Looking for a way to ship clothing and other items to Canada. There seems to be talk of being able to do it by flat-rate boxes by USPS for 20-30 dollars, but that seems a bit inexpensive. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Phil. we don’t really do USA to Canada or visa versa as its more of a domestic route by truck even though I know its International. Try getting prices from domestic truckers like ABF, Roadway, R&L Carriers. Cheers The Moving Dr

    Hi,

I’m moving from Milton Keynes (UK) to Iowa City (USA) next year and am trying to estimate whether it would be cheaper to ship everything across, or to put everything in storage and buy afresh in the States. I have the contents of a 2 bed flat (excluding white goods). Any estimates on cost or advice on how to go about the move?

    Thanks!
    Helen

Hello Helen, furniture is fairly cheap in the USA so I wouldn’t bother to ship it. Just ship your personal bits n pieces that will make your place feel like your home. Also I suggest not storing your things in a self store. You will be paying for it every month and probably never ever use anything out of it and eventually pay someone to dump it as you’ll get fed up paying for it every month!
Chris in our office will contact you to give you some prices and options, cheers The Moving Dr

    Hello there –
I am considering shipping furniture (sat in a storage unit) from NYC to London. It’s a dining room table (about 8ft), 6 chairs, an arm chair and 5 large boxes. Is this a really, really expensive thing to do?!
    Thanks!

Hello Sadye, yes this will probably costs you at least $2500 as the furniture needs to be professionally packed and crated to make the journey safely. Its not something you can do yourself. Cheers The Moving Dr

Hello, I try to get some information about the cost of moving approx. 4-6 boxes [cub mtr] from Beaumont, TX to the Netherlands this year. I might add some small furniture, depending on the cost.
Really like to know if it’s possible to rent part of a container [cost?].
Generally how do movers calculate the moving cost, are there some guidelines?

If you are ever getting a terminal to terminal or port to port quote you will always have charges at the destination that you will have to pay before you can collect your things. The charges vary but I would budget on paying about 150 pounds by the time you are finished for 1cbm. You will get a list of charges for hand out, docs fee, terminal charges security fee, post & Petties, and a laundry list of other make up charges that the shipping line agent makes you pay before you can collect your stuff. You will also have to complete a C3 customs form and a packing list and take to customs or pay a broker about 100 pounds to customs clear your shipment for you. If you have the time I would go to customs yourself though. All in all though once you have paid the charges its still a very cheap way of shipping compared to a moving companies quote. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr

Hi there, I need to ship 10 tea chest boxes from San Francisco to London. They are all packed and ready to go. They can go slowly, no hurry for them. What rate would this be approximately? Thanks!

    • The Moving Doctor
Posted at 21:09h, 28 May Reply

Hello Tessa, if they are 5 cubic feet or less and you dropped them off at our SFO terminal, the price would be to ship them to your door in London would be $860 all inclusive plus an optional ground floor front door collection of $125. If however the boxes are bigger than 6 cubic feet then you would have to go into our next size up catagory and that would put the price up to $1091 with an optional collection charge from ground floor front door of $200
Hope that works for you, any questions give me a call or send me an email, cheers The Moving Dr

Google, ABF, Roadway, PODS, SAM, Mayflower. I believe thay all have self load options from Canada. I think your load might be a bit big for one container so you might need 2 containers unless you can find someone like ABF that might offer you a part section of a 50 ft trailer? I would think a 20 foot container would work for you. You dont need to fill it up height wise but you do need to have enough things to cover the floor space (20ft x 8ft) and wedge everything in together so nothing can move front to back or side to side. Cheers The Moving Dr

I have only limited time to clear out the family home in San Diego, and PURCHASE a 20-foot overseas shipping container (with a valid maritime certificate!!!) in which I intend to ship (move) all my books, papers, personal effects, household goods, etc. (mostly packed in apple cartons), (plus a little bit of furniture?, and a bicycle) to Germany, where I will then need to KEEP the container for storage.
The port of San Diego does not handle container ships – everything has to be trucked up to Los Angeles (i.e., the ports of Wilmington, San Pedro, or Long Beach) for shipment overseas, AND I have to wait to have it shipped till I know that I can be present in Germany to receive it and clear customs (at the port? when it arrives, and then arrange for further transport within Germany to its final destination?)
Can you advise me of whom I can best buy a guaranteed seaworthy container from here, at a reasonable price, ASAP, and whom I can then best arrange to have pick it up and ship it to Germany, once I myself am back in Germany, and have found a place there to park it?
(There are many firms here that RENT storage containers on their property, but I may also need to make temporary storage arrangements in the interim for a container which I own, rather than renting, until it can be shipped…)
    Thanks!

For anyone else reading this, shipping Containers have to have a maritime certificate otherwise they wont be allowed on a ship. hi, we are moving to berlin, germany in the middle of july. we are gonna have probably most of the stuff boxed in apple boxes so it will be easy to parallelize. we would do it ourselves to save money… and maybe a couple bigger things like a bike, a round table and a highchair. any recommendations?

Hello Esther, first piece of advice is Do Not Use Apple Boxes! They are not as strong as moving boxes and stand a very good chance of receiving further inspections from Ministry of Agriculture and fisheries and the boxes will probably have insects or insect lava in them which no Country wants coming in. As you have some furniture items I suggest either the U Box or U Crate. I will send you some information on email, cheers The Moving Dr.

I receved an email quote from you and one of the additional services that you offer is the complete moving and packing and unpacking service.

We will not need the unpacking, but how can we generally get a quote for this service?

    Thanks
    Stefanie

I would like to move about 100 cubic feet from Idaho Falls, Idaho, (83404) to Copenhagen. What are the options and prices? Dropping off at a terminal such as Salt Lake City is an option, but we would like delivery to an apartment in Copenhagen.
    Thank you.

Hello George, I would say our U Box or shared container options would be best for you. Both services go through to door in Copenhagen. A U Box door to door is $1326.00 and the shared container service SLC terminal to door is $1410 for up to 100 cubic feet. I’ll email you more info, cheers The Moving Dr

We are moving from Canberra Australia to San Diego California USA and looking to possibly ship a king size bed, large sectional couch and lowline tv cabinet. Any ideas on how much this would cost and how to go about this?

Why are mattresses expensive to ship? Just because of the size?

Look forward to hearing from you

Hello Jen, yes its the size and awkwardness of them! They need to be collected and delivered by 2 men not one, they dont fit on pallets so they have to be man handled and have to be packed into proper matress boxes in order to be able to be moved at all. The only “cheap” way of moving matresses is in a shipping container with your household things in which case you dont need the matress box and a bag will suffice. Dont forget US matresses might be a different size than the country you are moving to and quite often an American King size wont fit in a bedroom overseas! Thats why I normally recomend unless it expensive or has some special memories, or your moving it with the whole of your household in a shipping container, leave it behind, cut your losses and buy new when you get there! Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr

We live in Venezuela and will be moving back to the US in the next few months. I have quite a few books and wondered if there was a better way to ship them back rather than pay the airline for extra suitcases. It doesn’t matter how long it takes.
    Thanks.

Your site did not work correctly. I am trying to find the most economical way to ship personal items to Escazu, Costa Rica. I will be moving there in July.

Hi there. There is a possibility that my family will be moving to Australia in the next couple of months and I am looking into ways to ship some stuff home. I would like to ship some household and kitchen items, clothes, photos and kids toys. Would a couple of U Boxes be the way to go. I would like to consider the door to door service, but live in Pullman, WA which is a considerable distance from Seattle – would this be an option. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Regards Nicky Johnson

My husband and I are selling most of our “stuff” and heading to Europe for a year or 2 of 1 suitcase each travel. How can we store a dozen or so boxes of the precious stuff in central Ohio and get it shipped to us overseas whenever and whenever we eventually land? I hope you can help – he’s driving me crazy…

I suggest finding a family member or friend to store your boxes. If that fails then use a self storage place. Do not use a mover as your then stuck with their price to ship it at a later date whereas if you have it in a self store or a friends place you can choose whomever you want to ship it at a later date. Hope that helps, cheers The Moving Dr

Hello KC, our min amount by ship is going to be $868 for up to 30 cubic feet which is about 5 suitcases. Other options if you just have a box or 2 is try UPS, the post office or try our Air division at 866 944 8303 and see if Ken can help you. Cheers The Moving Dr

I need assistance in determining average costs of moving either a 20′ and/or a 40′ container worth of goods to England from Oakland, CA. Items of interest is nothing more than furniture and decoration type equipment. Also, my biggest concern are importation taxes/VAT/etc to include transit time. Look forward to your recommendation.

Stephanie will be back to you with some prices and service options. If you are moving your normal home from The USa to UK and all your items are more than 6 months old and you have lived in the USA for the last 12 months then your items will be imported duty, tax and VAT free. Hope thats good news! Cheers The Moving Dr
