Calling Charleston

Charleston Calling

Anyone who has been to Charleston SC will have seen the Ravenel Bridge looming above the church steeples but did you know it’s a popular walking and jogging spot? The Ravenel Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge over the Cooper River in South Carolina, USA, connecting downtown Charleston to Mount Pleasant. All container ships arriving in Charleston have to sail under the bridge before docking at the Wando container terminal and the soon to be open Hugh K Leatherman terminal. The bridge has a main span of 1,546 feet, the third longest among cable-stayed bridges in the Western Hemisphere and a Height of 573′. To walk across the bridge will take you 13,200 feet and the clearance is at least 187 feet depending on the tide below.
One of our UPakWeShip team in Charleston “Kris Baes” was recently taking a walk across the bridge with his family and took these fantastic pictures of the container vessel “Lana” Built in 2010 which carries a total of 4400 TEU’s. Although she looks huge, she’s comparably small compared to the new vessels that can hold a massive 22,000 TEU’s

Kris is from Belgium and moved to the USA last year. He is what’s known in the business as a trailing spouse. As he had a great deal of experience of export shipping in Belgium and relocating to the USA, he was the perfect choice to join and compliment the UPakWeShip USA team. Hopefully when it is time to move back to Belgium he can join UPakWeShip EU.
