Moving Prisoners Overseas?
I was looking at the BBC news this morning and saw this article about moving prisoners to another country. This is not the re birth of Australia or a new island that we could export prisoners to. (By the way, off the subject line a bit here, but did you know England used to ship convicts to America until 1783 when England lost the war and had to find somewhere else to move them overseas.) Some bright spark then suggested “ship em orf” to Australia!
Norway is planning to export some of its prisoners to jails in The Netherlands to ease the overcrowding. They are renting 300 prison spaces from the Dutch who funnily enough already lease some of their space requirements to Belgium!
It looks like there are still some details to be worked out like visitation rights but all in all it looks like this will all be “locked up and a slammer dunk”” shortly. None of the prisoners relocating to Holland will be a security risk. No Norwegian prisoner will be discharged on Dutch soil.
Norway whose population is around 5 Million has an incarceration rate of 72 in every 100,000 people which is about a 10th of the level here in the United States.
I’m not sure if the prisoners will be getting a relocation allowance but if so this whole prisoner moving business could be a new niche for UPakWeShip.
