Moving to The United Arab Emirates? Do Not Do This!

Dubai Marina. UAEAn expat American has been arrested in the United Arab Emirates for comments he posted on Facebook while in the US.

A helicopter mechanic posted on Facebook while on leave in Florida some not so nice remarks about his employer as well as complaining about life in the UAE and using a racial slur against the regions local people.

On returning to Abu Dhabi from his vacation in Florida, he was arrested for breaking the country’s strict cyber-slander laws.

His trial is due to start on 17 March and he could face up to five years in jail and a large fine if found guilty.

The laws were introduced in late 2012 and make it an offence to use the net to mock or deride organisations and individuals.

I would hope most people have the common sense to respect an overseas employer and the country you are working in but this is a clear warning just in case.
