get some quotes from other companies but everything seems purposefully vague. Hopefully you could give me a better idea of what costs are involved – insurance, port charges, etc. And maybe ways that I could save as many pennies as possible. :o)
Thank you!

Posted at 20:23h, 18 AprilHello Karyn, we can certainly work on some prices and options for you. Depending how remote you are in Scotland it might be cheaper for you to bring everything to a 20 foot shipping container in Glasgow and we ship it to Halifax, clear customs and then you collect it all again outside of the port and take it all back home with a U Haul truck. Chris in our office will be in touch with you and help you get some prices confirmed and I promise he wont be vague and will watch the costs!
